Just returned from an amazing two weeks at this hotel and haven’t stopped talking about it since getting back and already looking to return next year – assuming First Choice continue to have flights from Manchester (although been on their website and not looking good at the moment). Before I went I had mixed feelings about going to Egypt in July/August because of the heat and had also had friends who had been to Sharm el Sheikh and been ill so wasn’t sure what to expect – but I needn’t have worried, although temperatures were about 35 degrees, there was a nice breeze round the pool and we were sensible and stayed in the shade during the hottest part of the day, didn’t have ice cold drinks or the air conditioning too cold in the room and we weren’t ill at all.

I also had high expectations based on the reviews on trip advisor and it didn’t fail to live up to them. From arriving at the airport, not having long to wait for luggage as Marsa Alam is only a small airport, about 15 minutes to transfer to the hotel and being met by the Manager with Cocktails it was all a good start. He then escorted everyone to their rooms, luggage turned up a few minutes later and we then went to the restaurant for something to eat – although the restaurant had closed for the evening they provided us with a 3 course meal.

Staff at the hotel were exceptional – nothing was too much trouble, every day you were asked if everything was ok and was there anything else we needed – if you come back from this hotel unhappy you only have yourself to blame because they give you lots of opportunity for feedback. Our room was on the second floor with a pool view and was cleaned every day with the room boy leaving us a towel animal – including a rabbit, turtle, crocodile and one day a monkey hanging from the ceiling ! He also left us two bottles of water every day and if we ran out we could always refill them from the water machine at the pool bar.

Once the staff knew what we were drinking, we didn’t need to ask again – Mohammed around the pool always seemed to time it right bringing us drinks without us having to ask - on the odd occasion I walked to the pool bar he told me to sit back down and he would bring them. Same in the restaurant, no sooner had we walked through the door drinks were on the table. The Chef was always present in the restaurant making sure everyone was happy with the food, and asking whether there was anything else we wanted – one night we asked for chips for the kids and the next night they were there, although to be fair they could have had chips every day at the beach bar. He also came round the pool and beach bar in the afternoon, just when it was getting a bit hot with slices of melon which was so refreshing and the hand-made chocolates he brought round after dinner was a nice touch.

We had no problems getting sunbeds every day, there were plenty to go round and you didn’t have to put your towels out to reserve them which makes a nice change !

There was lots to do throughout the day for both adults and kids (if you wanted to join in). I’m not normally a pool person but I was in there several times a day and even did aqua-aerobics several times – Omar made it fun even though I was useless at it and was a good way to get to know other guests. All the staff took time out to chat and find out a bit more about us and it really made us feel welcome. Ahmed, the Thomson/First Choice Rep was also excellent – every day he made an effort to come and find us round the pool and took time out to speak to all the English Families. The water park right next door to the hotel was great for the kids – so close they could go by themselves and only a 5 minute walk to the beach, the water was so clear you could see the fish on the reef and was great for snorkelling.

We’ve been on several All Inclusive holidays over the last couple of years, but this has to be the best, so relaxing and definitely one to return to.

This was our 2nd visit to the Dar el Medina & it exceeded all our expectations. Once again the staff went out of their way to make sure our stay was a memorable one. From the moment we arrived until the time we departed for the airport we were treated like royalty It is the little extras like the fruit in the afternoon & the chocolates in the evening which set this hotel apart from others. We will definitely be returning.

Room Tip: A pool view is very nice

This is one of four hotels in Coraya bay, a bay on the coast (actually about 40km from Marsa Alam), but near the airport (expect to pay about 80-100LE for the taxi journey- haggle hard). All the hotels seem to be run by the same company. The whole set of hotels seem to be a newly built holiday complex with no local town.

We also visited some of the other towns in the area including Port Ghalib (which was an artificial town, a bit deserted), and went through Marsa Alam (not much to see, only a port).

Good rooms- very clean, the pool area was not too overcrowded and the cocktails were good (they even made me a Pina Colada that was not on the cocktail menu). The house beach was about 10 minutes walk and the house reef that could be accessed by a jetty was pretty and a good place to learn to dive.

Now the little negatives

1. This is the only hotel in the bay not directly on the seafront- none of the rooms therefore have a sea view, and the beach is further away from this hotel when compared with the others

2. The food was average- but given the price good value.

The hotel is particularly good for children- they have a daily mini-disco that my daughter loved, and the two girls on the animation team that took the children were fantastic.

In fact all the staff were excellent, and did go out of their way to help accommodate any requests.

Afterwards we took a taxi to Luxor that was uneventful, and a fascinating drive through the desert (expect to pay about 600- 1000LE one way). Permits are required for this journey.

All in we really enjoyed the stay and would definitely return.

Better late than never, my husband and I visited El Madina at the end of Jan this year and were extremely impressed with absolutely everything. It is a small hotel but this made it more special. Eveything and everyone went above and beyond to ensure we enjoyed our stay. I was shocked that is was 4* and not 5*, when I enquired about this they explained that because the hotel is not directly on the beach ( you have a two minute walk!) they would never be able to achieve the the 5 stars.
Some of the little touches made it so special, in the afternoon a chef in full whites comes round with a silver platter with sliced melon, in the evening they do the same with handmade chocolates. I highly rate this hotel and have booked to go back the same week in 2014 with a couple of friends. A little piece of heaven in a beautiful part of the country.

Room Tip: Any room, the hotel is small and everything is top quality. Your only decision willl be top or bottom floor

From the moment we arrived, the customer service at the Dar El Madina was exceptional. When we arrived the manager showed us to our room and pointed out all the facilities. The restaurant had closed for the evening, we were shown to an outside table and served a 3 course meal. Our room was spotless, good air conditioning, a wet room type shower and free safe. We were on the 3rd floor overlooking the amphitheatre, a good place to watch the sunrise and quite cool in the evenings out on the balcony.

Food is great, if people think it's samey, they must be putting some of everything on their plate every meal. There was fish, meat, pasta + veg option, plus a children's section with even more choice, in the evenings there is also a barbecue and grill outside serving delicious fresh food. There was always a good selection of starters and puddings, but leave room for the home made chocolate the chef brings round to your table after dinner! Drinks are served to your table or you can help yourself to hot drinks. The chef will cater for any dietary requirements or tastes. He heard a child asking for chips and he cooked a plate specially for her.

We always found there were enough sunbeds by the pool, loads of spare at the beach, towels are provided. There is plenty of shade by the sunbeds and at the pool bar, which serves home made pizza, cakes and pastries, ice cream and occasionally fresh popcorn. Drinks are usually served to your sunbed and fresh melon in the afternoons.

The staff are friendly and can't do enough to help you. My husband was ill one day so we had to postpone our booking at the Egyptian restaurant, an hour after I'd phoned reception, 2 waiters appeared with light food for him, they asked how he was every time they saw us after that. Ahmed, our room boy even brought some fresh mint for him to make a drink to settle his stomach. We were even given some filled rolls for our journey home by a member of staff.

I dived with Coraya Divers, the reef is really well looked after with plenty to see within a short distance. They have a great set-up and are really helpful. A bit pricey compared to other places I've dived. Snorkeling is also good, especially early morning.

The entertainment team work really hard, we did some daytime activities but are not really interested in evening shows, so I can't comment there. We did watch the glass walking/sword/bed of nails show which is impressive. There are a good selection of shops around the hotels, Mina the jeweler was my favourite! The shopkeepers are desperate for business and can hassle you a bit, but they'll listen when you say 'no thank you'.

Our rep 'Henry' was excellent, he's genuinely helpful, we had a few great chats with him over a pre-dinner drink.

Please don't be put off visiting Egypt because of the news covering Cairo, we were there when the government was overthrown, if staff hadn't told us about it, we would never had known that anything was amiss in the country. Marsa Alam is so far away from the big cities, you will be safe.

If you're after a quiet holiday where you'll be spoiled rotten, this is the place for you. Look elsewhere if you're a party animal who loves to shop!

Room Tip: There are no bad rooms, I preferred a room at the back as they're not overlooked by people using the pool
