We decided to go through this tunnel while touring Anchorage because where else do you share a one lane tunnel with trains? Very happy we did! But, be sure to allow enough time since it is one lane and not only do you have to share it with trains, but you have to share it with the cars leaving Whittier. On that note, Whittier is so beautiful! A great location! I don't remember if we had to pay to go through the tunnel, but if we did it was minimal.

We went through this tunnel 6 times in the 3 weeks in Alaska.. twice in a motorhome, and a rental car.. It takes several minutes and is super dark.. They shut the lanes of traffic down when the train comes in & out.. It is only 1 lane wide!!! They carved it out of a mountain.. Whittier gets 352 inches of rainfall a year.. It is quite tropical misty..
We learned a lot about the town, people, environment.. We really liked Whitter & it is somewhere to see when you come to Alaska. This tunnel is the only way in & out of the town & closed down by 10ish pm We camped with our motorhome, had food, & been to the coffee shops.. Really makes you feel 1,000,000 miles away.. not far from Girdwood or Anchorage

It is an amazing experience to go thru this tunnel. You share it with the trains so each 1/2 hour the direction changes. Sweet town of Whittier and Prince William Sound at the end. Whittier is a great place to be-in Alaska

Came though the tunnel on the train, had been told the history and how it all works, being used by cars & trains. Works well for the small fishing village of Whittier and the cruise ships that call. I think it is 2.7 miles long, we sat in the viewing area of the train when we came through, good fun.

This is the only way to get to Whittier. $12 for a car - $20 for a RV. 2.5 mile drive over to Whittier. We went to get on a cruise to Prince William Sound. There is nothing to do at Whittier so make a day of it and go for a cruise!
