“Wonderful hotel and reefs”
Reviewed September 20, 2007

This is a remote and beautiful area of the Red Sea. Absolutely nothing outside the hotel. The journey from marsa alam airport is about 2 hours but the scenery is great. The hotel is well run with excellent food and spacious, well-equipped rooms. On the reefs expect to see turtles, Giant Trevally, napoleons and the odd shark. The staff are well trained, helpful and efficient.
The pools are well designed and well-maintained. The guests are mostly German, Swiss and Italian.
This is my third visit and I am planning many more.

Just back from a very good holiday at the Lahami Bay with my husband, who is a keen and experienced diver.

This is a long positing as it is the first on this hotel. Skip to the end for a summary.

The hotel facilities are generally excellent. The rooms are clean, spaceous and comfortable - with efficient air conditioning - much appreciated on the days when the temperature hit the mid 40 degree mark. The majority of the other guests were Italian when we were there - there were lots of Germans too - so a very cosmopolitan mix.

The diving was world class and well organised. My husband had a choice of day boats, small boats out to the house reef for a singe dive or diving from the shore. He loved it. Stunning coral and lots of interesting fish

I divided my time between snorkeling on the house reef and a sunbed by the large pool. The snorkeling was outstanding. I even saw a Napoleon Wrasse!

The food was generally very good. We were on half board. Breakfasts were excellent, with an egg chef on hand and lots of varieties of bread, cheeses, fruit, fresh yogurt etc. The buffet in the evening had lots of choice. I loved the first courses - lots of different Middle Eastern style salads. I was less enthusisatic about the 'International' cuisine main courses. However the standby was an excellent cook-on-the-spot Pasta Bar. For lunch there were good quality pizzas and a stunning mezze platter.

We made the mistake of going to the 'exclusive' a la carte restaurant for a special Red Sea Fish dinner. The setting was gorgeous but the food was not. The lobster was so overcooked it was not edible and everything was liberally doused in olive oil and rosemary leaves. I did wonder if any of the allegedly fresh fish had ever been near the Red Sea! We came to the conclusion the chefs were great when they understood the food - and if they didn't then it was a disaster! So it was back to the buffet for the rest of the two weeks.

The service in the restaurants was extremely good - helpful friendly and efficient. The waiters worked very hard indeed. This highlighted the dozy service from reception who seemed to have little idea of what was going on in the hotel - trying to to book a massage was a terrible performance. On our first day I asked how to get a beach towel - they said "On the beach". What they did not say was that only one beach had towels - for the others you had to go to the pool before going to the beach.

There are three different beach areas. All have fixed umbrellas and good quality wooden sunbeds with matresses. But two of the beaches are very shallow at low tide. The North Beach is where all the action happens... swimming, snorkelling, diving, towels ... but that is ten minutes walk away from the main hotel - twenty minutes from our room! On our second day I saw my husband off diving just before 8am and walked down to the North Beach only to find all the sunbeds had already been claimed. The next morning I got one of the last three beds at 7.30am. At that point I gave up on the contest and settled for sitting by the pool with a walk down to snorkel when required.

Try asking to book rooms close to the North Beach in advance - once you are there they won't do anything to change a room. Other guests tried but with no success.

The strange thing about this hotel was that once dinner was over everyone vanishes by about 9.30pm. The exception was the one night a week when there was a belly dancer when a small crowd stayed around. There was also a beach disco once a week - a few people trecked out to the North beach but it had no party spirit. As we had to be up early for diving early nights were not a problem but it felt very strange.

Even a long evening in the bar was not really an option.

The waiters in the pool bar do their best to prepare cocktails but they don't truely understand what to do - so most people stuck to beer or Egyptian wine - or orange juice as I did. The fresh mango juice was delicious when it was available

To sum up. Brilliant place to go if you are a diver or keen snorkeler. It suffers a bit from a lack of joined up thinking from the management. I am glad we went and would reccomend it to some friends but not sure we would go back - we will try other places first.
