The area is mercifully free of tower blocks and mass tourism. The buildings can only be 3 storeys high and have a very unobtrusive building style

I have lived in Turkey for 16 years now, and recently went on this day trip for the 5th time...its the only one I can just keep doing over and over again...wonderful. Its a gorgeous day out in every way, with coach ride to Dalyan, then a relaxing meander down the river that was featured in the film The African Queen, to the local mudbaths, and after a fun time there, off to a riverside restaurant for a decent meal, then back on the river boat and a gentle trip down river to the Dalyan beach. Its a great day out for people or all ages...

THURSDAYS
Join the River Bums, cleaning the Dalyan waterways!
The Köycegiz-Dalyan SPA is of a stunning beauty. Its waterways fill people with delight and should be a safe haven for its rich wildlife. Unfortunately tourism is taking its toll and the waterways are getting littered. Therefore a group of volunteers goes out once a week for a cleanup. Since rubbish cleaning is not the most prestigious of activities, it requires a positive outlook on life to qualify for River Bum. If you think that you meet Bum criteria (eco-consciousness, hands-on mentality and a positive outlook on life), why don't you join the team on one of their missions?
The River Bums set out on Thursdays at 10 am and are usually back between 14:00 and 14:30. The "rubbish boat" is parked at the Kardak Tours stand on the river front, not far from Tezcan hotel. The boat immediately stands out by its conspicuous banner, saying Dalyan Kanalını Temiz Tutalım! - Keep the Dalyan Channel Clean! Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring a pair of working gloves to protect your hands!

EVERY DAY
Dalyan and its pristine İztuzu Beach are associated with turtles. Turtle tourism does come at a price, though. In order to show them to tourists, boatmen bait the turtles with crab and too many get hurt while getting entangled in fishing lines or by being hit by a boat propeller.

If you prefer a more sustainable Turtle Watch Tour, you had rather visit the DEKAMER sea turtle rehabilitation centre at the dolmuş side of the beach (which is also far more natural than the crowded estuary side). At the sea turtle centre you can watch Loggerhead and Green Turtles from a close distance. If you see the injuries of the long-term residents, you will understand why the “traditional” Turtle Watch Tours are a hazard to turtle welfare.
DEKAMER is open to visitors the year round.

Close to DEKAMER, you will find Kaptan June’s Hut.
In the tourist season it serves as an information centre and small museum about the history of İztuzu Beach and its celebrities … Caretta caretta and Kaptan June herself. There is a nice gift shop with original hand-painted keepsakes of Okçular-based artist Gülay Çolak.

WEEKDAYS
Talking about Okçular …
Gülay Çolak was also involved in painting the stunning murals on Okçular primary school. If the gate is open, the teachers and kids will be thrilled by a visit to their school yard …
