My sister and I took a day trip from Salamanca to Avila and ended up wanting to stay the night as we wanted to stay for an outdoor music concert and would have missed the last train back to Salamanca. We went to the tourist office and asked for a map of accommodations. Instead of checking out the places on the map we decided to look at the hostal right across the street. Are we ever glad we did! It was an immaculately clean hotel with very comfortable beds and breakfast included for 49€. The room was a decent size (Room 203) and it opened onto a side street. We were not thinking clearly when we went to bed and left the window open. BIG mistake! The town does not sleep until late and after it sleeps, any car driving on those cobblestone streets sounds Iike a transport truck in the middle of the night. Be sure to make use of the fan in the room and keep the windows closed at night! With the windows closed it is very quiet and you won't hear people talking nor any vehicles. The only downside is a tiny shower in a large bathroom but since we had nothing with us for an overnight stay, this was not an issue for us! Maria, the concierge, was very helpful and accommodating. The breakfast was basic with good coffee. This hostal is in an excellent location just outside the walls of Avila and across the street from the tourist information office.

This is a perfectly located spot in Avila. Just at the famous walls surrounding the old town, some 100 meters from the Cathedral. Just couldn't be better. The receptionists are polite and helpful, they consider your wishes you had expressed during the reservation and they do take care of their guests (i.e. on our departure day, they specially opened the breakfast room at 5:30 to let us have our last breakfast). In front of the hotel (or rather "hostal"), there is a restaurant that seemed quite popular and offered a wide selection of dishes.
Despite the positive impression, as described above, the hotel does have its flaws and "pleasure limits". Bearing two stars, the hotel offers the comfort of a one-star spot, rather. The room we were given was quite small, with just two beds, one cupboard and a tiny table you could place something on but not use it for eating or writing. That's all. As the rooms are not airconditioned, we had some difficulties at night (simply too hot), even though it was the mid of May, thus, I would strongly recommend to re-consider staying there for longer during really hot summer days. The bathroom was all right.
In general, the hotel seems fine for one or two nights provided you are there just for having somewhere to stay at night. It is also worth considering during the check-in on which side of the hostal you are placed. The rooms with the splendid view onto the street and the walls face also the restaurant (forget getting your sleep before midnight), the other rooms (like the one we were given) go onto some tiny, greyish yard, but at least you do not hear noices at night.
The breakfast was acceptable but hardly anything more than that. No tea(!), just coffee, juice, one sort of yoghurt, two sorts of meat and some jams. That's all, I think. Good for a short stay, only.
All in all - not a bad place, but not suitable for high end travellers.
