Owner description: Welcome to Besh Ba Gowah, the heartland of the Salado people. Here visitors will see the partially restored ancient ruin of the Salado people who occupied the site between A.D. 1225 and A.D. 1400. Enjoy the self guided tour of the village which allows visitors to experience the mysteries of those who came before. The adjacent museum provides a fascinating glimpse at prehistoric pottery, stone and woven artifacts excavated from the site and a video interpreting the lifestyle of the people who occupied this region over two centuries before Columbus discovered the 'New World.' A seasonal ethno-botanical garden provides information about and showcases plants used by the people who made this desert landscape their home.

I like the idea of having the ruins open for appreciation but in a way the only thing that bothers me when I go there is the park beside it. Here we have this very beautiful 500+ year-old, historical site and what did the city do? Built a park and swimming pool right beside it. Worth the visit but I can't stand the lack of respect for the site.

We decided to visit here as a stop between Show Low and Phoenix and was pleased that we did. The place is not the easiest to find, although there are signs but it is easy to believe that you may have missed or gone the wrong way. It is not a very large place but was certainly very interesting. There is a short film that you see when you first get there and that explains about the Salado people that lived there and where they came from. They are different people to the Pueblo. The grounds are mainly ruins with signs explaining what you were seeing but they have constructed a two level dwelling and you can climb up ladders to get to the second level. There is also a small garden where they grow different food that the ancient Salado would have grown and you can even grind some corn. There are also a lot of different cacti growing there. This place is ideal for a quick stop but maybe not somewhere that you would drive miles to see. There is also a small museum and gift shop and the staff are very welcoming.
