“What a disappointing so-called 4 star "resort"”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 6, 2012

Just returned from a 5 night stay at this resort. We had booked an overwater bungalow on the main island and although we had a good view from our bungalow, the rest of the resort was a complete disappointment. Our first reaction when we got off the boat from the airport was how depressing and sad the resort looked. The restaurant area was so uninviting and everything about the resort was in need of some major renovation. We contacted our travel agent and they were able to arrange for us to have our last 2 nights on the private island in an overwater bungalow. The bungalow on the private island was no better nor did it have a better view, but the overall atmosphere was a huge improvement. The food and menu at the main island and the private island were much the same. We enjoyed our meals and they were always nicely presented. We have used Sofitel Hotels in the past and have always found them to be of a very high standard and we cannot understand why Sofitel would put its name to this resort. We spent 4 days at the Sofitel Moorea prior to staying here and it was a far better property than the one at Bora Bora.

The Sofitel Bora Bora Marara beach resort has been renovated in 2008 and we will do a full refreshing in 2013 with a great design in all rooms. The Sofitel Bora Bora Private island who just won the HM award in Sydney las week, as the best resort in South Pacific ,will also be refreshed in 2013.
Thank you for comment regarding our food quality.
As you can see Sofitel is always willing to invest and to upgrade its own properties to fully deliver the luxury brand standard to reach or to exceed all your expectations.

We stayed here in one leg of our four stop Polynesian honeymoon. And I can only describe it as "bad"! The bungalow smelled of mold and our king bed was 2 twins pushed together! Decor was old and beat up. They said Hurricane beat up the place and it needs to be redone but I haven't heard of a hurricane hitting there in five years or so! Our last day we had NO WATER! The staff was the only enjoyable asset to the hotel, they were courteous & accomodating! Food was lacking in quality and variety!! If not for the staff I would say this place was a dump!

Thank you for taking time to share with you your stay at Sofitel Marara. I really would like to start by thanking you for your great comments regarding our staffs and their servivce and kindness. They are all really dedicated to guest service and you noticed it.
The good news is that we prepare a full refreshment of the resort that should be completed by end of 2013. The last one have been done in 2008.
When the weather is not that good it does not help to enjoy the whole atmosphere as it should be.
Your comments are important for us and I can ensure you of our willing to provide/exceed the service that all guest must expect from a Sofitel resort.

Ive been to a couple of places and never bothered to write reviews but the Sofitel in Bora Bora is worth the time to write a review. Me and my boyfriend are from New York so the traveling time was long and exhausting however upon our arrival to bora bora Sofitel hotel, we knew the travel was well worth it. While people usually take taxi's to hotels we took a boat ride to the hotel which was really nice. As we get to Sofitel hotel we're greeted at the dock with some music and the manager Jean Louis, whom was so welcoming. He made sure to keep us laughing and any questions we had he did his best to answer them. While our rooms were being prepared he sat there and told us of all the exciting things to do and what to look forward to on our stay there. I have to say Jean Louis made our stay at the Sofitel comfortable, whether you need new towels or just a question answered, room service was great. We had all inclusive which saved us some money however, drinks aren't included, we had to pay for water or soda. Which was our only disappointment but we couldn't complain with already being on this beautiful island.

Room Tip: Bungalow rooms are so far the best rooms

It was a unique honeymoon experience. The "voyage" of a lifetime. We stayed for four nights at the Sofitel Bora Bora "Motu" Private Island. ( after a week at Fakarava, superbe natural diving spot). Everything was incredibly beautiful, personalized, amazing, tasting, colourful, joyful, authentic.. never overdone... from the moment of the private boat pick-up at the airport ( on an island facing Bora Bora) by the friendly Sofitel team, the crossing of the lagoon under an incredibly starry night ( you'll have it almost all the time..) .. to the warm welcome upon arrival .. by Didier Lamotte, the GM and its team .. no kitsch, no touristic fuzz, no overdoing, but true discreet caring .. in order to make our stay unique .. make us feel free and at home from the first moment on.

Room Tip: If your are on a honeymoon or romantic trip .. choose the Sofitel Bora Bora Motu "Private Islan...

Chose a overwater Bungalow but... though "on water" it faced the other Bungalows instead of the beautiful bay; bad design of the rooms as this is the case for about 2/3 the Bungalows; allocated a type of room I did not book and then it was very difficult to obtain what was paid for in advance; extremely expensive for what it offers plus they have the nerve to charge the unchargable (example, in a 50 USD burger you still have to ask and pay extra 10 USD for the fries; 10 USD for a 5m Boat ride to the small island in front belonging to the same Hotel!); the staff was very pleasant (most all women the "Mommy type") but the "Master of Cerimonies" was a Fellini Movie-type of man, very loud and "populist" in his style, activities belonging more in a highway 66 Motel than a honeymoon resort in BoraBora!!!!
In short, terrible value for money

Room Tip: Ask for the few overwater bungalows that face the waters... and not the other Bungalows! Choose Int...

Dear Guest
Thank you for all your comments. i went through all very carefully. You are right, our ambassadors are very pleasant, available and all service oriented under the exemplarity of all the management team. Thank you highlighting this important point.
Just a short note regarding our price , humburger is 1.950 Cfp so around 25 USD.
Regarding the boat to go to the private island we offer to our Sofitel Marara guest the opprtunity to get to our Sofitel private island (10 USD fees round way and restaurant booking). This is a privilege as No one else is allowed to get in Bora bOra as this island is 100% private.
Sometime the Sofitel private island is fully booked, so to respect the exclusivity and the privacy of our resident guests satying there we propose an alternative solution for our guest staying at Sofitel Marara to go on another island close to the hotel. I hope this will help all people willing to have information from Sofitel in Bora Bora.
Again thank you for your stay with us during your French Polynesian trip.

i love staying at the private island. the service excellent. the spa superb (especially virginie). the beach boys (men) happy, caring and sooo helpful (especially vatae). the food excellent. the coral beautiful. price was very reasonable. the private island was much better than any other islands "private" accomodation from the many we saw in the area. more exclusive and private. the main island resort i was not impressed with and couldnt wait to return to the private island. we stayed for 7 nights and wanted to stay for more. it was the most relaxing and most peaceful and most romantic holiday ever. we will be back

Room Tip: get the package with breakfast & dinner because it is worth it and you have the choice of privat...

From the moment we arrived at the Sofitel my wife and I knew that this was going to be a great stay. The warm welcome and personal greeting from the manager Jean Louis set the tone for the rest of our stay at this magical place. The check-in process was pain-free and we were quickly shown to our king size over water bungalow. The view out into the sparkling blue waters more than made up for the lack of hot water but when the temperature does not drop below 24C this is not an issue at all. The romantic dinner was a great experience and the colours at sunset unbelievable - the different shades of blue against the orange/yellow/pink of the setting sun - wow.
The eco tour was also a fantastic day out with close encounters with stingrays and sharks and the captain and Vincent the videographer made the trip an enjoyable one and were quite funny too.
The dinners were great and we were fortunate enough to see the local groups performing in a competition (mini heiva). It was an energetic, hip swaying, rumpshaking, frenetic drumming show and it was spectacular!
Check out time came all too soon and we were very sad to leave but I suppose all good things have to come to an end. The forlorn sound of the sea conch being blown matched the sadness we felt as our boat slipped away from the dock and returned us to real life.
Be assured we'll be back. Mauruuru Sofitel Bora Bora, mauruuru!

Thank you for your comments regarding Jean Louis, our romatic diners, and your arrival experience. I am extremely happy you could join our "mini Heiva, that has been organized 4 consecutive days on the "la terrace" of Latitude 16 restaurant, it was a really great event in Bora Bora at Sofitel.
Our Eco tour is such a experience that i really recommand all our guests, this is the best way to discover the lagoon and also the ocean with a magnifique team on board.
I hope to have the pleasure to have you as our special host again soon!
there is place you leave in and place who never leave you.........we are one of those!
