We stayed for 7 nights in August/September 2013. Our beachfront bungalow was perfect for us. Swimming from the beach was fantastic. The owners and staff were very welcoming and friendly, taking care of everything we needed. The food was amazing every day. The restaurant decks have great views of the fish in the channel, as well as the fabulous sunsets. The casual music and dancing at night was quite good. The lagoon was calm so we kayaked along the shore in the late afternoons looking at the uninhabited islands, sometimes landing to explore. It is a small, intimate place. We felt like we had it to ourselves a lot of the time.

We stayed at this Relais this August for 3 nights. The location and setting is very pretty and the owners are so friendly and caring! It''s really worth the trip. the bungalows are very nice and clean, furnshed with local amenities and well settled eiither front beach or just over the little inlet-channel...our room was just there and on my opinion, it's position is way better because it's just a few steps away from the cristal clear water where to swim among several fishes!
The food at local restaurant is excellent! This Pension is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the real French Polynesia!

Room Tip: Beach front bungalows are nice and secluded than garden bungalow; I prefer these seconds one because...

We stayed here in July for five days. This was such a unique experience, and well worth the travel off the typical tourist path in French Polynesia. It is not a huge swanky hotel, but an intimate small and lovely place where you can appreciate the beauty of your surroundings and the culture with very few other people around. As others have noted, it is a private island, and we had the island to ourselves for most of the time, with the owner away for a few days. The very pleasant staff made us feel welcome, as if we were family. We stayed in the family bungalow by the channel, as it is the largest room to accommodate us all, including our 4 year old son and 12 year old daughter. IF you are ready to relax, and don't need something to do constantly, it is a very serene and relaxing place to stay. But with kids we had to keep active, so we walked/waded across from this motu to the next, crossing shallow waters with water sox on our feet to protect us from the coral, and finally arrived on the main land of Tikehau, by the airport. Then we rented bicycles there, from Pension Hotu. Then we biked around the main village of Tikehau. We also had a "snack" at the snack bar in town, hot dogs. There is also a little grocery there, where you can pick up some juices and other items, but you will need to carry them back with you. The beach was interesting to explore, there were lava and coral formations, some huge, with coconut palms growing out of them. You are limited to what the resort serves at night, and they did serve raw fish one night, which was very difficult for my six year old to eat! But another night we had freshly caught lobster! The food overall was delicious. The breakfasts were a little scant, more like a continental breakfast with fruit, juice, coffee and cereal, no eggs of any kind. I was usually starving by lunch. The first couple of nights, there was no entertainment, while the owners were out of town, so I was surprised when our last two nights there was singing and some dancing. Loved it! Overall an excellent experience, and Camilia was so sweet and nice, I didn't want to leave. Although we didn't speak French and they spoke very little English, we got by with our French/English dictionary, which I recommend bringing. Hopefully we will return some day! One suggestion, request a bottle of water at lunch and use during the afternoon, since when we were there, the kitchen was closed from lunch until dinner at 7:00PM, and you need to stay hydrated in that environment. The tap water is okay to drink, but we stayed with the bottled.

Room Tip: If there are just two travelers, recommend requesting a beach front room, the beach is beautiful the...

Stayed July, 2011 but just getting to our review. Can't imagine much has changed there.

Absolutely amazing! The Relais is on a motu separate from the main town but still easy to get to. We were picked up at the small airport and transported by boat to our pension where we were greeted by the owners and staff dockside. We had the place to ourselves the first night, a lovey well appointed tiki cabin on the beach facing the crystal clear blue waters. We truly felt like we had our own private island. The staff and hosts (who were all truly lovely and absolutely wonderful) live at the pension and are available at a moments notice but really keep out of the way so you don't know they are there. Any of the tiki cabins would be wonderful, but the ones beachfront are the best due to privacy and view.

The food is delicious and every night we were treated to a short fun traditional ukelele and dance performance by the locals. We went with the breakfast and dinner meal package when we made our reservations which is the minimum we would advise as we did not find options for dining in town. There is a great little store on the main motu where we bought drinks and a few minor supplies for lunch. We did end up buying lunch subsequent days at the pension.

The owners will give you a free lift into town via their boat if they are going, otherwise it's a short crossing over two small motus and fairly shallow waterways in between. Dive with Alex, the owners can set you up. Rent bikes and ride around town, stop at the end of town and look over at beautiful Billabong Island.

We would stay here again and again and will definitely come back on our next trip. Within 4 days we felt like we had been there two weeks. Beyond relaxing!

We stayed at this hotel at the end of October 2012. What a great place. Beautiful location with crystal clear water. We had a bungalow on the channel side, which I think might be better than the beach. Great balcony right over the water where fish and sharks swim by all day. The room was very comfortable even without AC. The food was excellent. But the staff and owners were incredible. So welcoming. Easy to work with and provided lots of information. We will be back.

We started our 4 atoll vacation at this family pension and it turned out to be the perfect place to recover from the long trip. The owner Monique who speaks fluent English and her husband Jean Claude were very solicitous for our well being. Her lovely all female staff made us feel at home immediately. Florette, Lorna, Esther, Tuahiti, and Camelia were very attentive to our needs and in the evenings they entertained us with songs and dancing. We especially enjoyed watching the reef fish from the outdoor restaurant and from the deck of our fare. Snorkeling in the channel (hoa) and off the beach was pleasant and easy and offered a wide variety of beautiful fish. The black tip reef sharks seem to be harmless and they are a lot of fun to watch.
The beautiful setting, excellent food, handsome and comfortable bungalows, and the great staff make Royal Tikehau the perfect vacation spot.

Room Tip: Cabins on the hoa (small channel) recommended for fish lovers. The breeze also kept the temperature...
