“Personable captain on a nice boat”

Captain Fred has years of experience and shares his knowledge and interesting stories throughout the trip. The sound system throughout the boat is excellent, so you're not straining to hear him. He gets within a quarter mile of the impressive Columbia glacier and patiently waits there awhile for good iceberg calving opportunities. We didn't end up seeing any whales that day, but the captain took his time to search for them and didn't rush the tour like some boats on a tight schedule. We probably had 30 people on our cruise--a small & comfortable number. The friendly staff took each family/couple/group's picture in front of the glacier using our own cameras, at no extra charge. The water in Prince William Sound was calm, presenting no problems of sea sickness. Also nice is that this is a non-smoking cruise. We liked our Major Marine cruise last year in Seward, AK (6 hr to Holgate Glacier), but this one was even better with the comfortable, smaller boat and personality of the captain! What my 8 yo & 14 yo daughters liked best was getting to steer the boat!

We almost booked the competing cruise to the Columbia glacier but fortunately ran into "Tosh" one of the mates on the LuLuBelle who convinced us that we should go out with captain Fred and his ship. What a great decision!
The LuLuBelle is a beautiful mid sized yacht with gorgeous wood interior, plenty of inside space and wonderful outside decks. Captain Fred personally helped design and build the ship which has been taking visitors to the Columbia glacier since 1980.
The trip includes multiple activities including watching commercial salmon fishing, whales, dolphins, otters, puffins, sea lions, and any other marine life sighted. The highlight, however is slowly working your way thru the icebergs into the area of the massive Columbia glacier. Once there you can spend over an hour waiting and watching for the common "calving" from the face of the glacier. Thanks to The captain's patience and ability to note minute changes in the face of the glacier we were treated to a massive spectacle. I think we were about 1/4 mile from the glacier for over an hour.
In retrospect the competition did not even come close as they keep their ship some 2 miles from the face and seemed to be in the area for much less time overall.

This was a treasure of a trip. The boat was small and clean, the captain had amazing knowledge. Our family of 6 (parents and adult children) enjoyed the full day. We saw many of the wild animals suggested (the whales were not cooperative at this time), but all others. Fabulous view of the glacier, it's an advantage to go on the smaller boat to get closer into the caves and the glacier which he does. The captain talks a huge amount so it's up to you whether you like that or not. It does limit the amount of conversation you have with other people, but he gives great history and stories of the area. Absolutely worth the price, we suggest you take food. Many munchie type things - fruit, crackers, sandwiches etc. There is food on the boat that is good, but a full adventure day needs snacks. The town of Valdez was much less exciting than we had thought. It was beautiful and worth the trip but don't plan on shopping. I was surprised at the limited stores with souvenirs - particularly Alaskan art. We stayed at the RV park renting an RV there.

Wow! This cruise was awesome and the highlight of our trip to Alaska. Captain Fred was a bit of a motor mouth, but that is a part of what made the cruise interesting and informative. We were blessed with good weather and enjoyed some of the greatest scenery on earth. If the captain saw something interesting he stopped, even turned around. We saw sea lions, otters, puffins, eagles, whales, a fishing rig at work, and gorgeous views at every turn. We got SO close to the glacier, about within a quarter of a mile. I don't think the other cruises in Valdez get this close. Captain Fred seems to have a sense of when the glacier will calve and didn't turn right around and leave. Sure enough, we witnessed a major glacier calving. I highly recommend this tour. You won't be sorry you selected the Lu Lu Belle. The tour took an extra hour but it was well worth the extra time. Oh, and the chili bowl was great also.

We have been on a competitors cruise a couple times in the past which we really enjoyed also, but Captain Fred and his wife Megan stepped it up a notch. First, our first encounter with Lulu Belle Tours is when we went in to inquire about the tour, Megan was absolutely a delight and very patient and helpful with our questions. Weather was not that great that day or the next, but thought that Monday weather looked good. She did not pressure to "buy now" but in fact, suggested that we wait until Monday morning to see what weather was. Monday's weather was spectacular, we went, Captain Fred an absolute wealth of knowledge, took his time to watch whales, sea lions, puffins and get really close to glacier,(about 600-700 ft) today. Totally, we were gone over 8 hours. An absolute must if you come to Valdez. Darrel and Jan Alberts of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin
