We booked this hostel for its private twin room, despite it being a fully self-catering hostel - something that we have not done before. But what a surprise. The hostel was ideally situated (though sat nav users must make sure you are selecting the correct Newport) and was very clean and comfortable, The volunteer warden, Helen, could not have been more helpful and we enjoyed our short stay immensely. And, though we cooked most nights, the proximity of the Gold Lion pub was a bonus. Fantastic food, live music - and free wifi.
We would definitely stay here again.

Hired the whole venue for Christmas 2013, and it served us all very well. Great communal lounge, good size kitchen (although we had to figure out how to seat 18 very carefully). The place was warm and welcoming, seven bedrooms (4 upstairs, 3 down) meant we could take all ages from 1 to 80 and all retreat to bed quietly. Fantastic star gazing through the skylights upstairs and right in the village. Perfect access to the waterfront too.

Room Tip: Smaller rooms upstairs (2s and 4s), a 4 and 2 x6s upstairs. All good.

It's a youth hostel so expectations should be fairly low, but nevertheless not an uncomfortable place to spend a few nights, especially if you're keen on walking in the day.

Room was warm enough and bed comfy. The kitchen is large and has a good range of equipment. Showers were basic and not aired very well, also radiator wires exposed to water which was a bit concerning. All doors seemed to slam which was a bit annoying.

Generally a relaxed atmosphere with friendly staff and guests. Exceeded expectations.

Hired this on the 'Escape too scheme' and have done this many times in all sorts of locations
7 bedrooms, all bunked
2, 4 and 6 bedded options
GOOD BITS
Lounge was roomy and had sofa's
Kitchen, lots of pots, pans etc
Good location
BAD BITS
The visitors book complained of blocked shower drain and broken bedside lights. On our visit these hadn't been rectified, so the downstairs shower constantly flooded the floor
The rooms had zero charactor, the YHA makes a point of this and this hostel was utiliterian.
No cleaning materials, except diluted down washing up liquid.
For summer stay this would be fine, but feel that as a stand alone hire, care and bit of thought as to the transittion needs to be made.
