I've been to this place about 8 times, it's still a great place to go but the gloss has worn off. You now have to pay for truck dives (used to be free), you have to pay for a single tent (used to be free), no safe to store your passport and money (used to have that option) - although the tents are really safe for storing your valuables - may be I was just lucky. The facilities have been improved, the outdoor lockers and equipment bays are much better - the food's better too, really good actually!
As a diver it's a great place to improve your skills, take care of yourself with unsupervised dives and build your confidence. What could be better???
The aquatic life is still there but it's not as abundant as it was about 12 years ago and the reef shows signs of wear - sadly over dived but still a great place to go...
Marsa Shagra used to be a stand alone dive centre - no hotels either side but this has changed. There's a really annoying Italian resort to the north (the left) where you'll hear the sounds of talentless competitions and 'thud thud' techno while trying to sleep. The sound is carried by the wind, nothing you can do about it apart from wearing headphones (no techno while sleeping) and ear plugs. §
