Just arrived home after a 2 week stay at the Calimera (18 April to 2 May). On arrival about 4.30pm, we received a free cocktail and check-in was quick and pleasant. We were taken to our room which was a standard and was very clean and quite a good size. However, we did upgrade to a royal suite a few days later which was brilliant. The only thing is they are at the top of the complex so there are stairs to climb to get to them but well worth it. The bags arrived about 10 minutes later with no problems. We then went to find the restaurant to have some tea. The only thing is that no-one actually showed us where anything was on arrival (you get the grand tour the next morning) but we found people who knew where it was. The staff were very friendly and the food was nice thoughout the stay but we did eat at the Lebonese which was not expensive and really nice.
While we were there it changed to Egyptian summer time and the temp just shot up (don't need a cardigan on the night now). We did not have any problems with mosquitos but there are loads of flies which can be a nuisance at times (suppose this is to be expected though). We did do two of the tours, the quad bikes and the desert safari, both of which were great and well worth it (on the safari by jeep, you get to star gaze on the night and can take a picture of saturn and the moon (turned out fab on my camera).
On the complex there are a few bars, the beach bar and 3 pool bars but we mainly used the active bar. The waiters and bar lads were fantastic, they could not do enough for us. They do like a laugh and carry on (in fact most of the Egyptian's we met did). The cleaners, gardeners and security guys in fact all the staff were very polite. They were a few spoke English well more than others but we did pick up a few words of Arabic and they all got the jist of what you wanted. About the drinks, the local shorts are to be desired but the beer is not bad at all. I had vodka on the last night and wished I had not bothered (they don't do small measures). My partner did a 4 day PADI open water diving course while we were there, and it is the place to dive or snorkel, the fish are amazing.
In all it was a fantastic hotel with great staff and we met some lovely English guests and this combined made our holiday great. When we were leaving, one of the waiters came to see us on the bus and we could have stayed longer. If you are thinking of going here, this is the time to do it if you are looking for a quiet and relaxing holiday before it gets too commercialised.
Best wishes to all the people we met while we were there.
