I took my 15 year old son as part of a southwest vacation.
Getting there:
We chose to drive from Kingman Az. Follow Stockton hill rd 35 miles north until it dead ends into Pierce Ferry Rd. Turn Right and go approx. 7 miles to Diamond Bar road. Turn right. Be warned, as of July 2009 Diamond Bar road is a 14 mile long, very rough, dirt & gravel, winding road.
Once you are there:
We made the trip to go on the glass walkway. Upon arrival we discovered that the skywalk can only be visited if combined with another tour package. The cheapest of these was the "Legacy Package" The price was $29.95 per person..... + $8.00 impact charge ea. And don't forget the $3.00 fuel surcharge. But wait there is more... 7% sales tax. Total cost $81.90
Now you can add the glass walkway option for only... you guessed it 29.95 per person. Grand total to go on the Skywalk $150.18 for the two of us.
Our impression:
The skywalk: Neither of us were impressed. If I had it to do over I would skip the skywalk all together.
The positive: We both enjoyed the part of the tour known as Guano point. It has beautiful views and a short hike that even some small kids were able to participate in. It was the saving grace of the trip.
Overall I would recommend it as long as you know the full cost and effort required to get there.

“Nature at its very BEST!!!!!!”
Reviewed July 22, 2009

Wow!!!! The sight of the Grand Canyon is truly amazing here at it's western rim. My boyfriend and I visited while on a short trip to Las Vegas and we had not intended to visit the canyon here. We hired a car from 'Dollar' at the Bellagio and set off for the South Rim after reading many negative reviews of the West. (A good tip for car hire is NOT to get a convertible in July with temps of 44 degrees - we had the top up and air con on full blast for most of the trip!!!!). The Hoover Dam side tracked us with superb views and the interesting visitor center. If you get the chance, take a guided tour. Once over the dam we noted road signs for the Grand Canyon National Park of 220 miles at 65mph. When we saw another advert for Grand Caynon West 50 miles we decided to divert and give ourselves an easier drive. As others have mentioned part of the roadway (14 miles) is unsurfaced but for me this just made this part of the journey feel more of an adventure. When we arrived we did not have to pay to park and there were less than 40 cars. We were prepared for an expensive and 'touristy' experience so we were not surprised at the ticket office. We paid for our entry plus the skywalk with no food at around $160 . We then boarded the bus and visited both stops. The views were outstanding - breath taking - sensational!!!! Although the skywalk was fairly short we were told to take as long as we wanted and spent 15 mins going back and forth. The guys taking photos were very friendly and were knowledgable about the structure and the area - answering my questions well. This was despite us declining the photo. Overall the skywalk is an expensive experience, however i took the view did not travel from Scotland on a once in a lifetime style holiday just to look at it!!!! At the second stop i loved being able to take the short hike to the top of the hill for even greater panoramic views. The Indian exhibits / education on the side lines did not enhance my experience but nor did it detract from it,however some more leaflets or information signs about the canyons formation and statistical facts would have interested me. If i got the chance to return to the area i would probably opt for the south or north rims, only because i have 'done' the west. I would also plan to stay a night or two. If it's your first time viewing of the Grand Canyon while on a short Las Vegas trip - the West Rim is PERFECT!

“Save your time as most people here suggested!”
Reviewed June 26, 2009

It's a real total rip off!!! You have heard about the sky walk, and you wanted to go there for an experience BUT they make the legacy tour a MUST (even if you didn't want to go, you have to pay for it and it's $50 bugs) in order to go to the sky walk! ALSO, in order to walk on the skywalk, you have to pay extra! That's a total scam! No camera? What's the point of going there? I agree that the scenery at south rim and north rim is so good enough that you don't even have to pay this extra money. A little charge for entrance is fine but all these are TOO MUCH! I would go back to grand canyon for more hiking and trails but not this place anymore.

“Tourist Trap”
Reviewed May 22, 2009

Save your time and money and go to the South Rim. This is a total rip off. By the time it's all said and done, you'll waste a full day and about $80.00 per person to walk on the Skywalk. No personal cameras, but they'll sell you a picture of yourself on the skywalk for $30.00. If you want all the photos (6-8), that will set you back $100.00, but you get the thumb drive for free.

The visitor center is about half done and appears to have been in that state for some time. They are raking in the cash, so what's the hurry?

The place is nothing but a money grab and, while beautiful, can't compare to South Rim.

“Awesome - Breathtaking - A Rare Delight”
Reviewed May 20, 2009

My wife, son, our son's Caregiver and I went to Grand Canyon West in late April 2009. We read some of the horrible things people were saying about Grand Canyon West. And while it was a bit pricey (BUT SO IS EVERYTHING IN LAS VEGAS!!!) we were stunned and amazed at its beauty. The Hualapai people ARE making money - but wouldn't you if this were on YOUR land.

We walked the Skywalk and thrilled at the vews down the canyon walls and below our feet. We ate an all you can eat lunch buffet at the Guano Cafe for $13 per person and it was excellent.

While this is not the cheaper, crowded North or South Rim - it offered everything and more. You can walk right up to the rim with no fences or barricades. You can walk anywhere you want to and catch the next bus back to another drop off point.

The 14 mile pounded dirt road wasn't all that bad unless you got behind someone counting the rocks on the shoulder of the road.

We might go back when they get their new runway completed and stay at the casino/hotel they are hoping will move there once the runway is finished. Until then - we have our memories and pictures.
