The owner of Alaska Sea Kayak and our guide were very friendly. After a boat tour of approx. 30 minutes which took us to the departure point in Blackstone Bay, we got a brief introduction on kayaking. We then started to paddle towards the first glacier. The landscape was amazing and we were lucky with the sunny weather. We had lunch on a little creek (everything was organized by our guide). In the afternoon we paddle again to see the other glaciers. We ended the day with a small hike to touch one of the glacier while waiting for the taxi boat. Highly recommended!
Trip was initially cancelled due to bad weather so we went for a walk around Whittier. Weather settled, and Peter came driving looking for us!. Kayaked up the inlet and saw a humpback whale surfacing near us
My boyfriend and I were in Anchorage visiting some family and wanted to get a sea kayaking trip in and found Alaska Sea Kayakers online. Peter did a great job letting me know how the whole process worked for reserving a time to go on their short three hour float and let us know ahead of time what times were available since we had a flexible schedule.
Once we arrived at their location that took care of all of our gear and getting up ready to roll with our guide, Jonathan. Jonathan did a great job throughout the trip getting to know each of us (there were four of us total) and keeping us safe as we floated along. Half way we were able to beach the tandem kayaks and stretch our legs which also allowed my boyfriend and me to switch spots in the kayak.
As we made our way back to the harbor we have super calm waters and had a wonderful time overall and couldn't have asked for a better first time sea kayaking!
The highlight of my Alaska trip! Saw a glacier calving, seals and otters up close, hiked on a glacier! The provided picnic lunch was incredible! Derek our guide was fantastic! I'd do it again in a heartbeat!
We did the full day blackstone bay trip. We kayaked through icebergs to within less than a mile of the huge Blackstone Bay Glacier. We saw multiple massive chunks of ice falling off and hitting the water like thunder (calving). Although it rained most of the day, the wet gear provided kept us dry. Our guide Brice was very informative and worked with everyone on paddling technique.
Lunch was fully catered with everything from salmon and cold cuts to veggie burgers and hot chocolate. Peter, the owner, was even kind enough to walk our dog mid day (their place is right next to the Inn at Whittier). He probably doesn't do this on a regular basis, but Peter and his team really go out of there way to make sure the trip is perfect.
The paddle back wasn't hard at all, we even had extra time to go climbing on Lawerence glacier. This trip was the top highlight of our Alaska vacation. There is no better way to experience an Alaskan Glacier than with a kayak.
Our family of five, two out of shape parents and three teenage boys, took the full-day Blackstone Bay trip in early June 2014 and cannot recommend it highly enough. Every one of us rated it far and away the highlight of our two-week visit to Alaska. Pete runs a wonderfully friendly and welcoming, but highly professional enterprise. Every aspect was well-prepared and executed, from the highly-trained staff to the safety demonstration, gear preparation, boat excursion, and the outstanding picnic lunch on a beach. We always felt safe and in capable hands, and because of that we could relax and enjoy the wonder of our surroundings. I kayaked with my especially hard-to-impress 13 yr. old, who repeatedly said things like, “OK, this is pretty amazing.” Calving glaciers, waterfalls, astonishingly large roosts of birds on cliffs, touching ancient glacier ice in the water and on the beach, otters, nearly total seclusion, clean and crisp air and water. No shortage of wonders. Made our trip!
