“Best value for budget travelers!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 11, 2012

Sunset Hill Lodge is the best value in Bora Bora if you are on a budget travel. It is located in Vaitape village( not along the Matira Beach), but it is just 5 min's walk to the supermarket and not far away to all other attractions if you drive a car or just ride a bike. I stayed in Bungalow Jardin #2. It is just like home with a nice small garden where I can sit outside to eat, and a lovely French-Polynesia-style outdoor shower room. Also I cooked by myself everyday thanks to the full equipment of all necessary kitchen facilities. The owner Gerard is really great! He lent me his bike and kayak for free and told me how to enjoy the real Bora Bora by myself in a money-saving way. I did a lot of outdoor exercises, such as riding a bike around the whole island, going kayaking on the lagoon, swiming, climbing the mountain where I could see a beautiful view of Bora Bora, etc. By the way, I saw beautiful stars at night! I really enjoyed my stay in Sunset Hill Lodge, living like a local people, quite different from those stay in a luxury hotel. Last, thanks again to Gerard. I am quiet honored to be your first Chinese guest:)

Sunset Hill Lodge stands out from any other hotel, pension or accomodation in Bora Bora by providing great value for money, with a genuine smile. The bungalow was really a small house, with a fully equiped kitchen, microwave, gas range and oven and large fridge. 2 queen size bed with view on the lagoon from the one above.

Very conveniently located in Vaitape, walking distance from about anything.

Great for families, young couples, budget travellers or seasoned travellers who are sick of getting bad service while paying $1000 per night.

Great for divers as well since Sunset Hill Lodge is a 3mn walk from Topdive-Bathys, the best and most comprehensive diving center in Polynesia.

Best of all, Gerard's hospitality as mentionned by so many other reviewers. He is one of those people who genuinely care about others. 5 star hotels have so much to learn from him!!

Thanks Gerard.
Being in this accomodation was the best choice to come to Bora Bora.
Situated in Vaitape a bit uphill from the main road, aprox. 1 km away from the port and downtown.
We stayed in the stilts bungalow, where you can enjoy an incredible view of both, mountain and lagoon. We had breakfast every morning in the terrace, smelling jasmin and enjoying the delicious local fruits. The bungalow is really beutiful furnished and well climatized, you don't need mosquito net if you keep the door closed. The bungalow is sorrounded by windows, so you don't miss the view any time. You can even watch the geko dance every night if you switch the light on inside and they crawl close to the windows hunting their food. It was funny.
We rented bikes and kayaks to make excursion on the advice of Gerard, who show us the best spots of the island and the motus. He brought us and then picked up with his land rover, carrying the kayaks to the best start points.
The kitchen is perfect if you like to cook, otherwise you will find some good restaurants nearby. Specially Mai kai, not the cheapest, but high quality and excellent taste.
If you are looking for a holiday experience made by yourself, don't hesitate to book Sunset Hill Lodge and avoid resorts.
Again, thanks Gerard

First, the place was an outstanding value, particularly for Bora Bora. You have a full kitchen with frig, porch, private bath, even little amenities like soap and a towel which most places in this price range don't provide. Second, it's a lovely peaceful setting, with gardens and a babbling brook running through it. Last but not least, Gerard was an amazing host. Very friendly and knowledgeable, arranged a great tour for me, will pick you up from the port or airport at no charge, even offered to take me to a restaurant one night a few miles away. When I left, the boat I was leaving on was delayed all day, and several hours later, he came to me with some information about it. Thanks for a great stay Gerard! I would have stayed longer but I was locked into my dates. Highly recommended!

very good location in Vaitape, close to shops and restaurants. Gerard, the owner, is very helpful and knowledgeable about the area, organizing all the tours and trips for you. He took us to the beach on the first day where we spent several hours swimming and relaxing. Our apartment was nice with all the facilities. Lovely to have hot water showers ( you don't get this on all islands ) ! Thank you very much Gerard. Hoping to be able to return one day.. Leena and Farouk

Gerard offers 3 very lovely and functional Appartements/Bungalows. We stayed in the romantic stilt bungalow and enjoyed the beautiful view of the lagoone and the imposent mountain! The kitchen, bathroom and the ac worked very well and the nice materials from the furnitures creats a cosy atmosphere. Eating breakfast at the balcony is just great! Gerard gave us all the necessary informations and organised everything we asked for. He gave us a ride for free to several places and there is also a possibility to rent bikes. If you don't want to stay in an over priced over water bungalow this is the place to be but keep in mind that it's not at the beachfront. We warmly recommend this fantastic place and will miss the tasty Hot bananas from Gerard.

A very nice and clean place, just a few minutes ride from Vaitape. Bernard is a fantastic host, and always very helpful! Whatever you need, he will be able to help you. Rooms are very cozy and have everything you need. I was a bit worried about not having AC, but sleeping in the bedroom on top of the bungalow was no problem at all. It has good ventilation and does not get to warm. I strongly recommend renting kayaks from Bernard and make a full day trip around the island of Motu Toopua, it is a fantastic trip. He also have nice bikes for rent, just be ware of the traffic! We would love to come back here.
