Economical stay but floor was dirty on arrival, they did vacuum when asked. Blinds were partially broken-blanket draped over window for privacy for us by staff. Dinner and breakfast were economical and delicious worth the stop on the way to and from Denali. Daughter of homesteader Mary Carey quite a character to talk with, author in her own right.
With tender loving care could be a great little hotel.

There were 6 of us traveling: myself, my husband, 2 teenagers and 2 younger children. We like to travel on a budget, so when I got 2 rooms for under $175, I really wasn't expecting much. We arrived hungry, because most of the places to eat around Denali were so expensive, we just couldn't let ourselves pay those prices for a meal. Pulling up we were hoping for a small meal and then a place to sleep. We went inside and were amazed by the beautiful lodge on the inside and a comfortable eating lounge. The menu had a nice assortment to choose from and the prices were actually very reasonable for the area. The food was delicious and we left quite fulfilled. Our server was pleasant even though we showed up 15 minutes before they stop serving (we really appreciated that!) We had 2 separate rooms- which our teenagers liked. The rooms are out back and if it hadn't been raining I'm told that the view of the mountain is breath-taking. The rooms could use some up-dating, but all in all the beds were comfortable and for the price, it was more than what we were expecting :-) Our next trip to Alaska, we would stay again, but maybe a little longer.
They have a gift shop and I could have talked forever to Jean Carey as she told stories about her mother who was a writer. I couldn't help to pick up several books for Christmas presents.
If you are interested in a grand room with all kinds of amenities, you can stay down the road and pay a grand price- it you are interested in slowing down and taking in the view, conversations, and dining on home made food, come check out McKinley View Lodge.

I stayed at the McKinley Lodge July 16-19.

Mary’s McKinley View Lodge is located about 5 miles inside Denali State Park. It sits on your right as you approach Denali from Anchorage. The Lodge offers one of the best views of Mt. McKinley anywhere!

The Lodge offers 8 rooms, each facing Mt. McKinley. The room was not a fancy room, but it was a very basic, comfortable motel room, befitting a setting within Denali State Park. I had a queen sized bed, a table and chairs, and a vanity and sink outside of the bathroom and shower. There was no air conditioning, but then it was in the 50s in the middle of July when I stayed there. There is no television in the room, but why would you want one?! The room was a little bare; although I did not miss a TV, I did miss having an alarm clock. But while I was there I found out that the Lodge supplies its own electricity by generator, so I could understand why they would not want to have potential unused appliances sucking up electricity.

Besides the view you get of Mount McKinley, the best thing about this Lodge is the diner-like café. I spent hours sitting in the café, reading a book, eating, having a beer from the bar and people watching. And people stream through the café all throughout the day.

The food is quite good. The owner Jean Carey Richardson’s son runs the café, and it is staffed by servers who’ll keep your coffee cup filled while telling you about run-ins with the local bears, or where to go hiking. And you’ve got to try some of the very yummy baked goods, which are baked right there on sight.

There’s a gift shop right as you enter the Lodge. It’s typically staffed by the owner herself. And the owner is the daughter of Mary Carey—a local legend in those parts of Alaska. Stop by and check out the wares, but stay to hear grand stories of Mary’s exploits, as Jean is an excellent story-teller. This was my favorite part of staying at the Lodge—the uniqueness and quaintness, as well as the hidden history that oozes from the rustic little place.

There are other larger lodges just outside of Denali State Park that have more/better amenities, and that are more suited for those looking for 4-star accommodations. But if you are looking for an inexpensive, comfortable place to stay INSIDE of Denali State Park, if you are looking for the best view of Mount McKinley, if you are looking for a little slice of history and local color, then Mary’s McKinley Lodge is the place to be!
