Cleopatra Hill was named because it held great riches like the famous Egyptian queen. The hill and the town of Jerome clinging to its side (represented by the large J) are honeycombed with tunnels that once produced 3 million pounds of copper a month before the mines closed in the 1950's.. At that rate, it's amazing there's still anything left above ground. If you are adventurous, you can climb to the top although most people view it from the car as they hang on for dear life on the 15 mph hairpin turns of Main Street (Hwy 89 A).

Jerome sits on the side of the hill and the streets to access are narrow, winding and limited parking. Best to park in lot next to Chamber of commerce and walk the stairs to the various street and shop levels. Truely an artists town.

While in or around the Sedona area, Jerome is a great quick trip. Drive all around to enjoy Cleopatra Hill and the views from the top of the town.

I am always enchanged by the big 'J' on Cleopatra Hill. During this visit, I opened my eyes in the morning, in a room at the Connor Hotel, after having been quite sick, to see Cleopatra Hill and the 'J' through two large windows. It was lovely. As someone else has noted, you can see this 'J' for miles around.

Jerome has maked the mountain with a large "J" for Jerome which you can see from all over town. It's lighted at night but when I was there part of the J was burned out. Very visible during the day though.
