We did a guided kayak tour on the Valdez glacial lake with Anadyr with our 2 sons. It was great. Friendly, knowledgeable guide, good gear.

We were undecided about whether to go for the Stan Stephens cruise to Columbia Glacier about which we had heard good things or try something like kayaking that sounded more exciting. We decided to go with the latter and contacted Anadyr. We were a group of 8, and they were nice enough to give us a discount as well. The whole experience was handled very professionally. They provide all the rain gear, boots, life vests and pogies (gloves) to keep you dry. A special word for our guide, Eileen who was awesome - very friendly and helpful! Make sure you pack non messy sandwiches / lunch for the trip and carry some extra plastic bags in order to trash the remains easily. The trash needs to be carried back from the glacier to land. The columbia glacier is about a 90 minute motor boat ride from the Valdez harbor which sounds long but the views all around us were captivating. The marine life that we spotted was disappointing since we expected more but we did get to spot a couple of otters, sea lions and a glimpse of dolphins. As we got closer to the glacier, the floating icebergs gave the place a surreal feel...and its fun and exciting to finally kayak through these icebergs! For those who havent kayaked before, it can be a bit strenuous but worth the workout that you get. Persons taller than 6ft in height might have difficulty sitting comfortably in the canoes so check that before you take the trip. One of my friends who is 6'2 was extremely uncomfortable and did not enjoy the experience. For the rest of us, it was tiring but a very unique experience. Thanks Anadyr!

An excellent trip for 4 oldies. We did a 7 day kayak trip with an expert guide, Liz, starting close to the Meares glacier. We even got to walk the last 400 yards to the glacial head. 50% sun and 50% rain and cloud seems the norm for Alaska. Food was wonderfully prepared by guv'nor Liz and she worked hard serving 3 cooked meals per day. Lots of fresh fish to eat but we couldn't catch any ourselves. Kayaks are roomy, comfortable and dry under the sprayskirts, but watch out-- they are heavy. When rainy or buggy we had a screen tent and heavy duty tarpaulin. Loads to see, ie whales, sealions and sea otters plus of course the eagles. For me, this was the highlight of our trip to Alaska.

It seems that the main thing that possibly sets apart the two kayaking companies (Pangaea and Anadyr) from one another are the people that work there. I cannot speak for Pangaea's staff, but Anadyr's staff seemed terrific. My girlfriend and I booked the day before (June 9th) and Anadyr were more than happy to fit us in when Pangaea could not. They provided us with everything we needed and more. All of the tour guides seemed great, we were fortunate enough to get Adrianne (pronounced Awe-drianne). She was extremely knowledgeable and did her very best to suit her group even though the weather was sub-par. Although the website does state that lunch is not provided, she had plenty of snacks to share and even warm drinks in a thermos for everyone as well. This doesn't mean to not bother making a lunch of course! Adrianne also had warm clothes stowed away for those who did not prepare as well as they should have (including us). We saw a good amount of wildlife (no whales this time), but could not get too close to the actual glacier due to the weather causing too much ice to pass further. This, of course, did not stop Adrianne from trying her best to carve a path out of the ice to travel as close as possible. The weather we had was very unlucky, though, and should not happen to most who do this. I recommend this trip because it was very fun even with the poor weather, and it was entirely thanks to Adrianne and the rest of the staff.
