This hotel wasn't the one we booked, but when First Choice pulled out of the other hotel, this was the one we picked as an alternative. Glad we did!

We travelled on 31st July to 14th August 2013.

The hotel is relatively small with only 130 rooms. The room cleaners left us new towel arrangements each day ranging from elephants and crocodiles to a monkey hanging from the ceiling just inside the door!! The rooms were always clean and the beds were very comfy.

The staff are brilliant, nothing was too much trouble. I asked Chef Ahmed for rice pudding and he added it to the breakfast choice every day!

The food was terrific, all the normal choices for breakfast, cereals, meats, cheeses, yoghurts, fruit, pancakes, waffles, potatoes, scrambled egg, hot tomatoes, together with numerous choices of bread and rolls. The chef would even cook you an omelette to order.

Lunch had hot and cold choices, of salads, potatoes, rice, chicken, beef, fish, vegetables etc. Also the chef again would cook pasta with a choice of sauce and ingredients.

Dinner in the evening again include hot and cold choices, and most nights included an outside bbq.

No-one within our party had any upset stomachs whilst we were there!!

The waiters soon got to know you and remembered your drinks. Special thanks go to Ragaab, Ahmed and Hassan, all very friendly and helpful.

The pool bar served drinks from 9 am to 5.30pm and pizzas from noon. Ice cream was also available. My husband got up early one day, 4.45am, and sat by the pool reading and was soon brought a drink!!
You could collect your own drinks or the pool waiters would take orders and bring it to you, they again remembered your likes.

The access to the beach was within easy walking distance - approximately 10 minutes walk, there was a beach bar which served the same as the pool bar, along with a restaurant for lunchtimes.

The evening entertainment from the animation team was typical of other hotels in Egypt - good but not great - although a lot of effort was put into it. During the day they organised water polo, water aerobics, stretching, volleyball, and archery.

The shops around the hotel Souk area sold the general souvenirs. Mohamed from Shop number 6, jewellery shop opposite the Lamaya Hotel, was extremely helpful, honest and did not hassle you to enter his shop. I bought a gorgeous blue opal elephant ring for a very reasonable price. He's well worth a visit!!

The staff were always asking if every thing was alright and that you were happy. If you had a problem they would sort it out straight away. Not that I had any problems.

There is a dive company which serves the 4 hotel complex, but my son, aged 17, dived with Emperor Divers, which we booked from the UK prior to going, which is run by an English Couple, Luke and Tracey. A bus collects you from the hotel reception at 7.35am each day and brings you back later. The dive boats range in size but are all well equipped and the lunches on board were very good. The boats are based at Port Ghalib - 10 minutes up the road.

With all the problems in Cairo and other cities, we did not have any problems what so ever, it was like being in another country. The only way we heard about the problems was on the BBC World News in our room.

We enjoyed our holiday so much we are already looking to book again for next year!!

Room Tip: Rooms on the top floor are quieter.

Just returned from an amazing two weeks at this hotel and haven’t stopped talking about it since getting back and already looking to return next year – assuming First Choice continue to have flights from Manchester (although been on their website and not looking good at the moment). Before I went I had mixed feelings about going to Egypt in July/August because of the heat and had also had friends who had been to Sharm el Sheikh and been ill so wasn’t sure what to expect – but I needn’t have worried, although temperatures were about 35 degrees, there was a nice breeze round the pool and we were sensible and stayed in the shade during the hottest part of the day, didn’t have ice cold drinks or the air conditioning too cold in the room and we weren’t ill at all.

I also had high expectations based on the reviews on trip advisor and it didn’t fail to live up to them. From arriving at the airport, not having long to wait for luggage as Marsa Alam is only a small airport, about 15 minutes to transfer to the hotel and being met by the Manager with Cocktails it was all a good start. He then escorted everyone to their rooms, luggage turned up a few minutes later and we then went to the restaurant for something to eat – although the restaurant had closed for the evening they provided us with a 3 course meal.

Staff at the hotel were exceptional – nothing was too much trouble, every day you were asked if everything was ok and was there anything else we needed – if you come back from this hotel unhappy you only have yourself to blame because they give you lots of opportunity for feedback. Our room was on the second floor with a pool view and was cleaned every day with the room boy leaving us a towel animal – including a rabbit, turtle, crocodile and one day a monkey hanging from the ceiling ! He also left us two bottles of water every day and if we ran out we could always refill them from the water machine at the pool bar.

Once the staff knew what we were drinking, we didn’t need to ask again – Mohammed around the pool always seemed to time it right bringing us drinks without us having to ask - on the odd occasion I walked to the pool bar he told me to sit back down and he would bring them. Same in the restaurant, no sooner had we walked through the door drinks were on the table. The Chef was always present in the restaurant making sure everyone was happy with the food, and asking whether there was anything else we wanted – one night we asked for chips for the kids and the next night they were there, although to be fair they could have had chips every day at the beach bar. He also came round the pool and beach bar in the afternoon, just when it was getting a bit hot with slices of melon which was so refreshing and the hand-made chocolates he brought round after dinner was a nice touch.

We had no problems getting sunbeds every day, there were plenty to go round and you didn’t have to put your towels out to reserve them which makes a nice change !

There was lots to do throughout the day for both adults and kids (if you wanted to join in). I’m not normally a pool person but I was in there several times a day and even did aqua-aerobics several times – Omar made it fun even though I was useless at it and was a good way to get to know other guests. All the staff took time out to chat and find out a bit more about us and it really made us feel welcome. Ahmed, the Thomson/First Choice Rep was also excellent – every day he made an effort to come and find us round the pool and took time out to speak to all the English Families. The water park right next door to the hotel was great for the kids – so close they could go by themselves and only a 5 minute walk to the beach, the water was so clear you could see the fish on the reef and was great for snorkelling.

We’ve been on several All Inclusive holidays over the last couple of years, but this has to be the best, so relaxing and definitely one to return to.

Room Tip: Pool View on 2nd Floor

This was our 2nd visit to the Dar el Medina & it exceeded all our expectations. Once again the staff went out of their way to make sure our stay was a memorable one. From the moment we arrived until the time we departed for the airport we were treated like royalty It is the little extras like the fruit in the afternoon & the chocolates in the evening which set this hotel apart from others. We will definitely be returning.

Room Tip: A pool view is very nice

This is one of four hotels in Coraya bay, a bay on the coast (actually about 40km from Marsa Alam), but near the airport (expect to pay about 80-100LE for the taxi journey- haggle hard). All the hotels seem to be run by the same company. The whole set of hotels seem to be a newly built holiday complex with no local town.

We also visited some of the other towns in the area including Port Ghalib (which was an artificial town, a bit deserted), and went through Marsa Alam (not much to see, only a port).

Good rooms- very clean, the pool area was not too overcrowded and the cocktails were good (they even made me a Pina Colada that was not on the cocktail menu). The house beach was about 10 minutes walk and the house reef that could be accessed by a jetty was pretty and a good place to learn to dive.

Now the little negatives

1. This is the only hotel in the bay not directly on the seafront- none of the rooms therefore have a sea view, and the beach is further away from this hotel when compared with the others

2. The food was average- but given the price good value.

The hotel is particularly good for children- they have a daily mini-disco that my daughter loved, and the two girls on the animation team that took the children were fantastic.

In fact all the staff were excellent, and did go out of their way to help accommodate any requests.

Afterwards we took a taxi to Luxor that was uneventful, and a fascinating drive through the desert (expect to pay about 600- 1000LE one way). Permits are required for this journey.

All in we really enjoyed the stay and would definitely return.

Better late than never, my husband and I visited El Madina at the end of Jan this year and were extremely impressed with absolutely everything. It is a small hotel but this made it more special. Eveything and everyone went above and beyond to ensure we enjoyed our stay. I was shocked that is was 4* and not 5*, when I enquired about this they explained that because the hotel is not directly on the beach ( you have a two minute walk!) they would never be able to achieve the the 5 stars.
Some of the little touches made it so special, in the afternoon a chef in full whites comes round with a silver platter with sliced melon, in the evening they do the same with handmade chocolates. I highly rate this hotel and have booked to go back the same week in 2014 with a couple of friends. A little piece of heaven in a beautiful part of the country.

Room Tip: Any room, the hotel is small and everything is top quality. Your only decision willl be top or bottom floor
