“Still the same in Marsa Shagra...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 11, 2011

I've been here once a year for about the last 5 years. The food has got better! The tents are the same, love those tents. The diving is still good but you have to be more patient to see the good stuff. They have a new digital dive booking system on site, - it's a bit crap really. The choice of dives by truck appears to be sadly reduced and it repeats trips to local dive sites (boo hiss). Apart from that the facilities have improved, they let you do your own thing and it's pretty good value for the money. Be careful not to go when a dive club goes, they dominate the place which isn't too great.

Room Tip: Remember to check the temperature prior to booking a tent, - what time of the year is it? There'...

Hello,

thank you for writing a review about us on Trip Advisor. We take all our guests' opinions and comments very seriously and value them as a possibility to improve our service.
We'd like to take the time to respond to your review:

We are very glad you feel our food and facilities have improved, we are constantly working on new menus and ideas to satisfy our guests.

The choice of truck dives is a bit more limited than in the past because new resorts have bought these pieces of land, from which we entered the water before.
But to keep these dive sites available for our guests, many of them can now be reached by RIB, all info can be found on our dive site page on our website.

We also try to make the dive booking system for our guests as convenient as possible, which is why we replaced the old tedious list system with the new modern digital touch screen system.
We of course respect your opinion which is why we'd be glad to get a more diversified explanation as to why you do not find the new booking system convenient. Maybe it could help us to improve it.
We'd be glad to receive an e-mail from you.

Thank you again for taking the time to review your stay at Shagra Village and we really hope to see you back again in Shagra for a 6th time - or maybe try our southernmost villages Marsa Nakari or Wadi Lahami!

Best regards,

the Red Sea Diving Safari Team

An absolutely fantastic week spent in Marsa Shagra, great place, beautiful reef, great people, professional staff : just loved it and found all we were expecting plus a bit more ... Dolphins, shark, dugong & many fishes and corals, with the flexibility of unlimited house reef diving.
Just a small hint for Elphinstone (at least at the dates we went) : try to go at the earliest time (6 am) to get a quiet sea and the best of marine life !
Looking forward to next trip there, and already planning for 2012 ...

This was my first visit to Ecolodge Shagra Village as a participant of a technical diving course. The site and the shore are superb, the staff is helpful and the food is good.
We stayed in a basic canvas tent directly on the shore with a fantastic view to the see. So it seemed a perfect week of diving adventure but sadly the beer was highly overpriced. :)

Room Tip: Ask a tent from the first row on the shore.

I'd been before but this was the first time for my partner and our two children (aged 10 and 13). Both did courses (junior open water and junior advanced open water) and both instructors (Berry and Mahmoud) were brilliant with them. All staff were unfailingly helpful and friendly, facilities were clean and efficient and food was really good (and so much of it!). If you're after night life and cocktails though, this is definitely not the place for it. Plenty of people have a beer after diving, but it doesn't seem to go much beyond that and people turn in quite early. I have to mention how lovely the dive and restaurant staff were with the children -it made their holiday (though I would say that children need to be old enough to be relatively independent and aware of risks of being around heavy and expensive equipment). It's still definitely a dive/snorkelling centre rather than a typical beach resort, but that's exactly what we like about it. House reefs are excellent and healthy, saw turtles, baby sharks, morays, nudibranchs, blennies.

I was a little unsure what to expect as this was not our usual type of holiday. We were not disappointed. Although it is very much a dive oriented resort, as snorkellers we still had a fantastic time. The house reef is great, and we even saw turtles!!
The chalet we stayed in was greatm clean, cool and we have no complaints on any of the facilties. the food was good, if a little repetitive, you have to get there early if you like a pipin g hot meal as the buffett style can go a little cold. The only slight criticism I would have is that for breakfast fresh filter coffee would have been nice instead of instant, and some sun loungers on the beach would be good. Excellent trip though - if you ae looking to go book through these guys http://www.dolphinswims.co.uk/

Fourth time to Marsa Alam, and second time to Marsa Shagra.Booked through Oonadivers, who are excellent as well, their knowledge of the holidays is brilliant.

Seemless transfer to the resort, only 40 minutes from the airport. Allocated our room and bags taken their by the staff. Room was a "hut" and was very clean, airy and perfect for a week in Feb. Toilets/showers were spotless.

Food was great as always. But what makes this place special is the helpful and friendly staff and the great unlimited diving. We ahve searched and have not found a place that offers such good varied diving like Marsa Shagra does.

Was nice as well to pretty much have the place to ourselves, with the troubles in Cairo, a lot of european countries stopped travel to Egypt, so at most there was 30 people there.

Was sad to leave, but happy that we are back in August.

I've just seen this on Trip advisor - I did not write it up after our last visit.
I have had 4 visits and plan to go again next year. I have done over 20 Red Sea trips and Shagra is my favourite place by far.
Yes, the area is getting more built up, yes, they are modernising.. but Shagra retains its charm and returing guests feel like old friends coming home.
We had our underwater wedding here last year and they pulled out all the stops for us, giving us a fantastic holiday. Last visit, we stayed in an air conditioned chalet. I normally stay in a tent. Both are excellent, and the tents are superb - poshest tents I've ever stayed in.
What brings me back again and again is the diversity of the marine life on the house reefs. It is so beautiful and you always manage to spot something you haven't seen before. It is a diver's dream.
The only cons... the beds are too hard in the tents and the surrounding hotels have noisy "disco nights" sometimes. I now take ear plugs and blot it out. A small price to pay for the best dive place I have ever been to.
Nothing beats getting up at sunrise and falling into clear, blue, warm water for a pre-breakfast dive and then eating on the restaurant terrace overlooking the turqoise splarkling bay. It is magical.
I defy any diver to criticise the pristine reefs and bountiful sea life at Shagra.
Only very fussy people used to posh hotels would not want to return to this fabulous place.
