“What a wonderful experience!!!”
Reviewed August 8, 2013

Our trip on the Lu Lu Belle was one of the highlights of our visit to Alaska. What a WONDERFUL experience we had. We did not feel like patrons on a tour, we were treated like guests on Captain Fred's wonderful & beautiful boat; Lu Lu Belle! As stated in his literature, make sure you don't make any plans for later in the day because if there are things out there to see, he will stay out there so everyone has a chance to see them. (Our cruise lasted 9 hours). We saw Humpback whales, sea otters, puttins, harbor seals, sea lions, cruised along with some playful dolphins for a bit, and saw the Colombia Glacier up close and personal! We witnessed spectacular calving of that glacier and it was amazing. If you're visiting Valdez, the Lu Lu Belle should definitely be on your list of MUST DO'S! Don't miss out, I promise you won't regret it! :)

“Wonderful Experience”
Reviewed August 7, 2013

We went on the Lu Lu Belle on a glorious warm and sunny July day and had a wonderful experience. We saw a host of wildlife as well as getting within 1/4 mile of the huge Columbia Glacier. What an experience!

The boat is beautiful with a lot of polished wood and Persian carpets. There is a booth style seating area as well as space where you sit on cushions around the perimeter of the room. The bow, stern, and top deck are also available though the stern is rather noisy. There is a wonderful seat above the wheel house where you can see 360 degrees, if you can take the wind and chill.

Captain Fred has been doing this for many years so he knows the area very well and knows where you are likely to see wildlife. If whales are spotted he will go towards them while maintaining a respectful distance. He also stopped near a fishing boat for a while to allow us the chance to see how they brought in their nets. He even took us to a sea lion colony even though he doesn't like sea lions--they eat the salmon you know. The one down side was the almost incessant commentary by Captain Fred. While it was generally informative it was too much. After nearly seven hours of it I was ready for a break.

The staff made brownies for sale early on. Later they offered a hot lunch, but there was no vegetarian option available. Drinks (hot and cold) are also available.

Even though it was a beautiful day it was quite chilly on the water. The water temperature is in the 30s and with the sea breeze and the speed of the boat it felt quite chilly even cold. By the Columbia Glacier the winds coming off the glacier are near freezing and then with a wind that too can be quite chilly. Come prepared with warm layers. You can stay inside the whole time where it is nice and warm, but then you will miss the whales, the Orca's, otters, seals, sea lions, birds, and the scenic beauty.

Captain Fred takes you out and wants you to see what there is to see. He is not bound tightly to a clock or schedule. We left at 10:00 am and got back close to 6:00 pm. It is a great cruise. Just be warned about the ongoing commentary from the bridge. You can ignore it if you wish, but it is always there in the background.

“A grande finale to our Alaskan trip”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

The LuLuBelle was highly recommended by our cottage owner and several local businesses. But we had already made plan to take a cruise on it.

It was our 2nd time on the LuLuBelle to Columbia Glacier and Wildlife watching and it was even more spectacular than the first. A 5 hour tour turned out to be 7 1/2 hours because Captain Fred allowed us plenty of time to take our fill of the wildlife and glacier.

I like the intimate atmosphere of this cruise and the boat is immaculate and beautifully kept. Love it, love it. I'll take this cruise again if we ever go back to Alaska.

“What A Great Time”
Reviewed June 30, 2013

My wife and I took the Lu Lu Belle cruise on June 18, 2013. It could not have been better. Captain Fred is a delight, and his Lu Lu Belle is a thing of beauty. We were two of 17 people on this cruise, and though I'm sure the Captain would like to have more, we felt as if we almost had the boat to ourselves. We saw sea otters, orca whales, humpback whales, harbor seals, sea lions, and I don't know how many different kinds of birds. The great thing is that Captain Fred doesn't keep a rigid schedule. When we came upon the Orcas he idled the ship for a long time in order to give us ample opportunity to see them breach the surface. The same when we encountered the humbacks. He took us to a quarter-mile of the Columbia Glacier where we sat for a long time as the glacier "calved" repeatedly (no huge ones unfortunately).

We had planned to take a day cruise out of Seward later in our visit, but the Lu Lu Belle experience was so complete and gratifying we cancelled the Seward trip and saved ourselves over $400. The cruise we cancelled was nearly twice the cost of Lu Lu Belle, and I cannot imagine it being any better, or even as good. Lu Lu Belle returned more value for money spent than almost any such attraction I can think of.

If you are going to Valdez be sure to treat yourself to the Lu Lu Belle. You won't be sorry.
