We recently did the Blackstone Bay kayak trip and it was worth every penny. The company and our guide were professional, experienced and enthusiastic. The equipment was very nice quality and the lunch they served mid-day was more than sufficient. This trip was customer-oriented and we felt they were dedicated to making sure we had a fun and safe experience. The scenery was spectacular. If you are looking for an active day trip with a wow factor, this is it.
We spent the day sea kayaking in Blackstone Bay , this and halibut fishing were the highlights of our trip and we would do both again in a heart beat. DO NOT let the price of this trip scare you off it is worth every penny and then some. My husband at first didn’t want to do this for 2 reason the price and he can not swim but once we started kayaking he was having a time of his life. The day we had was unusually warm and it didn’t rain, if it would have rained we would have stayed dry with the gear Pete and his team provided us. Before leaving the office Pete and his team made sure we all had the correct gear and it fit us correctly. There was Victoria our guide and one other couple with us and no one else to spoil natures beautiful scenery. We paddled within a ¼ of a mile of 2 glaciers and they happen to be calving, it was the coolest sound to hear the ice hitting the water without sharing it with a hundred people on one of those boat tours. We past one of the largest waterfalls I have ever saw it’s nothing you can image, I love waterfalls and have seen many, but this one will stay with me the rest of my life. Alaska Sea kayak provided a lunch that was outstanding and there was enough food to feed 10 or so people (remember I said early there was only 5 total in the group). Do not worry if you are not in great shape this is very easy paddling and by the time you’re done you can’t believe you just paddled 10 miles or so. We had time at the end to walk up close and touch a glacier while we were waiting for the boat to come and pick us up. If you have the time this is a must do for a day trip, you will not regret it I promise, we spent 15 days in Alaska and it was nice to go on a day trip that wasn’t packed with tourist.
Our family, with 3 kids ranging in age from 9 -12 (who have some paddling experience) signed up for the Blackstone Bay paddle. Pete and team at Alaska Sea Kayakers were incredible. Pete connected with us multiple times before the adventure, with weather updates.
Details. You wear layers, and a cap (to keep the rain off your face). They provide rain bibs, rain coat, rain boots, spray skirt, life vest, and had us in very stable, large, sea kayaks.
For Blackstone bay day trip, they charter a boat that carries kayaks, and take you to Blackstone Bay. The guides (of which they put three with our family for a private tour) were incredible. If you have kids, request Victoria!
You paddle to a glacier/waterfall, then on more glaciers. There was ice in the water that had recently calved, and the occasional head of a seal. (William was good at spotting and pointing out to the kids).
It was the care of the owner Pete, the safety, the great guides, the sweet, thoughtful touches (like the very kid friendly lunch that they provided), this is a fabulous company.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
The owner of Alaska Sea Kayak and our guide were very friendly. After a boat tour of approx. 30 minutes which took us to the departure point in Blackstone Bay, we got a brief introduction on kayaking. We then started to paddle towards the first glacier. The landscape was amazing and we were lucky with the sunny weather. We had lunch on a little creek (everything was organized by our guide). In the afternoon we paddle again to see the other glaciers. We ended the day with a small hike to touch one of the glacier while waiting for the taxi boat. Highly recommended!
Trip was initially cancelled due to bad weather so we went for a walk around Whittier. Weather settled, and Peter came driving looking for us!. Kayaked up the inlet and saw a humpback whale surfacing near us
My boyfriend and I were in Anchorage visiting some family and wanted to get a sea kayaking trip in and found Alaska Sea Kayakers online. Peter did a great job letting me know how the whole process worked for reserving a time to go on their short three hour float and let us know ahead of time what times were available since we had a flexible schedule.
Once we arrived at their location that took care of all of our gear and getting up ready to roll with our guide, Jonathan. Jonathan did a great job throughout the trip getting to know each of us (there were four of us total) and keeping us safe as we floated along. Half way we were able to beach the tandem kayaks and stretch our legs which also allowed my boyfriend and me to switch spots in the kayak.
As we made our way back to the harbor we have super calm waters and had a wonderful time overall and couldn't have asked for a better first time sea kayaking!
