“unfriendly service”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 17, 2008

The hotel is nice and in excellent location, right in the middle of town. The rooms are ok as well as the food. However, it was the most unfriendly service personnel (restaurant and bar) we experienced in almost 30 years of travelling in the US. For breakfast our waitress would not even consider a "good morning".

My husband and I had our wedding reception at the Winchester Restaurant in the Copper Queen. Although we live in the area, we had many guests flying in from out of state who had never seen Arizona before. We wanted to give them a chance to see what Bisbee was like, and Copper Queen was the perfect venue for it.

From the beginning, the owners were very accommodating. We were able to reserve the restaurant for the reception and a new, plush suite for the wedding night. The restaurant is a beautiful room; it's decorations are not only tasteful but also unique and indicative of the area's mining history. The suite had it's own living room space, a newly refinished bathroom, and a large, comfortable bed. Champagne and chocolate covered strawberries were waiting for us.

Although they had never done a cupcake cake before, the owners were happy to honor my wishes for one. We worked together so they had a general idea of what I wanted, and they did a great job of turning my idea into a great (and delicious!) cake. When my new husband and I walked into the restaurant to see how it was decorated, we were extremely pleased. It was obvious a lot of work went into setting up not only the area where the cupcake cake (which was set up on tiers that looked like steps, an excellent touch) was, but also the area where the cookie tray was. The tables were set up so guests could all mingle easily, and there was even an area for me to throw my boquet.

We had the Italian buffet for the food, and it was very well received. Even our vegetarian guest had a good variety to choose from. Many of my guests came from the Pittsburgh area, where there is lots of ethnic Italian food to choose from, and they commented on how good the meatballs and cheese tortellini were. As mentioned, the cupcakes were delicious. They had alternating chocolate and vanilla cream cheese frosting, with chocolate chips or vanilla chips on the bottom. Even though we didn't originally plan a champagne toast, when one of our guests insisted on it, the owner quickly made sure that there was champagne available for us without a problem.

The Copper Queen gave my new husband and me a great experience on our special day. All of our guests were so impressed with the venue, the food, and the experience. I would highly recommend them for any function, but especially a wedding. As any bride knows, planning can be stressful, but at Copper Queen they will make sure your reception is memorable and elegant. We will always remember ours.

My boyfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Copper Queen. The staff was friendly and professional, our room was charming and clean, and we loved the old-time atmosphere. The 3rd floor balcony was an awesome place to relax and take in the view of Bisbee.

We were hoping to experience some paranormal activity, but unfortunately we didn't. We did enjoy reading the "Ghost Books" in the front lobby, however.

Our only regret was that the cookies weren't available at the front desk the days we were there (Sun/Mon). We will have to try them next time. We will definitely be staying here again!

This is a charming renovated older hotel in downtown Bisbee.
Can walk to Copper Mine Tour (which was worth doing) and downtown. Winchester's Restaurant which is on the property is excellent also.

  • Liked — Charming, could walk to town, had a nice porch that our group could sit on at night
  • Disliked — Nothing really - we were only there for 1 night and everything went well

We are huge fans of the show Ghost Hunters and thought it would be fun to stay at this "haunted hotel".
There were beggers in front of the hotel asking for money when we arrived. (Bisbee is a "hippie town" I know, but this went beyond harmless. My kids were scared.)
We purchased cookies made by the hotel and sold in the front lobby. One of the cookies had a cupcake paper baked in. We threw the rest away.
There is a book that people can write their ghostly experiences in. We were looking forward to reading this, but were disappointed--the book had 6 entries from April 2008. We were unable to look at previous books.
Overall it was not worth the money or the time. Huge disappointment!!

We just had our company retreat in Bisbee and couldn't have been happier with the service, food, and accomodations. Everyone at the Copper Queen treated us like royalty! Adam and his staff really went out of their way to make our retreat a success. We rented out the entire hotel for our event and felt like we were at the Ritz!

Adam even organized a special event with some of the art galleries in town one evening.

We couldn't have asked for more. The food was great, the service was great, the rooms were great, and they even made special arrangements for a large meeting room for us next to the hotel.

I'd recommend any group (we were 80 people) to plan your retreat in Bisbee. We got rave reviews from all of our attendees! They said it was better than Vegas.

On a recent trip to Bisbee, we were so fortunate to have been under the care of the Copper Queen staff. For every expectation I had, they exceeded it and left nothing unattended to. They were friendly, welcoming, helpful and anticipated every need of our entire group! The hotel is as charming as it is beautiful and we're all lucky to have such a neat, historical landmark so close to home (Tucson). The locals were friendly and it's easy to have a good time. Don't miss the unbelivable (and unexpected) art galleries on Main St.!!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Copper Queen Hotel, built in 1898 and completed in 1902, was the product of a booming mining camp called Bisbee. Once the largest city between St. Louis and San Francisco, Bisbee is now a beautiful and quiet getaway. While the town of Bisbee has "grown" it has not lost its' charm. Soon after Bisbee became a town, Phelps Dodge Mining Company built the Copper Queen Hotel as a place for dignitaries and investors to relax in luxury. Construction was difficult because Phelps Dodge had to blast away and clear a large portion of the mountainside in order for building to begin. Although the most modern and up to date materials were used, it did not lessen the difficulty of each task. In order for concrete to be mixed, water had to be pumped up the hill from the mercantile, what is now called Copper Queen Plaza, on Main Street. The walls were constructed to be nearly 2 feet thick, which helps keep the hotel cool during the summer months. Once the Hotel was completed, anyone who walked through the doors would notice the mosaic tile from Italy. Since the Hotel was built in an Italian style, the tile was installed throughout the entire first floor lobby. The remaining tile can be seen in the Hotel entrance. As the story goes, the cathedral ceiling in the Palm Room was all fitted with Tiffany glass. Nobody knows when it came down or what happened to it. There was an open air hallway behind two large windows along the southeast wall that acted as air conditioning for that era. The front desk was fabricated out of Tiger Oak and was surrounded with a wrought iron security cage. The unique safe behind the desk was once used at the Copper Mine until it became too small for the company payroll, which was all paid in cash. It was then passed down to the Copper Queen Hotel. Phelps Dodge cleverly paid their employees in cash, to have their money quickly returned to them in goods and drinks. The Copper Queen Hotel was one of the most modern hotels in the West during that time. One can only imagine what changes the Hotel has gone through to accommodate the modern day traveler. Located roughly 100 miles southeast of Tucson and at an elevation of 5,300 feet, the Hotel is usually 10 to 20 degrees cooler than in Tucson or Phoenix. In the winter, we are even blessed with an occasional snowfall. Bisbee is the southern most mile high city in the U.S. And is eight miles from the border of Mexico. Although the Copper Queen Hotel has maintained the ambiance of the Victorian Era Old West, it has been renovated with modern day conveniences to make your stay more comfortable. ... more   less
