“Only one major drawback”
Reviewed August 19, 2012

The drawback is the shower - it's one of those horribly small ones that has the door where one of the corners of the shower would be. So the shower ends up being a cramped almost triangle shape.

Other than that, it was a good size, had a full kitchen, bed was comfy, loads of Sky TV channels (all basic Sky channels plus multiple movies and sports channels). Also a small balcony type of area which would be nice to sit outside in summer (and had an ashtray for the smokers) which has a bit of a view of a parkland area.

Location is on the main road at the north end of town, close to a supermarket and loads of takeaway places and basic restaurants.

The room was looking a bit dated in terms of decor, but not run down, everything worked. Wasn't the cheapest place in town but the overall facilities of the room were enough to justify the price.

Although we only stayed for one night we were made very welcome, the owner was very friendly and helpful with questions that we had about Timaru. The rooms were very clean and tidy, the large double bed was comfortable and the bathroom was extreemly clean. Being situated on SH1, the off road parking was very convenient and the vehicles were parked infront of the units. Its only a small detail, but when we arrived we were given the choise of trim or regular milk, this was appreciated. Should we need to have a stopover in Timaru again, we would not hesitate to use Parklands ..

Room Tip: Try and get a unit away from the road.

I made a booking and said that I would be here about 3ish, but perhaps later. When I arrived after 5, Debbie had turned the heater and the lights on in the unit. It was very welcoming. This sounds quite silly, but several other motel owners around the South Island have not done this for me, and so their rooms were quite cold for a while. Can't tell you how nice it was to have a nice warm room when I arrived.

My room was very neat and tidy, as well as being quite large. Spa bath that I didn't use! All and all, just great.

One night stay off the Internet.
The room was fine, clean and with separate kitchen & bathroom, well equipped. Heat pump made by Pratt & Whitney, bit noisy? Comfy bed.
Was well briefed by the receptionist on my room. She gave me some hints for a good meal nearby, and was very helpful.
The motel is on SH #1 so there is traffic noise but nothing earplugs don't deter.

Stayed one night in an apartment. The bedrooms were a little cramped but comfortable. The bathroom was large and equipped with a spa bath. Not bad for one night with free Internet for 30 minutes. Needs a refurb.

My husband and I booked this motel for a one-night stopover, it did not disppoint. Our unit (#13) happened to be one of the renovated ones with a king-size bed (rarely seen on our 7-week trip in 12 places in NZ). I didn't want to get up in the morning it was so comfy! The huge, renovated bathroom had a spa bath and separate shower and a security, wall-mounted hair-dryer. Lots of good-quality body washes and shampoo in huge dispensers (with large lettering one can read in the shower without needing one's glasses!).The kitchen had fridge, both a microwave oven as well as a 3-hob stove and oven (not many ovens in NZ motels we've noticed!). Plenty of utensils and crockery, dishes and counter/cupboard space. Eco-friendly with their recycling (3 kinds!), towels are nevertheless changed every day I was told. New TV with 50+ Sky channels and 30-minute free Internet for our 1 night stay.
The only things I would comment on is no air-conditioning; this did not bother us as it was a cool day/night, but don't know how that would fare on a hot night. Might not be a problem as it is on a bit of a hill with two windows on the back (kitchen and bathroom) and window and patio door in front, for through air circulation.
For the comfort of the bed alone and a good night's sleep, I would come back, but also the kitchen and bathroom were both above-average and they deserve extra points for that.

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated room, as I don't believe all of them are at this stage. Unit 13 is!!!

Parklands Motor Lodge is located on the main road into Timaru (like most motels here) and as such could be potentially noisy. We stayed for a week in January 2012 and found the road noise definitely reduced at night. We had a back unit, number 10, which had slightly dated decor but this was more than compensated for by the friendliness of the staff and the exceptional cleanliness of the room. I gather from the staff that the rooms are gradually being updated. The bed was comfortable and the room was serviced daily. The kitchen had a good sized fridge as well as ground coffee, tea and biscuits which were replenished daily. There also is a helpful set of brochures in the room outlining attractions to go to. The room had Sky TV, although the TV set was a little small for the room, but adequate. Wireless internet is available too but costs extra; useful for computer users but a little cumbersome for smartphone users as far as login and passwords are concerned. The motel is a short ten minute walk from the Timaru town centre, but there are shops and restaurants close by. We would stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room back from the road.
