“Lovely stay in Sapa”
Reviewed October 17, 2013

My wife and I stayed at this resort during our 3 nights in Sapa. We found the hotel lovely, warm and charming. The staff was very kind and always helpful and would go beyond their duty to accommodate any request.
We had room 214, with a very nice balcony overlooking the mountain, a pleasure to wake-up every morning and sit there sipping my tea while waiting to go out.
We dined once at the restaurant, the food was good, but a bit pricey as one would expect. I'd recommend to indulge in the many local options you have in Sapa town, only 5 mins walk from the hotel.
The hotel has a lovely outdoor garden and the common areas are very spacious, we loved the fireplace by the entrance at reception. There is an indoor pool, which we did not try, and nice spa, which we did try and enjoyed.
Overall the perfect place to relax after the long walks we were doing every day.

Victoria Sapa is a great hotel, with charm and character, at the heart of Sapa. Its architecture and style reflect perfectly well the mountainous and ethnic atmosphere of the town and bring visitors back to the time when they were not called tourists but travelers. The staff is very attentive and friendly. Cyril, the French General Manager, and his management team are equally friendly and even more efficient. It is the kind of place where you would just like to stay for a week, strolling in town, reading by the fire place and just enjoying one of the most stunning region of Vietnam.

Arrived at Victoria Sapa Resort after train from Hanoi. Found it a very pleasant place to unwind. Vistas are beautiful and staff is accommodating. The hotel spa complex came as a pleasant surprise in this relatively isolated region.

We took the Victoria train up to and from Lao Cai, and booked a 2 berth cabin. Very thankful we did, mainly for privacy and the ability to use our bags when we wanted to etc. Toilet was immaculate throughout the trip, but don't expect to sleep much ! It is incredibly noisy and bouncy (which had me conjuring up in my mind all sorts of rail disasters throughout the night !), and the "bed" was hard as a rock (use the spare duvet for a an extra layer). We arrived in Lao Cai at 6am, feeling absolutely shattered. Its approx 1.5 hour's drive up the mountain to Sapa.

We didn't have to wait long for our room, and had breakfast while that was being sorted out. Very good breakfast spread, with Western and Asian hot choices, lovely pastries and a reasonable selection of fruit and cereals.

Our room was on the second floor (top floor), facing the inner courtyard. It has a bit of a motel feel in that the stairways and corridors are roofed, but not enclosed. Great views from the walkway to/past our room. There is a high school nearby and they play loud music very early in the morning (to get the boarders out of bed, according to our guide). Our room was fine, with a minibar, safe and tv (and they provide room service, if you want it). They provide slippers (which, like those on the train, looked used - yuk) and bathrobes. The bathroom is small and a bit tired, but not too bad. We were in Vietnam to celebrate our wedding anniversary and the staff had put rose petals on the bed. Better still, when we had dinner in the hotel restaurant (very nice) they had sets out rose petals hearts on our table. Actually, the ladies in the restaurant were delightful. A bit shy, but extremely helpful.

The hotel is up a short, steep road but not a problem for anyone moderately fit. There are also stairs nearby that take you down to one of the main streets in the small township. Most restaurants in town are within a 5-15 minute stroll from the hotel. We didn't use the "gym" (one treadmill in a corner) or the pool, but the pool might be an option when the rain comes in. There were a few tour groups at the hotel, but generally small groups of people. We stayed 4 nights, but it seems that most people only stay a couple. If I ever come back to Sapa (which I won't !), then I would happily stay here again.

Previous reviewers have mentioned the long wait until the night train. We didn't mind - there is plenty of comfortable seating around the bar and reception area and we had a leisurely lunch, read books, drank tea etc until our pick up. The guides seem to have a couple of favoured cafes near Lao Cai station and you wait there until the train departs - plenty of options for eating, and killing time.

Booked this hotel to be able to take the Victoria Train as much as anything else

First, the hotel: great service and location; good food and facilities. I suspect there might be cheaper alternatives around!

Second, the train: small bed spaces but very noisy. I accept the tracks will be old, but there was such a racket from the undercarriage on the rails, no one in our cabin got much(any) sleep.

Sapa is great and we had great weather, but would I do it again? Not 100% sure.

An excellent hotel. Very friendly staff. Rooms are very well decorated. Breakfast one of the best we had in Vietnam. Also dinner was exceptional. We love Vietnamese food and here we certainly had the best ever. An exceptional mix of Vietnamse and European influences.
In the morning a bit of noise from a speaker in the village
