“Hidden Gem - Good Value”
Reviewed September 26, 2011

We were trying to squeeze in a quick trip to see Denali via flight-seeing from Talkeetna within a longer AK trip that focused on the Kenai, so we only stayed here two quick nights. We stayed on the ground floor of the main lodge and loved the wrap-around porch and fantastic views of the Susitna overflow area in the early fall (see photo). (Warning - if it is wet, be careful walking in the overflow area as it can be VERY muddy.) Also, while we did not have any issues, the ground floor room in the main lodge opens directly out into a common area that has a TV, breakfast area and reception which could have been a bit noisy if it had been used more. (Fortunately, Monday night football is over at a very early hour in AK!)

We would love to come back to Talkeetna and do one of the float trips down the river and see more of the area. We would definitely stay at Susitna River Lodge on a return trip.

Room Tip: Would not stay in the main lodge with children - stay in one of the cabins. Ground floor main lodge...

The owners, Howard & Darlene Hunter, are Great People and truly appreciate their guests. Rooms provided were Great. They were Spacious, Clean & Quiet. The staff is very Cordial...
They are always there for information or conversation, if you want...
Otherwise you can enjoy your visit in complete solitude.... Your choice. This is a Great place to stay while in Talkeetna. I greatly enjoyed my visit and If I ever have the opportunity to re-visit the area, the Susitna River Lodge is where I plan to call home.

We are a family of 4 -- with 2 kids one 2.5 yrs and .5 yr old. The space and loft style cabins were perfect to put the kids upstairs and still have the evening to enjoy the scenic view overlooking the Susitna River overflow. It is within walking distance to downtown Talkeetna (10 minute walk) & a great view of McKinley there. The host family is genuinely nice -- available if you need something, but yet not interfering with the quite, remote experience. We would go back again.

Directly across the street (.5 mile) is a great town play ground) -- far enough away, but close enough for convenience.

This is our second year to Talkeetna and was happy to find this location on our second trip, since we missed it last year. Unless you are into the fancy lodges, which we are not, you will not find a better place to stay. Darlene, the owner was exceptional with her kindness and very hard work. Her husband, Howard, was out of town during our visit so Darlene was really busy but always cheerful and helpful. We were fortunate to get a cabin here as walk- ins as they are really booked most of the time. They also have some really great suites.

My brother, son and I were lucky enough to stay in Cabin 4 during our trip to Talkeetna. The setting couldn't be nicer. The grounds and cabin were spotless and the staff helpful. Being at the end of the property meant the only sounds other than birds were the planes overhead (and everywhere in Talkeetna has planes overhead during the day). Never heard the train except one night. Sleeping loft was great for my son and I with my brother downstairs.

Room Tip: Book early and try to get Cabin 4 if you are family traveling.

We traveled from Palmer to Talkeetna, stopping on the way several times taking pictures of the beautiful Alaskan landscape, with the Alaskan Range being the highlight photo opportunity. It was so nice to reach our lodging, the place sits next to the river which you can walk out on to the sand bars and take more pictures of partially clouded in Mount McKinley. After a very hard day of sightseeing, in which we did a glacier tour in Palmer and air plane ride that included a glacier landing, we were so tired it was nice to sleep on a comfortable bed. We had a room in which our daughter had the loft bed and we had the bed downstairs, we fired up the fake wood stove which cast shadows in the dark. The unit has kitchenette and there was plenty of room. In the morning we continental breakfast with homemade muffins that were yummy.

Room Tip: As always, I choose the upper floor rooms
