“Fantastic place for kids, families and adults”
Reviewed February 2, 2013

We booked the whole place for a friend/family get-together. 4 families and 9 kids for 4 nights. The owners, Jane and Darren are very friendly and helpful and knowledgeable of activities in the area. There's a large lawn for the kids to play on and they can be easily supervised from the lodge and deck. The lounge and kitchen are well equipped and comfortable. Its a nice quiet part of Ohakune (in the summer) and a good view of the mountain. We would certainly go back again.

The appartment we stayed in was very nice. Good living area, good kitchen, good bedroom and good shower. The downsides where: only one very basic plastic chair for sitting outside, not properly working television, not working airco (magement said it was only meant for heating anywayz) and not working light switch in the shower, though the heater switch (which is a big lamp) did work. All these defect are minor issues and didn't hamper our stay, though it prevents me from giving Station Lodge a 5 star rating.

The management self was helpful and even allowed us to leave our baggage at their place so we could hike a bit without leaving the luggage in the car.

Remember: its a lodge, not a B&B, so bring stuff for your own breakfast.

Booked this accommodation following a search on Wotif.com. Not knowing the area at all but wanting somewhere to stay to do the Tongariro crossing, the pics and spa pool sold it for us. Plus the coms with the hosts was excellent.
When we arrived we were really pleased with all the facilities and it certainly felt home from home, although we don't have a spa pool, yet!
The location is perfect for a summer stay to do the walks or mountain biking or for a winter ski stay.
I would highly recommend the Station lodge and the chalets which can sleep upto 6.

Room Tip: Spend a little more and go for the chalet for the spa pool

You can't get better value for a holiday in New Zealand.

You can have a private dorm room for $55 a night or an entire unit for $110 a night.

Right nex to the railway, great facilities.

My only complaint is that with the hardwood floors it means no matter how quiet guests are you will always here them walking around which means we were often woken by travellers waking up early to go cycling.

Stayed at the Station Lodge for 2 nights. Rooms, bathroom/shower and kitchen are all clean and well looked after. There are quite a few showers/toilets, so you never have to queue up. It is quiet and you can have a decent sleep there. The train station is a 2 minute walk away and the Naked Bus also stops there. It is about a 30 minute walk to the town centre but it is a pleasant walk and you can hire bikes from the Station Lodge. The Old Coach Road trail is nearby. I would stay there again and so recommend it.

We (two couples) stayed in a chalet over Labour Weekend and cycled the Old Coach Road for the second time. This was our second time staying at Station Lodge. Darren was very helpful taking us to the Horopito end of the ride (at a very reasonable price) and along the way gave us some very good information on other rides in the area which we are already keen to do. He even managed to make sure the weather was fine on Saturday just for us.
The chalet itself was excellent, clean and well looked after, and had everything that we needed, especially the hot tub which we were very grateful to use at the end of our ride!
We heartily recommend the Station Lodge as a great place to stay, and Darren and Jane as excellent hosts.

We had a fantastic time staying at Station Lodge for 5 nights. The facilities are perfect for a large group size of school students (34 and 8 adults), clean and tidy all in a beautifully restored lodge and gave excellent value for money that I imagine would be unbeatable in Ohakune. It is very handily located near to shops, restaurants and Turoa ski field and the owners are extremely helpful and went out of the way to ensure the trip ran smoothly and to budget. The on site rental shop was an added bonus, with quality gear ready to go as soon as we arrived, again unbeatable value. We will definitely be booking again in the future, thanks for an enjoyable stay!
