“Top notch hotel”
Reviewed January 27, 2012

Very good hotel, easily the best in Ohakune. Very friendly service across the board, from the reception, to room servicing team to the restaurant staff. Room was nice except for the trains rumbling by during the night (3 or 4?). Tracks are just outside hotel. Location is a bit too far for Tongariro Crossing. Better to stay in Whakapapa.

We spent our first night in Ohakune at the Powderhorn. The swimming pool is really a large hot tub and you have to be careful not to get water in your eyes because there is so much chlorine that one's eyes burn. The room was large and clean. You had to purchase the a card to use the Internet and the connection was poor in many locations. The breakfast was disappointing. For the price I would select another place in Okahune.

Our pool is chlorinated. This is a necessity in order to keep it clean. We are now able to offer complimentary Wifi with a restricted download limit to our rack rate paying guests.

I took a few friends visiting from the UK down to Mount Ruapehu for a snowboarding trip and as ever we were not disappointed. Simple the best place to stay in Ohakune.

Everything about this hotel was amazing! There were six of us , three rooms and every room was different , great beds and very clean with everything you need. We were there in the summer for the Tongariro Crossing but can imagine it would be buzzing in winter with all the areas you could sit around the fire places in the Powderkeg bar and restaurant. The staff were fantastic, my favourite was Sarah who I encountered working at the stationary shop in the village as well. Very good communication skills and lovely personality. Staff at reception were great as well and gave us all the info we needed and really looked after us !!

Room Tip: Room with balcony was nice to have if you only need one double bed but all rooms great.

The location and decoration of this hotel are perfectly suited to a mountain holiday summer or winter. The facilities (drying room, swimming pool, bars, restaurant) are ideal and the staff eager to please. The mountain road is right outside, and also some lovely walks by the river or on to the Old Coach Road.

Extremely helpful service from the staff at reception who helped us plan our activities during our stay. Very comfortable room with spa bath, not that we needed to use it as the hotel's main pool was delightful, especially with a beer in hand which the bar staff brought through for us.

The Powderkeg bar (part of the hotel) was good with a great atmosphere and lovely food, but slow service. Breakfast was good but again, service was unbelievably slow, which detracted from the overall experience.

We arrived in Ohakune, New Zealand for 2 nights hoping to do some snowboarding or skiing but unfortunately the weather took a bad turn so we had to spend most of our time in this wonderful hotel. We were looked after at reception by a lovely limerick lass named Louise who could not do enough for us. She saw our disappointment with the weather reports and advised us on all other local attractions. However there is not much going on during winter in Ohakune when the ski-slopes are closed. There was an indoor rock-climbing wall which passed an hour or so for the bored kids! There is a real buzz around the Powerhorn and I can see why it is the top hotel in this area.

Room Tip: We were warned at reception about noise from their disco but we didn't hear a thing only the fre...
