Description: Cartwright’s Modern Cuisine honors the spirit of Arizona’s ranching days with rustic yet upscale dining. Located on Saguaro Hill and overlooking Black Mountain and the Sonoran desert foothills, the restaurant’s ambience inside is as captivating as the setting outside. At Cartwright’s Modern Cuisine, a hacienda style dining room, enclosed patio and private wine room boast artistic touches such as straw-packed walls, sandstone and slate accents, woodwork from local mesquite, and a wood-burning fireplace in each room. The interior recalls the original ranch house built by Jackson (Manford) Cartwright in the early 1900s. His father, “Red” Cartwright, was a pioneering cattle rancher in Cave Creek in the late 1800s. The family ranch operated for three generations and more than a century, and is still in use today. Chefs continue this tradition with all-natural meats, including Arizona beef, Colorado range-fed lamb, and North American elk and buffalo slow-cooked over a crackling mesquite wood fire. Also enjoy fresh seafood, house-made bread and desserts, a Wine Spectator Award-winning wine list and fine whiskies, bourbons and Scotches. Cartwright’s is available for private events and off-site catering. Reservations are recommended.

This is our second visit to Cartwright's, we went to celebrate a friend's birthday. Cartwright's has a varied menu of fish, beef, elk, buffalo, chicken, quail and wonderful selection of sides! The foods are cooked to perfection! The atmosphere is fabulous, rustic, just like the old Bonaza Cartwright house. Wait staff is very knowledgeable and attendtative. You will love this place!

Step into an old time Arizona steakhouse. That is Cartwright's here in Cave Creek. We already love their Tonto Bar and Grill so we chose Father's Day for our first visit to their original location. You can have your steak more than any way you want it, you can have it in ways you never thought about as they offer unique sauces, cooking methods and combinations. Every meat is natural...no hormones or other artificial nastiness.
The vegetable are completely organic and extremely well prepared.
They have five (5) fresh-caught fish offerings, each can be cooked in a nearly mind-numbing number of ways.
Steak or Fish, or simple dishes for the soul, they cover the range in an elegant, yet rustic setting with a staff that is among the best we have witnessed in years.
THIS IS A MUST DO EXPERIENCE.

Excellent steak and seafood meals, but very slow service for a group of 11. 4-5 types of seafood filets and all are given a choice of preparation. Examples are Asian, Mediterranean, European and Sonoran spices and sides. Several had the scallops-very high quality and prepared in an excellent manner. 3 steak choices-- a tenderloin, ribeye or strip. Each steak has a choice of starch, sauce and vegetable. This restaurant would have been given a five if not for the slow service between salad, dinner and desert.

I ordered the quail leg which were $13 for two the size smaller than a quarter, a rib eye steak which was very chewy(not tender), but the creme burlea was fabulous!
The service staff was outstanding and could not do more for you. We complained about the 2 quail legs being so small, and the owner offered another appetizer.

Make a reservation. Ask for the smaller, cozy dining room if celebrating a special occasion. Larger, more communal rooms are available. We were timely seated. Share the buffalo sausage appetizer. The amazing elk medallions as an entree were tender and full of flavor. The mac-n-cheese and mushrooms, as sides, were table favorites. Try the halibut served desert style (with some spice) but there are other seasoning choices. This place knows how to do steaks. Service at the bar and table were just what you'd expect--prompt and friendly; invisible when necessary.
