My friend and I have just returned from our third visit to the Oriental Bay in Marsa Alam. It seemed like coming home. Many staff were waiting to greet us, so lovely seeing old friends.
We come to this hotel because we never feel like guests, more like much loved and respected members of a very large family!
I had requested certain room numbers via e mail and of course we had been allocated them. Rooms (apartments really, I think they were built as timeshare originally) were very clean, as usual.
Down to the pool in the morning – Ayman who was on the beach last year was waiting for us in the Pool Bar. Looked so pleased to see us – again greeting another old friend. And then comes Tag, the boy who organises our sunbeds and towels. He'd known we were coming and had put towels out on the sunbeds we used last time. He remembered.
In the restaurant Hamdy the restaurant manager was rushing to say hello – so lovely to feel that they are really pleased to see us again. I asked him if I could take some milk back to the room so I could make a cup of tea. No problem he said and when I got back there was a carton of milk and a load more tea bags there. Because I need a walking stick the buffet menu could be a bit of a problem, but Hamdy is always on hand to take my plate, fetch me soup etc. He is still a bit puzzled that I don't like desserts, and prefer to have another soup instead, but he is far to polite to say anything!
Must mention Ahmed from the restaurant. My friend Pauline had arranged a meal at the Al a Carte Fish restaurant for my birthday and Ahmed was the only one waiting on us that night. He had two flight of stairs to negotiate with our wine and the food, but was still so cheerful and attentive. Then Hamdy brought a birthday cake in which was a lovely touch.
In the Piano bar we also got special treatment – other Ahmed watching out for us and drinks on the way as we sat down. He tried to make me tomato juice at one point – he got a plateful of tomatoes and blitzed them up. Result not too good, very watery, but how wonderful to make such an effort. He also looked after us at the beach, brought us pizza and grilled fish which was divine. Also in the Piano bar was Mohamed who Pauline says makes the best cocktails ever. I agree but feel I must be loyal to Ahmed!
Oh nearly forgot to mention Tarek cut his vacation short because his 'two sisters' were coming to stay! He and Mahmoud are the managers of the beach and pool bars and nothing is too much trouble for them to arrange. They love the British.
All of us Brits were invited to a free meal from the Lebanese a la carte restaurant by the manager on the Monday night. Wonderful food, really tasty, far too much though.
Pauline and I are thinking about going back in October / November this year, and we know we will get a fantastic reception at our 'second home'.
