Having stayed here on the recommendation of recent posts, I want to temper their high praise with a “meh.” It’s not that this Comfort Inn was bad, it was just merely adequate.
We opted for a room with a single queen bed, and it was rather cramped. The bed itself seemed small (a princess perhaps?), and the bathroom was so tiny that the door swung past the toilet (not even an elongated bowl) with only half an inch to spare. They were stingy with bath towels (only 2), and the 4 smallish pillows were square and took some getting used to. The security latch was nonfunctional since the post that the latch swings over had been torn off (which was a bit off-putting). Can’t complain about the bed since we slept well – once we shut the bathroom door to block out the distraction of the leaky toilet valve. Wallpaper was peeling in spots and the flat-pile carpet had kind of a grimy feel, but the room was clean otherwise. Each room crams in a mini-fridge, microwave, coffee maker, ironing board, and safe (for which you need to request they drop a charge if you don’t use it). Also on the plus side, the TV worked fine with lots of channels, and the bedside lamps were bright enough to read by (something you don’t always find).
Worth noting, though beyond the motel’s control, was the fact that the smell of manure from adjacent farmland was overpowering outside the building. Maybe this was why there was a strong disinfectant smell in the hallway? (A bit less so in the room, but still far from a neutral aroma.) Whether you’re there when they’ve sprayed the fields is your luck, but the chemical smell inside the building was disconcerting.
The breakfast buffet made up for the so-so accommodations: egg patties, hash browns and sausage; do-it-yourself waffles; plenty of hot and cold cereal options; yogurt & fruit; a decent range of breads and pastries. Being able to save the cost of a restaurant made the room seem less overpriced.
I have to give them credit for trying to uplift an otherwise average facility with upscale touches, from cookies at the front desk to the free toothbrush they provided my wife when she discovered she’d forgotten to pack one. And as others have pointed out, the staff is exceptionally friendly and eager to please; I just couldn’t help but feel they were trying to make up for the overall shabbiness. Not too shabby, mind you, but I wouldn’t want to spend more than one night.
