“Second Home”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 23, 2013

My friend and I have just returned from our third visit to the Oriental Bay in Marsa Alam. It seemed like coming home. Many staff were waiting to greet us, so lovely seeing old friends.
We come to this hotel because we never feel like guests, more like much loved and respected members of a very large family!
I had requested certain room numbers via e mail and of course we had been allocated them. Rooms (apartments really, I think they were built as timeshare originally) were very clean, as usual.
Down to the pool in the morning – Ayman who was on the beach last year was waiting for us in the Pool Bar. Looked so pleased to see us – again greeting another old friend. And then comes Tag, the boy who organises our sunbeds and towels. He'd known we were coming and had put towels out on the sunbeds we used last time. He remembered.
In the restaurant Hamdy the restaurant manager was rushing to say hello – so lovely to feel that they are really pleased to see us again. I asked him if I could take some milk back to the room so I could make a cup of tea. No problem he said and when I got back there was a carton of milk and a load more tea bags there. Because I need a walking stick the buffet menu could be a bit of a problem, but Hamdy is always on hand to take my plate, fetch me soup etc. He is still a bit puzzled that I don't like desserts, and prefer to have another soup instead, but he is far to polite to say anything!
Must mention Ahmed from the restaurant. My friend Pauline had arranged a meal at the Al a Carte Fish restaurant for my birthday and Ahmed was the only one waiting on us that night. He had two flight of stairs to negotiate with our wine and the food, but was still so cheerful and attentive. Then Hamdy brought a birthday cake in which was a lovely touch.
In the Piano bar we also got special treatment – other Ahmed watching out for us and drinks on the way as we sat down. He tried to make me tomato juice at one point – he got a plateful of tomatoes and blitzed them up. Result not too good, very watery, but how wonderful to make such an effort. He also looked after us at the beach, brought us pizza and grilled fish which was divine. Also in the Piano bar was Mohamed who Pauline says makes the best cocktails ever. I agree but feel I must be loyal to Ahmed!
Oh nearly forgot to mention Tarek cut his vacation short because his 'two sisters' were coming to stay! He and Mahmoud are the managers of the beach and pool bars and nothing is too much trouble for them to arrange. They love the British.
All of us Brits were invited to a free meal from the Lebanese a la carte restaurant by the manager on the Monday night. Wonderful food, really tasty, far too much though.
Pauline and I are thinking about going back in October / November this year, and we know we will get a fantastic reception at our 'second home'.

Room Tip: Block one can be a bit noisy as its on the walkway to the beach. Top floors are quieter (no clip clo...

Stayed at the Oriental Bay in Marsa Alam for 1 week at the end of Feb. Room was massive and cleaned thouroughly every day. Beach an easy walk across the road. They always had someone there to see you across. Beach bar brilliant with fresh pizza cooked every day.
The staff at the hotel were amazing. Ahmed and Denzil were the best barman you could ever meet. All the staff in the restaurant were brilliant and could not do enough for you. Food was good and drinks were fantastic. Note...you could not get wine outside of the restaurant! Animation team were very friendly and fun. All in all a very good experience.

Stayed for two weeks at the end of October. It was our first time to Oriental Bay but not to Marsa Alam, having had seven holidays there in the past few years. The hotel is everything we hoped it would be from reading previous reviews, the beach is an easy walk and has the best coral for snorkelling that we have found.Turtles, eagle rays and a wide variety of reef fish all frequent the bay.The beach bar serves pizza and salads and good quality drinks, and always with a smile. Our days on the beach were made extra special by Ayman, who was always going the extra mile to look after everyone. All the staff were the most friendly we have ever found on holiday, from Mahmood in the piano bay who remembered exactly what we liked to drink,to all the restaurant staff who made every meal a pleasure. Mahmood even made us a chicken curry one evening.Thank you Mr Walid and you wonderful staff ,we will see you in April.

We booked this hotel a week before we went and were a bit sceptical of Marsa Alam. Never heard of it before and it's miles from Cairo so we went.

First impressions of the Hotel were what I expected, wonderful and appealing after a Long Flight. A few of the reviews on here are not accurate at all - and this is an accurate review!

Few things First:

The Hotel: The Hotel is situated about 24km from Marsa Alam, and about half an hours drive from Port Ghalib. It's in a remote location next to the Red Sea but that's whats really nice about it!!!!!!!! The Walk is 150m if that to the beach from the Hotel Reception which is about three minutes - not 10 or 20 as posted on some of the reviews here! There is a beach bar with toilets, snorkel and flipper hire and bar snacks as well. There are windbreaks available for the Red Sea Breeze. Also, the hotel has three pools! One main pool near up top, another one near the bottom, and a heated one between the two on the right hand side. Be warned though - some guests were reserving some beds and clearing off for breakfast or lunch!

The Staff: Never met such hard working staff in my life. They do Breakfast from 0700, up until Dinner which finishes about 2300. Tarek the bar Manager was brilliant during our stay, and Ahmed our waiter was faultless througout. I will never forget the "Welcome to the Arab Republic of Mojito". Emed was superb as well, and was always smiling and entertained us! There are loads of staff I would like to thank but can't list them all here!

The Food: People moaned here about the food variety but they seem to forget the hotel is in the middle of the desert so they have obvious logistical issues! The food they do provide is cooked to a very good standard and for the british - chips? If you don't ask you don't get! They do them on request.

Drinks: A bottle of wine was £35 but if you were all inclusive wine and beer were free but served by the glass. Can't moan, the staff bought you drinks all the time, bars were spread out around the hotel and drinks were fine.

Rooms: All of the rooms were air conditioned and our room we had was amazingly cool even in the hot sun. The double beds (proper doubles not two singles put together!) were very comfortable and we slept well throughout the week. Rooms were cleaned daily and so were the bed sheets. You were given bottles of water in the room free of charge every day. Some of the towel sculptures were amazing. The showers here are powerful and hot unlike some other hotels where it's wishy washy. Mind you it's solar heated so no excuse really!!!!

Activities: The hotel has "Animation" laid on throughout the day and evening. Most of the daytime activities consisted of Water Polo, Snooker or Gym type activities. In the evening however, it varied from Belly Dancing, Fakir Fire Show and African and Nubian Night. This along with Shisha for LE£50 was a brilliant experience. Thanks to all!

Excursions to do:

Super Safari without a doubt. £59 for an Adult and I cannot fault it. Quadbiking, Camel Riding, Sunset in the Desert, meal and drinks included, and you get to see the stars through a telescope as well as dancing in the middle of the desert.

Port Ghalib is another excursion we did. This was £12 each return and it was lovely. Sitting by the marina having a beer, looking at all the catamarans and sunseeker yachts on display. Be warned though. If they offer you a price in the shops, haggle. Half Again and a bit less.

Mr Walid, we'll be back.

Room Tip: If you ask for a sea view, don't choose any in Building two on any floor, you get a view of a pa...

Very relaxing break, nice pools and setting with some great staff.
Tarik & Ahmed made our stay specicial with excellent service and attention to details, Ahmed made us laugh every day and Tarik made sure things ran smoothly throughout.
Ayman at the pool bar is a star with excellent service and a really good memory and very polite.
I celebrated my 50th Birthday with a Lenanese meal served beside the swimming pool which at night is a great setting.
Tarik brought a cake and the staff sang Happy Birthday which was a very nice touch.
It is very obvious that the staff at this hotel are very proud of the hotel and extremely keen to improve if needed. Our room was kept very clean by Hamdi who worked hard every day and was always smiling, the rest of the hotel was kept clean and well presented.
The Turkish Hamam was well worth having, professional staff and well organised.
Thanks everyone for a great time Paul & Debbie or Nada & Fereida as Ahmed named us.

We stayed here for a two week break and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We had a very spacious room with a comfortable bed; there were also tea and coffee making facilities, a flat screen tv with DVD player, and a room safe. The food was good with some show cooking at each meal, but as with many buffet style restaurants meals were not really an occasion. We were however treated to a restaurant meal once during our stay which was very enjoyable. The service throughout the hotel and at the beach was great; nothing was too much trouble. The dining room staff were extremely good, especially Ahmed and Hamdi, and Ayman at the pool bar was very attentive and brought us drinks to the poolside.Drinks were plentiful and we found good company amongst the other guests, even though there were relatively few English people at the hotel. There was entertainment every night with plenty of local colour. We enjoyed going snorkelling from the hotel beach and were impressed with the great variety brightly coloured fish and corals. This hotel may not suit people who are looking for shopping as there are no large towns nearby, and the hotel is isolated, but we found it ideal as all we wanted was a quiet relaxing break in the sun.
