I wrote an earlier review about our trekking with dat under the sapa forum but now am able to recommend heavenly homestay which is dats family home.

It was a very welcome and cosy house with beautiful views over the surrounding countryside from the upstairs accommodation. Clean and very warm beds, friendly family, beautiful remote location, fabulous meals and surrounded by great walks.

As i indicated before in my earlier sapa post, if you want a unique trekking adventure, accommodation in a truly original and authentic homestay and out of this world meals (no exaggeration - dat is an amazing professional cook who trained in china), heavenly homestay with dat and his family is a sapa must do.

I have already reviewed Dats Heavenley Homestay in the Sapa trecking as the Heavenley Homestay was not up at the time of our stay but I had to do another for the homestay itself. We stayed with Dat in Dec 2011 for 1 night. We were lucky to have had him as our guide provided through our hotel for the 3 days we were in Sapa.He gave us lots of options as to how we wanted our stay to go in Sapa.He asked us if we would like to stay at his newly opened homestay or at the Red Dao where all the tourists stay for their homestay. We decided to stay at Heavenley Homestay and it was the best thing we could have done.On the day of the homestay he asked us whether we wanted to go the more scenic yet longer route or the same route taken by the tourists.Of course we decided on the scenic route.Just a work of caution. If you are lacking in fitness or have bad knees then maybe think twice as you are taken up and down hills, through rice fields and villages.Amazing views but a hard slog(well for me it was) but well worth every groan. The homestay was beautifully designed and very clean. The village around it not so much.Downstairs Dat lives with his wife and two kids(maybe more now).Upstairs there are 4 rooms and a living area and a balcony overlooking the village.Thin mattresses and gorgeous warm quilts which are needed in the 0 degree temperatures.Western toilets which are brand new and all soaps, shampoos and toiletries provided so you dont need to carry lots of luggage with you for the stay.We took jumpers and toothbrushes basically for the night.Food was amazing as Dat has trained as a chef.Plenty of it and of excellent quality. After we had trecked the 12kms to the Black Mong village ,Dat took us to the Red Dao where the other homestays are. There were pool tables and a bar so if that is what you are looking for then stay there. The Red Dao village was worth the visit which is 7kms from Heavenley Homestay and an easy walk.Very touristy but we enjoyed it.I couldnt recommend this place highly enough and it was the highlight of our 3 week trip to Vietnam.

Room Tip: All rooms are the same.A mattess on the floor but very comfortable

I spent 3 days trekking thru Sapa with a friend in September. Dat was our guide. A smiling, happy Dat met us at Lao Cai early on a Sunday morning, and we immediately felt that we were in good hands. He took us to Bac Ha market, then thru some Hmong villages and then on to the town of Sapa itself where we stayed a night. The following morning, we met up with Dat again to begin our trek thru the mountain region around Sapa. During our days of trekking, we stayed with Dat and his beautiful family at his Heavenly Homestay. They were wonderful hosts and went out of their way to make us feel at home. The rooms and beds were comfortable and the food was delicious and plentiful. Dat is a warm, funny and knowledgeable guide. And he speaks excellent English. In the end, it was the highlight of my Vietnam trip. By the way, the scenery is stunning and you do not need to be a seasoned hiker to get to see these sights. I think that a novice would easily manage it.

I found Dat's Heavenly Homestay through tripadvisor, attracted by the idea of getting away from the well trodden tourist path. I contacted Dat by email and his detailed responses and instructions reassured me ready for our arrival (datsapa@gmail.com).

We were met in Lao Cai from the Hanoi night train, and driven to a local hotel in Sapa for breakfast and a shower. Dat then took our main baggage back to the Homestay whilst we spend 3hours walking with his brother in law from Sapa to the Homestay, through villages, around rice fields, and certainly off the main tourist trail.

Dat's Heavenly Homestay is simple but clean and adequate - there are mosquito nets, ample warm bedding (we needed it.... In November it was very cold at night), and the western-style bathroom has hot water shower. They can cater for 7 or 9 guests overnight. Food is excellent-tasty, varied, plentiful. Dat's wife, kids and family ate with us and there was also plenty of opportunity to watch or join in with village life going on around you.

We also arranged treks during our 3 day stay which were all highlights -off into the green mountains, picnicking by river, passing farmers, children with buffaloes, pigs, cows and hardly any tourists. A chance to see real village life rather than anything put on just for foreigners. Dat and the other guides we had were interesting, spoke good English, and had plenty of local knowledge and insights.

A totally genuine and authentic experience and well worth the money.

Lovely comfortable homestay with a nice adorable family. Dat's cooking was great. He went out of his way to taylor the trip to our needs (i was recovering from a broken ankle) the trekking was so beautiful. The mattress was cozy and warm. The setting was scenic. All our guides spoke english well and were well informed about the area and the people. We loved the homestay and were so glad we did it! (we heard less than exciting things about the food/conditions of other homestays in the region)
