“hotel is comfortable but a tourist trap!”
Reviewed August 21, 2013

Upon arrival in this 4 star hotel (in fact the only "luxury" one in Sapa), you get charged for everything you do. Although the hotel was half empty, we were told it was full but kindly offered an early check in for 50 dollars (did not make much sense). We declined, (the train to Sapa always arrives in the morning so giving everyone an early check-in would, in fact, be difficult) and were "invited" to wait for our room to be ready while enjoying breakfast (20 dollars each) or having a massage in their Spa (50 dollars each). Also, we were asked if we wanted to upgrade our room to one with a better view (10 dollars), just to find out the view was internal and not facing the mountains. The actual surcharge was for the same room we had, but one floor higher. Personally I found this hotel to be a tourist trap for people who are impressed by the hotel's 4 stars. Although the treatment you get is not close to the one of a luxury hotel, the rooms are nice and breakfast is very good.

Dear oliviathefox,

Greetings from Victoria Sapa Resort and Spa, thank you very much for staying with us. Following your review on trip advisor posted few days ago, we would like to thank you for your time sharing your point of view and experiences during the time in Victoria Sapa Resort & Spa.

Thank you for sharing your positive comments about our room and buffet breakfast. On the other hand, it is with deep regret that we have acknowledged your comments about surcharge for early check in time and extra breakfast upon arrival. For the early check in upon arrival about 6:00-7:00am in the morning, normally we charge at least 50% and we are sure you are clear already when you reserve a room though Agoda.com. We have Victoria Express Train runs six times a week from Hanoi to Laocai, for the guest who reserve Victoria packages and take Victoria Express Train we have to put on top priority of preparing the room upon arrival. About breakfast; your breakfast is included for next morning and of cause of you would like to have an extra one we offer US$20/person for a best breakfast in town.
Thank you once again for sharing your point of view with our readers; we are very sorry we were not able to please you entirely. We will share your feedback with our team and we try the best to satisfy all Victoria Sapa guest.
We look forward to welcome you back at Victoria Sapa Resort and Spa!
Very best regards,

The Management

After that long drive from Lao Cai this hotel looked so inviting. The location would be hard to beat....we could even see Mt Fansipan peak from our room.
The grounds are beautifully landscaped and the hotel is a short walk to all the main shopping and restaurants.
Rooms are large and airy with free wifi. The only concern we had was the bathroom which worked fine and was clean, but it was ready for a makeover!

The team that runs the Victoria Sapa Resort are to be commended. I have visited Sapa for over a decade and the Victoria continues to be head and shoulders above other accommodation options. Yes, it's more pricey than other hotels in Sapa, but for the service, room cleanliness and layout, train experience and food options, it is reasonable and appropriately priced. There's even a treadmill if you are a fitness fanatic stuck inside on one of Sapa's rainy days! Hugo, the French chef continues to make innovative dishes and if you can twist his arm and give him a budget on a non-busy night he might just make an incredible degustation menu for you (thanks Hugo!). Nicolas Corino is the utmost in professionalism as train manager and now front office manager; while Mr Nguyen Van Tri kindly upgraded me on the train so that I could get work done and not disturb others, on a recent trip. The young Vietnamese men and women who serve in the restaurant are professional and friendly, and excellent with children. The train is fantastic cf. all other options to Sapa (I've tried at least 5 other companies).

We stayed with our two children and apart from the bathroom with does need updating the rooms were lovely with a beautiful view over sapa town out the front and of the grounds out off the balcony. Breakfast is amazing. We were took the train from hanoi. Tge organisation at hanoi was do lacking it was destressing. Its not a nice place to be when you dont know whays going on. We were greeted at the front by victoria staff and placed inside in the heat and with kids pooping on the floor and told the guy would be back in 15 minutes. 1 hour later he was still not back. Finally we saw more people from our train sitting around and thought we would just stick with them. Finally got taken to board the train to get yelled at my dtation staff for not havibg the correct ticket. The guy ran off to get them. The train was nice and clean but very noisey. We arrived and picked up by a shuttle bus and guide organised by our tour company. Aurora in Hanoi. Our guide was a god send. Her name was Mao. She spoke fabulous English and helped with all our needs for 2 days guiding us Throught the villages and filling us in on the culture of the black h'mong. The resort was great but as I said it would want to have been for the price.

Dear Jacobi0207,

Thank you for rating our rooms and service with 5 star.
The Victoria Express train is an insurance for our guests about service quality, hygiene and cleanliness, in comparison to the local train services. However it is possible on the very busy night, to find the Hanoi train station very crowded. Our staff is here to welcome you from 8PM, and insure a smooth transfer to our train around 9.15PM, and following your comment we will find out where the confusion happened and provide more training to avoid this feeling another time. Reading your comment regarding this fantastic area that makes Sapa such a unique experience is delighting us, and we hope to welcome you again in the mystic mountains of North Vietnam.

The hotel is well situated in sapa.
The bedrooms are pleasantly appointed although the bathrooms need major updating.
Likewise the pool area has seen better days.
However my main problem with this hotel is the smoking area. All the main bar area is for smokers, so the majority of people either have to sit in smoke or be exiled in the reception lobby. But even then, when its busy people smoke and the staff do nothing about it. When I suggested that it would be nice to eat my bar meal without cigar smoke around me the staff member nodded politely and then proceeded to serve them! Major fail.

Dear UKChris82,

Thank you for your valuable feedback of your experience in our resort.
We would like to understand better your disappointment regarding our facilities and following your comment our maintenance department will conduct a deep inspection.
Our bar and chimney area are places where our guests are allowed to smoke, our restaurant and further sofa areas stay available as non smoker places, at all times.
We will keep training our staff in order to guide our guests better in this situation.
We hope to see you again in the Tonkin Alps, and enjoy a nicer time in our property.

Dear A B,

Thank you for your kind comment regarding our family studios, and the cleanliness of our property, we are paying a very special attention on the hygiene of our resort.
Our gym facilities might be not very extensive, but the main classic machines are ready to use. The most of our guests are trekking or visiting local markets, and it is a recommendable experience to enjoy and discover this stunning part of the world.
We would like to welcome you again, and to guide you through a nice trek, ending with a delicious menu from our restaurant, hoping you would get a more memorable time.

Don't get me wrong we really enjoyed our stay, but we were disappointed. The Hotel was in a great location, the room clean and comfortable (although would have loved a fan at least) and breakfast was lovely. We travelled on the Victoria Express which we loved, although it was very expensive. When you have to stay at the Hotel to use this train you expect the transport from Lao Cai to Sapa to be included. How else are you going to get there? So we were surprised when we had to pay for our own private vehicle to take us to the Hotel. When we arrived we were greeted warmly with a refreshing drink and told that we would only have to wait about an hour for our room which was great. We also booked our return transport so that there would be no confusion on our return. We really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel and decided to take advantage of their restaurant with the fabulous views. We began with a happy hour drink and followed this with dinner. Despite finding the menu a little limited we enjoyed our meal very much until it came time to settle the bill. We had been told the wrong thing and instead of paying for 2 drinks we had to pay for all four. It could have been put down to a misunderstanding and a compromise reached, but instead the Manager? was loud, confrontational and very unpleasant choosing to talk over us. Given that there was only one other group dining, it was embarrasing! Then when we went to check out our transport had not been booked and we still had to travel by private vehicle. We told them that they would have to pay the difference as it was their mistake. Finally we are now home and an extra charge was billed to our credit card two days after our departure. We are still waiting for resolution/explanation as there has been no communication from the Hotel to explain this charge. What a shame to end this way!

Dear LynnyTraveller,

Victoria Sapa Resort & Spa Team is happy to read that you enjoyed your stay with us, that you liked the room, food quality prepared by our French Chef and the Victoria Express Train ride.
The Victoria Express train offers you a safe trip from Hanoi to Lao Cai through a high level of service, cleanness and security.
We are surprised to read about your negative comments and we will work hardly to correct those points immediately as it doesn’t reflect our passion for hospitality.
Regarding the charge on your credit card 2 days after, it cannot be possible without your approval, so, we contact you through Tripadvisor in order to know more about it as we only have your “Tripadvisor pseudo”.
We do hope that you will keep in mind the positive side of your journey in the Alps of the Tonkin.

Sincerely,

The Management
