“Nice chalet”
Reviewed August 24, 2009

Experiencing the cold and disinterested reception staff was a recurring theme during our stay. An upstairs room is a must as indeed heavy steps above come through, along with any loud conversation. The rooms were clean and comfortable, the bar is a blast and we will visit again.

Lovely chalet syle hotel, very comfortable and good choice of food. Stayed 2 nights as base for doing the Tongariro Crossing. Staff couldn't have been more helpful - arranging the bus transfers for us and a packed lunch for the trip, plus having a continental breakfast delivered to our room so we could eat before the 7.20am start. Liked having the choice of eating in the bar or the restauarant too. Enjoyed our pizza in the bar on out first night and the food in the restauarant on our second. Down-side was that the service in the restaurant was not great - wine and starter took a while to arrive and our plates were taken away before the bread got to us. The waitress seemed to be under a bit of pressure - it was a holiday, there was a BBQ going on outside and there seemed to be only one other person serving in the restaurant. And we got charged the usual NZ 15% holiday service surcharge for it! Still, a lovely hotel and a great place to recover from the Crossing. Lovely sunset on first night and great access to Tongariro National Park on our way to Taupo.

Stayed here for a few nights early November 2008. This lodge is in a great location and has great ambiance. Although the mountain and ski field is subject to poor weather, the skiing is magnificent at Turoa when the weather is good.
Had breakfast at the Matterhorn Restaurant and Bar one morning, which was very average - I would recommend going next door to the Fat Pigeon instead where they had great coffee (further review on this).
Back at the lodge, downstairs in the Powder Keg Bar, the ribs were unbelievable, along with a great ambiance.

We spent the weekend at this pleasant resort and had a comfortable stay. It is very handy to the ski fields but a good walk to the township. The beds were very comfortable with a great shower and spa bath. The hot pool was relaxing and clean. we ate some meals in the hotel and they were delicious.

The hotel is certainly lovely, and very warm but we experieced a few problems while staying here.

When we turned on our spa bath, a blob of hair came flying out into the water. We also checked out the hot pool for the hotel and noticed a few couples getting very frisky - perhaps there needs to be a camera installed.

Felt it was a little overpriced for what we got - especially when the drying cupboard barely works and the first thing you want the next day is dry clothing on the mountain.

I also think the 'high quality' hotel feel is lost with the Powderkeg beneath - we all know it can get very rough at this bar.

Probably wouldn't stay again, but do not regret staying here at all.

This is a cosy chateau with wooden interior and self opening doors which were very helpful for my Mum as she had an accident on the hill and was on crutches.
The staff were pretty average, but the homeliness and comfort of the rooms made up for it.
Also, the adjoining bar and restaurant were fantastic, 'the grill' breakfast is just the best!

  • Liked — The rooms were very inviting and homely
  • Disliked — The staff didnt seem like the guests were the most important thing.

Traditional type skilodge, large rooms, drying room not so effective. Staff were not overly warm and friendly. Good location but the highlight is the restaurant and bar. Great food, good service. Recommended, but the floors creak whenever someone is walking above you so request a top floor room if that bothers you. Need to upgrade the televisions!

All televisions have been upgraded to LCD flat screens. The drying room is great for ski equipment and rain coats. We have guest laundry facilities with tumble dryers for excessively wet items.
