We stayed at the Lamaya for the 7th time for 2 weeks at the beginning of October. Check in was not as organised as in previous years, I think as there were so few new arrivals. We had requested the room we’d stayed in previously but were given a room in a different block. It transpired that this was because the room we’d asked for was being refurbished, but it would have been nice if reception staff had told us this, rather than us having to ask if they’d forgotten our request. The room we were given smelt horrible, but we went back to reception who arranged to move us to another room which was better.
It was great to see that a lot of the staff we knew from previous years were still there, and that generally the high standards had been maintained. All the staff here are fantastic; they are so friendly and helpful and seem as if they are genuinely happy working there and making your stay as good as possible. We were given a small allowance of free wi-fi in the lobby area, which was an improvement on previous years and is something we normally look for when choosing hotels. The Thomson rep Ahmed was excellent, and was always on hand if you wanted to speak to him without being intrusive.
We went to see our tree (over by the tennis court) and were sad to see the area is now a dumping ground for old furniture. The name post was on the wrong tree too!
Food is generally good and unless you are a particularly fussy eater you’d always be able to find something you like to eat. We’ve had better food in hotels we’ve stayed at in other countries, but it’s the best we’ve had in any Egyptian hotel we’ve stayed at. Our room was rather dated and tired, but was kept very nice and clean each day. They are in the process of refurbishing rooms so we look forward to seeing an improvement next time.
The snorkelling was excellent still, and considering the number of tourists snorkelling and diving in the bay the reef and marine life are still in very good condition. We went on the Oceans boat trip to Marsa Mubarak and it was a shame to see that a lot of the coral was dead. We had a very good day though, were very well looked after by the crew, and saw several large turtles and a dugong (sea cow).
All in all we had a lovely holiday and look forward to returning next year
