We stayed three days with our kids at the Topas Eco Lodge. First shock was the dam construction site. But we got over it due to the hikes, especially the one up mount Silverstone. The resort is hazzle-free in any respect as eg you can be sure that no red Thao or Black Hmong will follow you, resort is off-zone.
We loved the setting and the food and were so glad not to have drowned in Sapa town: terrible, overrun and uninspiring.

The setting here is beautiful, the grounds are clean and spotless, the food is wonderful, the butterflies are amazing, the Red Dao ladies are persistent but charming. This is a fabulous part of Vietnam, so worth seeing, especially if you appreciate people and cultures that are different from what you're used to in your day to day life. I'm picky when it comes to hotels and since screens on windows aren't the norm in Vietnam, we had to upgrade to a room with a/c because I'm not comfortable with windows open and bugs coming in and out. My husband would have been fine with it, but I'm not... We met the new manager of the hotel, he seems GREAT and we if we return to Sapa one day, we'd go back here in a flash. We also stayed for two nights in Sapa, at the Victoria because of wanting to take the Victoria train from Hanoi but we weren't ready to leave Topas but had to because of the tie in to the Victoria train... We were at Topas for two nights and the Victoria for two nights, next time we'd want to stay 3 nights at Topas and just one night at the Victoria. Topas is amazing. Reminded me of Lapa Rios in Costa Rica--and that's quite a compliment to Topas! : )

Room tip: Ask for room with a/c if you don't want windows open since windows don't have screens.

I stayed here for 3 days and had a most enjoyable time. The lodge is situated at a 45 minutes drive from SAPA; a van picked us up and drove us conveniently to this lodge. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The lodges are built in a beautiful green environment, mountains are surrounding and overlooking the valley and they have all a very nice terrace. The furniture including the beds are of a very good quality and the bathroom is spotless clean. Many hikes - walking and mountain biking - can be made in the environment, starting from the lodge. guides are available. The food is very good, a big variety at breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you want to relax and escape the busy life of Vietnam or other countries, this is a pace to visit.

Room tip: All lodges are built in green lanes with plants and flowers.

Everything was planned beautifully during my stay and rarely have I felt so taken care of. Props to the amazing effort put in by the staff to keep this place going.

My husband and I stayed just one night at the Ecolodge as part of a longer trip around Vietnam, having reached the area on the sleeper train from Hanoi. We were not supposed to check in until 1pm but we got there at 7am and we were able to get in and take a shower after our journey, which was fantastic. Similarly, when we left the next day, we were supposed to be out of our room at lunchtime, but we went on a trek which lasted the whole day and the staff were happy to let us keep our room, so that we could go back and have a shower and then pack up before leaving in the early evening. We did not pay any extra for this.

Contrary to what some people have said in previous reviews, we thought the food was very good. Yes, it is pricey, but the place is very remote with poor roadways, so getting supplies there must be tricky. Each meal has several courses and we thought it was all very good indeed. You certainly don't go hungry and the breakfast is excellent (home made banana jam - yum!!)

We spent our first day relaxing on our balcony with a book. As it was our honeymoon, we were brought a bottle of sparkling wine and some flowers, which was a lovely touch. The rooms are basic but there is nothing lacking and we had no problems with the hot water at all, both of us showering twice a day with no issues. We were lucky with the weather and it was generally sunny (although it was foggy in the early morning), which meant that the views made the stay there just magical. We took one of the trekking tours, but instead of going to the nearest village, took motorbikes to a further village and trekked in the valley with a guide. We were absolutely knackered but it was fantastic; the scenery was worth it! We were not followed by the Red Sao for this but did buy some bits from them on our return. They are harmless and all we spent was ten dollars so it did not break the bank.

We just loved the Ecolodge. It will not be everyone's cup of tea but to appreciate it fully, it needs to be experienced remembering that it is in the middle of the mountains, an hour or so from the nearest big town. It is peaceful and beautiful and that is why you go there, rather than for the five star experience.
