“Just great”
Reviewed December 21, 2012

We had a great stay at Manuka Lodge. We really felt welcome and special. Alan and Susie are wonderful hosts. Our room was immaculate, great bathroom and shower. Breakfast was extensive and delicious. The lounge is a pleasant place to spend the evening by the fireplace. After having walked the Tongariro Crossing we were welcomed back at the lodge with a drink and a very pleasant hour with our hosts. Then the spa pool was waiting for us...what a joy.

We received a warm and friendly welcome from Susie and Alan when we arrived at Manuka Lodge. We also received local knowledge from them that was helpful in planning our stay in Ohakune and Tongariro National Park. The lodge is so well maintained that you'd think they just finished building it yesterday. It is located on a very quite street. The room we enjoyed was spacious with a comfortable bed and heaps of good teas and coffee provided; the bathroom was spacious with a great shower and the breakfasts were remarkable providing fuel for the entire day. Enjoyed breakfast watching the cattle grazing in the back paddock. We found it to be faultless, so it is the perfect place to stay.

This was a very much above average B&B, purpose-built with "high spec" fittings, including the best shower we've used in NZ. The room was very comfortable and the hosts made us feel very much at home. In the evening, they were happy to share a log fire in their living room and view view our photos with us. The cooked breakfasts were delicious and all our laundry was done for us and returned, dried and folded, with a smile.
The location was very handy, just minutes from Ohakune shops and restaurants, yet quiet and private. It was well placed for the local walks (and in the winter for skiing) and the hosts were very happy to phone up and book activities for us or recommend places to go. Highly recommended.

We have stayed at a number of places in and around Tongaririo National Park over the course of this year. Good quality, comfortable accommodation with fantastic service can be hard to find. Manuka Lodge is an exception to this. The lodge is light, airy and comfortable and Allan and Susie are incredibly friendly and hospitable. Breakfast was fantastic. Our room was generous and really well set up, as are the common areas. Allan and Susie are both really proud of the local area and what it has to offer. They provided great recommendations for places to go for dinner along with things to do and see nearby. We wish them all the best and will definitely be back.

We had a very comfortable and enjoyable stay with Susie and Alan. The lodge itself is lovely (great beds!) - and built in such a way that you can either enjoy the company of others or have your own privacy - both options work well. Susie and Alan are extremely nice people and very sensitive hosts - for us they struck just the right balance of friendly and chatty, and also allowing us our privacy. We are Kiwis and haven't done a lot of B&Bs in NZ before (partly because we wondered how comfortable we'd feel in 'other peoples space' ) but absolutely loved it at Manuka Lodge (and loved the cafe quality breakfast!)and will definitely try NZ B&Bs again after this experience.

We were looking for accommodation in Ohakune, something that was comfortable, away from the crowded ski places, somewhere that was quiet, warm, comfortable and accessible. As we had not planned on being in Ohakune that weekend, drawn there by the brilliant day and Turoa skifield, we thought that we would try to find something different to where we normally stayed, something to spoil outselves with. After spending all day on the slopes, we headed into Ohakune and Manuka Lodge. The instuctions given were easy to find, we drove up to a very impressive house, parked and were instantly welcomed by our hosts. What a lovely couple, very approachable, very nice and very welcoming. They showed us around, the huge guest lounge with a beautiful stone fireplace, the breakfast area and then to our large room which was situated downstairs just off the guest lounge. There was a beautiful ensuite bathroom, fresh white towels, tea and coffee making facilities, small fridge. They left us and we showered and changed and then made out way out to the guest lounge to have a glass of wine. We were joined by the owners and we chatted while the wood fire was lit. The lounge has a beautiful view of Mt Ruapehu looming large in the background. There were games, magazines, large screened TV to keep ourselves amused. It was very hard to detach ourselves from this environment to leave to drive into town for a meal. Our hosts made suggestions of where the best restarants were and suggested that as the town was almost fully booked, there may be a wait for a table. They did suggest a brilliant idea at the local pub, while downstairs was "heaving" with people, upstairs there was a quieter bar and restaurant. We headed there and found another fire place, large leather lounge suites and a good menu. We were served straight away and sipped our wine while waiting for our food. We retired early into the comforts of a large king bed ignoring the presence of the outdoor spa, while we were tempted the winter temperatues didn't entice us to step outdoors again. Breakfast was between 7.30 and 9.30 a.m. and was eaten in the dining adjoining the guest lounge, This was an "everything" breakfast from cerials, yoghurt, fruits through to cooked eggs, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, toasts, coffee and of course "Manuka" honey and homemade jams. We were joined by the other guests and the conversations covered everything from books, history and travelling. We would definitely stay here again and the hosts/owners made us very welcome. We were only sorry that we could stay only one night as Manuka Lodge was fully booked.

Room Tip: The rooms are all excellent. We chose a king bed but there are other choices. While we stayed in...
