My family and I spent a week at the Oriental Bay at the end of August. It was a last minute deal and reasonable.
Arrival and check-in was excellent. Easy, quick and staff took bags from the bus to your room. The rooms are huge! Between three of us we had two large rooms, both on-suite and a living room / kitchen with balcony.
Location is very isolated, there is literally nothing around. It is a short walk to a private beach which is ideal for shallow swimming and snorkelling.
Food was a bit up and down and gets a bit boring as the week goes on with only one restaurant. There are two others you can pay for but at €35 a head this is a bit steep. If you like pasta, you will be fine as there is a pasta station with a choice of sauces every lunch and dinner to cater for the predominantly Italian population.
They had a BBQ going every night and a fresh cook area. Chips are only out once a week so warn the kids!!
Plenty of sunbeds around the pool and at the beach even when we went in August and 4 pools are nice and never overcrowded. In fact the whole Hotel seemed very quiet even though they were at capacity.
Entertainment is what you would expect and is geared towards the Italians. I didn't see, approached by or was involved with any of the animation team throughout my week, not that this was an issue for me.
I would recommend taking a taxi to the Marina and Marsa Alam town if you want to break the week up. There are so lovely restaurants and very cheap. The taxi will cost between €7 and €10 per head return and can be organised at the Hotel.
My 2 'complaints' are it lacks a proper bar and a snack service. There is the swim up pool bar and a bar in the lobby but it would be nice to have a proper bar where you can relax and have a drink. It would also be nice to have a snack bar serving the usual fare rather than having to go to or wait for the main restaurant to open. The 'disco bar' doesn't open until 11pm (when the all-inclusive ends).
The staff also deserve a mention (particularly the bar staff) as they work tirelessly but always have a smile.
Overall a nice place to relax but it is nothing spectacular.
