This is the little restaurant that could. After starting out as a store front shop fifty some years ago La Perla as expanded to occupy the whole block. Enter any door it's all the same. Each room is a little different going from quiet dining to noisy dance hall with mexican mariache bands on weekends. The chimichangas are always a good bet. You are served 3 sauces to go with your chips. The sauces range from mild to not so mild but they are all worth a special trip.

La Perla has been there for a very long time. I used to go there when in high school in the 70's, and the food is still top notch. Hot, homemade chips with delicious salsa (very hot and salsa mix). Food is extremely tasty (my favorite is red chili burro enchilada style). Clean and good service. Has an extra large add-on room with big-screen TV's for football nights. Can't go wrong here if you are picky about your Mexican food.

We had dinner at La Perla as it was conveniently located for us. We were quite happy with what we found in this sprawling restaurant/lounge which has lots of free parking behind it. The menu is extensive and covers all the bases of Mexican dishes. The food was bountiful and tasty with spicing to cater to individual tastes. The chips and salsa to start were very good. The only negative was the rather lacklustre pitcher of Margaritas which was lacking a normal lacing of Tequila. All in all a good place to eat.

After 65 years in business, I can only imagine the reason this "landmark" restaurant still survives is because they have all their infrastructure paid for and maybe even own their building outright. This was our first time and a late lunch trying this restaurant in our search to find the Mexican restaurant that stands out above all others in the greater Phoenix area. But, despite the colorful exterior/interior decor, the food was regrettably just average. Their trio of salsas presented with our tortilla chips was good and our server was attentive, but that would be the extent of our highlights for this establishment. This is yet another restaurant that appears to be coasting on its early successes while not paying attention to details like replacing plastic glassware that is so scratched up it looks dirty, replacing the silverware that is bent, and getting rid of menus that are dirty and torn. To not do so gives this diner the impression you are just milking the consumer for more profits and losing sight of the basics that allowed you to be a success in the first place.

My lunch combination was a beef "tamal", ground beef taco, cheese enchilada with rice and beans...pretty standard fare. The ground beef in the taco was mushy without any flavor, and the enchilada sauce frankly tasted as though it came out of a can rather than being an "authentic" Mexican recipe and being homemade. My partner's food was equally disappointing and she didn't even finish her "Thursday" lunch meal special.

There was nothing special about this place to lure us back. Luckily, there are many other Mexican restaurants to choose from instead.

Great Mexican-restaurant ambiance with a real family feeling. Margaritas watered down a bit, as usual, but they still sneak up on you. Order anything--it's all good.
