“Lovely Property”

This was the third stop on the land portion of our cruise. The lodge is located about an hour away from Talkeetna and the train station. Our bus driver explained on our way to the lodge that the whole place is off the grid. There are generators running everything. They certainly must be better than what we run at home during power failures because everything ran very smoothly. Just like the Princess Lodge in Denali, the rooms are located in separate buildings away from the main lodge. The rooms are comfortable, neat, and clean. I liked that the fixtures in the room (lamps, dressers, etc.) also featured wildlife scenes. There are two main restaurants, and we ate at the one with the more reasonable prices. We found all of the staff helpful and happy to answer any and all questions. We were at the lodge the week before it closed so if the staff was going to be 'goofing-off' now would be the time, but that's not what we found. There is a gift shop at the lodge, but if you want to do more shopping, take the lodge bus ($5 roundtrip) to Talkeetna, a quaint town filled with gift shops and some wonderful restaurants. Talkeetna is the town that the TV show Northern Exposure was based upon. Again, we found the locals friendly and happy to chat with us. Don't miss the historical society or the forest ranger station. There is a lot of lore about Mt. McKinley/Denali in the area, because this is the town where people leave from when they climb the mountain. My husband and I have traveled extensively for the past forty years and have realised from the beginning that it is your attitude that you bring with you that determines what kind of a time you have.

We asked for a room with a queen or king sized bed and although we had a king sized bed, there was also a bunk bed in our room. No fridge or safe and the shower head sprayed water all over the place and could not be adjusted. Outstanding place to view Mt. McKinley and the property is well maintained.

Pretty location, clean rooms, younger staff couldn't be more obvious in their desire to move on to their next seasonal job. Ranger girl wouldn't help us with our questions on a bus tour. After finally asking her "would it be wise to verify if they are still running" (long wasted discussion" she gave us a number and asked us to use courtesy phone. After calling, I learned it was the front-desk, which was 50 feet from her desk. The person who answered laughed in a sarcastic tone after realizing what the ranger did, told me to speak with the tour desk. Walked to tour desk and met a young guy (Kirk Owens) with mustache who looked like he hated his life. He wasn't helpful in the slightest and wouldn't help me in figuring out the name of the bus tour that wasn't the "Natural History" tour (all I could remember). Pretty rude actually. In fact, he said all bus tours in Denali were canceled because of the snow. I learned later that wasn't true. Went to dinner at 20320 and got the same. Next morning ate breakfast at 20320 and our waiter didn't bring us what we ordered. After telling him, (Kevin) quickly said "Kitchen ran out, is there anything else I can help you with" to shut us up. Didn't let us know, offer something else, or care to see if we were ok with it.

All-in-all, if you go at the end of the season, be prepared to feel the negative, angry attitudes from the young staff. They want nothing to do with you and are only looking forward to leaving ASAP! Food was so so, but that was expected after realizing the energy in the place. Princess Cruise Lines is probably unaware of this as their service on the cruise was excellent.

the views say it all......once in a life time. Even on a bad day it was beautifull. The lodge was big and roomy and a great place to relax. The hotel rooms were 0k and we were lucky because our room was close to the main lodge. The food in the resturant was good and the staff were very helpfull.

The one and only thing this resort has going for it is its "viewing location" of Mt. McKinley. The setting is beautiful amdist the mountains and IF it is not rainy, foggy, or cloudy, there is a great view of Mt. McKinley. The huge problem for this resort is that it IS rainy or cloudy more than 60% of the time, there is NOTHING else to do at this resort, and it is an hour from town, where all of the excursions are located. Princess built a nice main lodge and then built a multitude of mini motels in the area around it - some a VERY far distance from the lodge - housing mediocre (at best) hotel rooms (sparsely furnished, old-fashioned TVs, no amenities in any of the buildings, etc.). Being that this resort is so far from any excursions or activities, it is incomprehensible that Princess has NO recreational facilities or activities at this lodge. There are a couple of SMALL hot tubs in one of the outer buildings (not easy to get to from most of the hotel rooms). There is no fitness facility and very few organized activities. There are several documentary movies shown in the main lodge (of Denali Park and the Aurora lights), but even they are shown in a small room (not a theatre) with banquet chairs for seating, and of course there is a fee for these documentary shorts. There are hundreds of people and buses coming in and out of this resort at all times, so catching a shuttle to our VERY far away, mediocre at best, hotel room was also a difficult and frustrating experience. We often waited 30 minutes in the rain. The shuttles are supposed to come every 15 minutes, but with all of the people there, they were often full, especially if it was raining.
One last disappointment: We got off the train in Talkeetna and then we were taken by the Princess shuttle bus to the Princess Center downtown. The Princess people told us the lodge was an hour away so we should enjoy the town of Talkeetna before we went out to check in the lodge. The problem was that we had carry-on luggage with us. Princess said they could not store luggage in their downtown center and they would not let anyone use the restroom. They directed us to one in the town center a quarter of a mile away - in the rain! Knowing their lodge is so far away, they should put some of the money they are making from "moving all these people in and out of their lodge" into making their town center more "guest-friendly" and also adding some much needed amenities to their Mt. McKinley resort. We would not recommend this resort to anyone.

Room Tip: There are no "good" rooms. If you must stay here, ask for a room close to the lodge!

We were satisfied with our accommodations. We were in Alaska and therefore expected nothing fancy. There really wasn't much to do here except take a 1 hr. bus ride into Talkeetna, which is a charming village and worth the trip. We were fortunate to have nice weather and the clouds moved out to give a spectacular view of Mt. McKinley both in the evening and again in the morning with the sun shining off the snow.

Room Tip: Cabins close to the main lodge are a must.

After leaving the cruise ship at 6am and then travelling on the train to Talkeetna for 5 hours it was a beautifull surprise to finally arrive here. It was lovey to have a clean comfy and really relaxing room for a good nights rest. We were able to see MT.Mckinley clear for 3 days straight the weather was perfect!!! We attended the lecture on earthquakes in Alaska and were rivited by the guy giving the informative talk. The food in the restaruant was fantactic as they had a special GLUTEN FREE MUNU with lots of choice. I wish we could have stayed for longer just to soak it all up.The staff were all very helpfull and kind going out of there way to give my the food I needed for my special diet requirments.Every thing was clean and well cared for, it was a pleasure to be there. I loved the colourfull hanging flower baskets every where.
