Do not stay here under any circumstances.
I made a booking in late October for two rooms, for two people, myself and my husband and my cousin. The total amount I paid was AED 1,770.
When we arrived at the hotel we were told we were being upgraded to two super-deluxe rooms, 505 and 506.
However, on entering the rooms, we were disgusted by their condition.
-- There was an overpowering smell of damp coming from mould that was clearly visible all over the walls next to the beds, which were wet to touch.
-- There were open electricity sockets on these damp walls with exposed wires, and when we moved the bed, we saw weeks worth of dirt on the floor.
-- The paint work was chipped, the carpet and furniture stained, and in the bathrooms the grouting around the bath and sinks was black with mould.
After finding the rooms in such a poor state, we returned to reception to complain, noting that as we came out of the lift half the ceiling was missing and an electric light was perilously suspended in some MDF above our heads, and from which wires were hanging down.
Next to the lift, a step ladder laid down on the floor was the only barrier to a building site, where cables were also hanging, and brickwork was exposed.
We called the manager, who gave his name as Mansoor Ali. He defended the appearance of the reception and told us it was perfectly safe, refusing to acknowledge our concerns about the exposed wires.
He then offered to show us a different apartment, which had two bedrooms, instead of the two separate rooms we had booked.
This was on the fourth floor, which was clearly of a higher standard than the fifth floor. The room itself was better, but there was still an overwhelming smell of damp, and the paintwork was chipped and the carpets stained.
At this point, while we were deciding whether to take this room or not, Mr Ali became very defensive and told us it was not his fault that the rooms on the fifth floor were mouldy, and that it was because a previous guest that morning had opened the window and allowed condensation to build up.
We did not find this to be an acceptable explanation and we were disappointed that Mr Ali should wish to blame a guest, rather than accept responsibility, as manager, for the poor condition of the rooms. Moreover, we received no apology from Mr Ali about the state of rooms he had intended us to stay in.
He offered us a free breakfast (something I thought was actually included in my booking, though I was told on arrival it wasn't) but we did not feel, given the poor state of cleanliness of the rooms, that we wanted to consume any food that had been prepared on the premises.
Following much discussion - during which time we heard another staff member mutter under his breath "I would not pay to stay here either" - we decided not to stay in the hotel for the following three reasons.
1 - Health - the damp and mould in the rooms would have been detrimental to our health and tainted our clothes and luggage. We were concerned that the A/C units would be dirty and we did not want to sleep in rooms so badly ventilated.
2 - Safety - the reception area was in a perilous state and we wondered whether the building was even structurally sound, whether the lifts serviced regularly and if there were working fire alarms.
3 - Manager's attitude - his refusal to apologise and then his defensive and aggressive tone blaming other guests for the poor state of the hotel.
Mr Ali told us he was unable to authorise a refund to my credit card because we had made the booking online.
He refused to give us the name of the hotel owner and said he could not contact him.
A week later, I contacted the hotel to ask for a refund, they said this would be processed.
I was also contacted by Booking.com for an explanation about why the hotel had "cancelled" my booking in their system.
Close to two months later, I am still waiting for my refund, which I was told on more than one occasion would be "processed today".
Do not stay at this hotel under any circumstances!
