“Disappointing visit”
Reviewed January 30, 2013

We have just return from a week at the Oriental Bay. The reviews I read prior to booking suggested this was a great choice. We arrived and were very disappointed with our room as we're other guests we meet. The rooms were big but they were not very clean. We meet people from Bury and Leeds. The earlier reviews are not a true reflection of the hotel. The food was basic and nearly the same every day. The hotel advertised entertainment and then changed it at the last minute. The bar staff tried very hard there was the pool bar and the lobby bar staff who were excellent. The gym was very good and we would recommend a massage. The hotel has a problem with flys and people even suggested bed buds. Most people had been bitten. The hotel is in need of a refurbishment.

We have just returned from a weeks stay at this hotel and were glad to get home. Having read the reviews prior to our departure we were looking forward to relaxing in a 5 star hotel? How wrong could we be.

The flight and transfers were great but when we arrived at the hotel our first impression of the hotel was disappointment. On arrival we used the toilets in the reception and they were dirty and this did not change during our stay. This started to cast doubts on the cleanliness of the rest of the hotel. To be fair the bedroom was very good. It appeared to be clean, large and with a pool view. It had 2 bedrooms which was just right for our needs as my wife and I were sharing it with my sister. After our first meal that evening we all thought that it would not be that bad.

When we woke after our first night we all had been bitten by mosquitos. They did come and spray the room but this should have been done prior to our arrival. Having talked to other guests they had the same problem.

The first morning we decided to go to the beach this is a quarter of a mile away from our hotel room and across the main road. The beds on the beach were fine and the sea was good for snorkeling. The staff on the beach were great and could not do enough for you. The food though at the beach bar was very limited and cold.

The weather turned cloudy for the next 4 days and on the 5th day it rained, so this put a dampener on the whole holiday, as the hotel put very little entertainment on during this period. The hotel is miles from anywhere with very little walks where you can venture out of the hotel.

So to recap the whole holiday :- 1) Staff great. 2) Rooms good. 3) Food average. 4) Location poor. 5) Weather awful.

We have stayed in Egypt many times but this hotel is the worst and we will not be coming back

Room Tip: Have one overlooking the pool as the garden rooms face the busy main road which is very busy with tr...

First impressions of this hotel- we were disappointed. we have previously stayed at Coraya, Lamaya, Three Corners and Sol Y Mar Abu Dabbab and this hotel seemed neglected and tatty in places. We still enjoyed our holiday and think it is good value for money but would only go to this hotel again if the price was right compared to others. In our opinion the positives were:
Comfortable double bed, effective air con, powerful and hot shower.
Pool complex, including heated pool in winter.
Big and thick beach towels. Lovely reef- lots of beautiful fish and turtles most days.Big, wooden sun beds with thick cushions.
soup was hot and tasty. Croissants good. Pancake station appreciated. liked coffee machines.
Piano bar was well maintained and comfortable.

what we did not like:
did not need the kitchen area- seemed like wasted space and being all inclusive seemed pointless. Bathroom looked old and tired. Limited provision of toiletries ( other hotels had wall dispensers of shower gel, soap, etc)
Food was ok. Limited variety compared to other hotels, even on the grill section, which was the same every day. I found the wine undrinkable so stuck to beer and spirits with mixers. bread uninteresting and toaster inefficient. Very limited options on the beach- Other hotels had nice beach restaurants, especially Sol Y Mar. Very limited snacks or ice cream.
walking over the road to the beach. Not far but just a bit awkward. reef not very well cared for- rope left hanging down and reef becoming damaged. When the water was murky it wasn't always easy to find your way and easy to encroach on the reef. Outside the beach area lots of litter lying around.

Not related to the hotel, but the area- We were convinced this area is always sunny but this year we had 4 cloudy days including a days' rain- very unlucky but obviously it is winter there. also the last 2 days the sea was full of tiny stingers, presumably jellyfish. Ok with a wetsuit, but My legs have loads of itchy spots. also lots of mosquitoes there. The hotel does spray daily but still got some bites.

We had a nice relaxing holiday at this hotel, our room was large and kept clean the food was ok but sometimes cold .The drinks were not so good warm flat beer and mixers in the piano bar but better in the pool bar.The pool complex and gardens were first class the staff friendly. The beach was ok but no water sports as advertised. There was not three restaurants open,no money exchange,no tennis courts all of which were advertised by first choice..The hotel was very remote .One real complaint would be that the toilets in the lobby were filthy out of character with the rest of the hotel.SoSo although we had a nice time all was not as advertised

We stayed at the Oriental Bay in Marsa Alam for one week in January. We had the best time, the hotel was comfortable, nothing was too much for the staff, indeed they catered to our every wish. They were friendly, warm and approachable and the entire team made us feel extremely welcome. Would I holiday there again? a BIG resounding YES!!. Excellent ;-)

The only two negatives was the animation (entertainment) was a bit tired but I think this was due to us holidaying in winter and there was only one heated pool, the rest of the pools were freezing, but again I should not think that would matter too much at the height of the season when temperatures can reach the 40's and sometimes 50's.......I would advise that people take insect repellant and the various other toiletries one may need as shopping for them in the hotel shops and surrounding areas proved expensive.

a very relaxing week in January was spent at this very nice & stylish hotel. The staff are fantastic & cannot do enough for you,Forever friendly & helpful. The Animation ( Entertainment ) guy is very good at what he does.Tries to get everybody involved. The food was OK,Not Great!.At Breakfast, you have a choice of Salad & Cold meats & cheese,Hot bar of chicken or beef sausage(spiced)Boiled egg & Beans. There is also a chef at the top of the Restaraunt who freshly cooks eggs to your liking & Pancakes.Lunch was the only time they had Fries. For Dinner you always had a choice of Fish,Chicken or Beef served with Rice , various Veg & various types of potatoes,Again at the top a chef freshly cooks pasta daily & another chef cooks various meals from Steak medallions to Stir Fry to Barbied Fish.At the beach bar you are daily served Pizza,Flat Bread,Spiced Meat/Burger & Salad. We stayed in a suite which had a Bedroom with TV (bbc World News & Channel showing English film every 2Hr's) & Shower,a kitchen type area for the Kettle and a lounge to relax, There is also another bedroom which has its own door number in the suite, whether the lounge becomes a shared lounge when the hotel is full i don't know! All the suites have their own balcony which are always in shade, which will probably be a relief in the height of Summer. There are 3 pools,1 is heated. We didn't choose to go to Luxor as it was £90 each. There is a taxi in reception which you can get which was about 200 euro Return. We went for a chill & the Sun which we got,But 1 week was long enough as around the hotel all you have is Desert. No shops to stroll around !apart from 3 on site which i may add had friendly staff. All in All a very good holiday.

Having just returned from a week at this hotel, the staff couldn't do enough for you. They were all very friendly, attentive and welcoming. We travelled with a young child and they kept her entertained, nothing was too much trouble for them.

The rooms were basic but cleaned daily with fresh towels often in the shape of various animals. When we arrived the sink in the room was leaking but once mentioned at reception this was fixed right away. I'd recommend you take mosquito spray and repellent as there was a lot of them of an evening. The food was brilliant, something for everyone, a selection of fresh fruit and desserts. A lot of people are worried about cleanliness in Egypt but we ate all of the meat, fresh fruit, vegetables, and lots more and didnt have a problem at all.

I used the spa facilities and had to haggle with the fella selling them around the pool/beach as his original prices were extortionate. She felt very relaxed after a massage and pedicure but the woman doing her treatments couldn't speak English so there was no conversation.

Overall we had a very pleasant holiday and would definitely recommend, the hotels motto is 'come as a guest, leave as a friend' and you certainly do.
