This was our son's favorite excursion on our recent cruise-land tour of Alaska. After reading the negative reviews, we were concerned, but we quickly discovered that those negative reviews were unjust. The owners were friendly but real; let's face it, they've chosen to live in a remote area of Alaska, so they aren't gushing with fake customer-service. The dogs were quiet when we arrived but as soon as we exited the van and approached the ATV, they were giddy with anticipation. These are powerful sled dogs, so transporting them to the ATV amongst the other chained dogs is a bit different from walking an accessory dog through Central Park. They are walked on their hind legs to maintain control & keep them from pulling, but they were yipping in excitement! The dogs knew the route well, and while the vehicle we were in was motorized, those dogs were definitely keeping the line taut as they charged ahead. (Think of Cesar Milan exercising his dogs on skates; his wheels are doing a good portion of the work but the dogs are simultaneously getting good exercise.)
We enjoyed Jerry's discussion of the race itself. Unfortunately for us, there were no puppies yet but we got to spend time with our pulling team after the ride. Spot, in particular, gave and received lots of love. Luckily for us, our package included lunch and it was without a doubt one of the best meals of the trip! My husband had the halibut burger, our son had the shrimp rice bowl, I had the homemade hummus platter and every bite was delicious. We highly recommend both the tour and the meal.

We want to thank you Jerry, for helping us set up our fishing trip in July 2013. It was a trip of a lifetime! We really enjoyed all you did for us. Our fishing was awesome! Your guys taught us how to fly fish and a few tricks on river fishing. Your wife cooked our catch for us at your restaurant. It was the best meal that we had in Alaska! You even took us to your house to get me dry socks. Thank you for making our trip so memorable! This is a MUST do, even if you are not into fishing. This was great for beginners, males and females alike can do this adventure. Highly recommended.

I wanted to dogsled, but of course no snow, but the motorised vehicle was fine, i know the dogs are not pulling it, but they certainly have to run (even to keep out of the way) and they knew the way to go. We had Gerry's wife telling us all about the race, and the preparation she does for meals for the dogs and Gerry. I thought we would get fluffy Huskies but after the explanations we found out that sled dogs are different. They race. The place is basic, but the dogs are clean, and other kennels we later saw are all on the same principle. The dogs are held on to to get them on the leads but they are raring to go, the others are making a din to be picked! We loved playing with the puppies, all the dogs are all so friendly even when they had done the run. We were 15 people so divided up to into three runs. Don't expect posh, it is a living kennels. I loved it, came away smelly and muddy!. Hand wipes would have been welcome or a wash sink.

Daughter wanted to do two Dogsled excursions, both a kennel visit with puppies and a helicopter ride to dogsled on snow. We only did the first one this trip but enjoyed it very much. There were about 12 people on our trip. Gerry had a very dry wit but my Husband was cracking up. Gerry totally got me with one of his jokes. Daughter absolutely loved the puppy petting. It seemed very much like they were letting us into the "backstage" where they live and prepare for races rather than a fancier place with bleachers and painted dog kennels. They were totally willing to answer any questions we had. It was well worth the money for us and we bought a T-shirt back at the cafe/office of the kennel.

We were very satisfied with our experience. Jerry Sousa is clearly more comfortable with animals than with people, But once you understand that, you are getting a very real experience with a an actual Iditerod racer where he lives, with his dogs. And that's what we wanted. It's not a Disney experience in any way, shape or form. It's not pretty - it is very real. The dogs are scrawny and bred to run. They aren't cute like you want them to be or certainly like you expect them to be.

We learned so much, asked whatever questions we wanted and Jerry took the time we needed to understand. In fact, our tour ran much longer than expected. There were only six people on our excursion and one of them was a young child who started crying at some point. Jerry asked one of his parents to take him outside. You know what - he said he couldn't focus on what he had to say and I know I couldn't focus on what he was saying. He wasn't apologetic about asking for the child to be taken out, but the rest of us certainly appreciated it.

We saw videos of other racers who did programs with much larger groups who seemed like they were more personable but I doubt those groups got all of their questions answered to everyone's satisfaction. We were happy and would recommend Sundog Kennels to anyone who wants an authentic experience.
