Shortly after settling into our overwater bungalow to celebrate our 10-year anniversary, we noticed water leaking and what appeared to be feces dropping from under the walkway nearby our room. We asked the staff working on the issue what was the source. They said it was raw sewage leaking from the pipes between the rooms and the resort island. They said that as the sewage flows from the rooms to the island via the pipes, pumps that move the sewage sometimes break and this leads to raw sewage spilling into the lagoon. Since we were swimming in the water nearby, we got out of the water immediately and called the front desk to discuss our strong concerns about this issue. They offered to move us to another room since they said the issue would likely persist for at least 3 days while they waited for parts to repair the plumbing. We accepted this offer and moved us to another room on the opposite side of the resort.
Shortly after arriving in the new overwater bungalow we saw the exact same issue nearby our new room. This time we spoke with the property management. We had multiple conversations and 2 meetings with resort management during our stay. The discussions we had with management over the course of our stay consumed hours of our vacation time that we would rather have spent relaxing at the resort rather than worrying about bacterial contamination...Shortly after settling into our overwater bungalow to celebrate our 10-year anniversary, we noticed water leaking and what appeared to be feces dropping from under the walkway nearby our room. The resort management said that they test the water monthly and the results are always within acceptable bacterial ranges, but they would not tell me location of the water samples. I am fairly certain that if they would have tested the water directly under the sewage spilling into the lagoon, the bacterial results would not likely have been within acceptable ranges. The photo I posted is the location from which the sewage leaks when the pumps break. If you book a room at this property, I suggest keeping an eye out for sewage leaking from this area in case you are swimming nearby it.
As other past guests posted in some of the other reviews, this is an old property that is in need of a complete upgrade. The rooms are dated, and, among other issues, there were also termites in both of our rooms. We tried to move to the St Regis, but it was sold out.
On a positive note, Bora Bora is an amazing island. It is truly paradise and one of the best beach vacation locations in the world. So, we will return to Bora Bora but never to Le Meridien in its current condition.More
