Sofitel Bora Bora Marara Beach Resort
Ranked #12 of 17 Hotels in Bora Bora
Reviewed March 6, 2010

When you land in Bora Bora be prepared to be met by a charming hostess who will take care of everything until you board the Sofitel boat to take you to the hotel. After a 30-minute pleasant ride across the eastern part of the lagoon - a good way to see the main island - we discovered our over-water bungalow. A large bedroom, a modern bathroom with all amenities, all of discreet luxury of good taste. An outside terrace with a spectacular view over the lagoon, an inside terrace with a ladder to dip directly into the lagoon. The pool and the beach are correct but you hardly need them. Our stay was starting like a fairy tale.

Things started to deteriorate during dinner time as we were forced to move from the terrace of the restaurant to the inside when the wind started to pick-up real strength. The staff looked a bit worried - surely thinking of their own houses - but all kept on going smoothly. Food and wine were OK but nothing special if not that it is expensive as everywhere else in French Polynesia. During the night the wind continued to reinforce and we had some tiny scraps falling from the pandanus roof.

In the morning it was clear that cyclone Oli was heading directly to Bora Bora and we were evacuated to the nearby Novotel built in concrete - a wise decision. Meanwhile airports in Bora Bora and Papeete were closed and planes sent to Marquesas islands for safety. When Air Tahiti resumed its activity we were flown to Papeete. During all this period of time the staff did its utmost to make our life bearable and supplied us with bottled water, sandwiches, even some kind of breakfast and so on. The sore point is that, when checking-out, Sofitel tried to charge us for all that. We challenged these charges and eventually they were dropped to our complete satisfaction.

Sofitel will recover from cyclone Oli and will remain a very attractive place to stay in Bora Bora, specially if you are in the over-water bungalows. No doubt that their staff will remain as friendly, efficient and attentive as we have experienced during our stay. In spite of Oli we keep a good memory of our stay.

The overwater bungalows at Sofitel are amazing. The staff is very attentive and the grounds are beautiful. Unfortunately, we were hit by Cyclone Oli and had to be evacuated to a nearby hotel. We really missed our over water bungalow. Throughout the storm, the staff was more than kind and went the extra mile to accomodate requests we had. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone. The hotel sustained minimal damage and should be just as beautiful as it was before Oli. I only hope we can revisit in the future.

We have spent 10 days at the Sofitel Bora Bora Motu Private Island, and it was the best time.Wild beauty,Incredible, breathtaking views to the Lagoon and the best view to Otemanu mountain all around the Bora Bora, deep blue clear water, the best sealife i have ever seen. Our garden beach bungalow with mountain and lagoon view was perfect. The most impressive was swimming in the Coral Garden behind the Motu, shark/ray feeding tour and jeep safari tour, what I would highly recomend to take.
I miss Bora Bora and my Otemanu ,I dream to come back and I would choose this hotel again, undoubtely. Its a once lifetime experience and it worth to see.
Especial thanks to all the staff ,who was frendly, helpful and kind.

Number 64, our overwater bungalow was beautiful, superb shower, his and hers sinks, giant bed with a spectacular view of the lagoon, fridge, tea and coffee making facilites and a glass area in the floor to watch the fish.
Now for the down side, the restaurant was very expensive at approx £120 for meal for two, we stayed 4 nights, so that was nearly £500.
Also the internet was very expensive at £7 for 30 minutes and was slow and the computer kept crashing.
The weather in early January is very humid and every day there were rain showers, the hotel provide large umbrellas to enable you to walk around the grounds and to the nearby supermarket.

This OV bungalows, the private motu and its beaches are amazing and very quiet and private.

We read many reviews on Tripadvisor and planned for months before our trip. Who would have thought that paradise at $500 a night falls short? We never thought we could complain about anything. After all, we are on vacation and very layed back BUT be aware that all the negative reviews you read online are accurate.

Be aware that the rooms are not very well cleaned and that some amunities don't function well or are broken, which you shouldn't expect when you pay top dollars. You also have to call over and over again (up to 10 times once!) to reach the reception desk by phone. Very annoying.

This hotel could be perfect only if they improved their staff and food. The staff looks and acts annoyed and bothered and they are very, very slow.

Don't opt for the breakfast/dinner plan. The food at the restaurant and at the bar is very average. Eat instead at La Bounty (a 3 minute walk from the hotel) and buy your own groceries at the Tiare market (a short 5 min walk).

Don't miss the coral garden for amazing snorkeling (we went back day after day) on the other side of the island. It's accessible by free kayak. Also not to miss: their matai cocktail. The one made on the motu is made with frozen vanilla yogurt, not the one at Marara.

We would not recommend this hotel on Bora Bora. The Sofitel in Moorea was perfect but not the Sofitel Motu in Bora Bora. What a disappointment!

Although the hotel looked nice from the outside and the personnel was kind and genuinely concerned about their clients, the overall impression is of a cheap hotel sold at Luxury price.
Food was awful with an International menu made of scraps from the day before (esp. salads and breakfast).
I had a SPA treatment sold as 'The Tahitian Bath' (or something like that) and all I had for 150€ was a bath in a Jacuzzi with some snacks taken directly from the morning's breakfast.
The dance show was pathetic.

I highly recommend the over-water bungalo. The staff is fantastic and responsive to your needs. Take the time to rent one of their electric cars and drive around the island...it'll take you less than an hour and the views are beyond wonderful.
