We were looking for somewhere to eat in Ohakune & most places were closed other than fast food outlets - and this was a Saturday night! Bearing Point was empty, but it was early - we ended up being the only customers except for another couple at the bar who were probably awaiting their friends.

Both menu & wine list were good, and prices were good for the quality of food. I had a very good spicy prawn soup to start, followed by a good salmon dish while my wife had a steak. We were pleasantly surprised by the food quality & presentation, and service was good.

We tried to go back the following day but it was closed on Sunday.

Rightly or wrongly we didn't expect exceptional cuisine, especially from an understated main street frontage, in... Ohakune! But we did. Our well-travelled local host highly recommended Bearing Point. But we were skeptical.
From the very acceptable beer and wine list, the very generous and succulent deep-fried squid starters, the mouth-watering and inviting mains, to a twist on a traditional dessert... the service and food was as good as any you would get in a top restaurant in any major NZ city. My blue vein sauce, mushrooms and eye steak were cooked to perfection, and well-presented... a delight to smell and eat. But the highlight was the backstrap lamb. This was the best lamb cut we had ever tasted... and generous. Exceptional. And to finish, a lovely-presented and very tasty Granny Smith apple cheesecake. Traditional but very interesting.
The decor is simple. and the service good and very attentive. The prices are what you would expect for top class food. We will be going back on our next visit to Ohakune, and unreservedly recommend The Bearing Point as worthy of more than a 'look'.

Tried this place because it was rated number one restaurant in Ohakune and I can see why! Staff were attentive and friendly and food was delicious. Big portion of food and not that expensive. We had the snapper and surf and turf eye fillet both cooked perfectly. Loved that they weren't stingey with the scallops! For dessert we had the mudcake and baked alaska which weren't too sweet. I would try the apple cheesecake next time though!

Everything was great, don't mess about, just eat here, we were disappointed with other restaurants in Ohakune but this place was so outstanding. Service was friendly and efficient and the food was large and sumptuous.
