Description: The global award winning ethnic minority run social enterprise, promoting responsible tourism & community development. Sapa O'Chau helps you to "Come to Sapa and leave more than just footprints..." This cafe started as a place for our trekking guides to gather. Now it serves our guests before and after their treks with us. Profit goes to supporting 35 ethnic minority residential students who attend highschool in Sapa Town. This saves them travelling at least 15km to town from the village.

Located in a quiet part of town we thoroughly enjoyed our fish and chips. Friendly staff, it's certainly worth a visit.

Dear Fredbris, Thank you for reviewing our great Fish & Chips! It's people like you that are helping other travelers to find our hidden away cafe. Our local Hmong staff team are some of the most cheerfully genuine people you will find and they do their best to make a visit to Sapa a memorable one. Best regards, Peter Gilbert, Associate Director, The Sapa O'Chau Project

This friendly place serves up a pretty good English Breakfast and also Yorkshire Tea. I wish I had discovered it earlier in my stay.

My husband and I came in because of the reviews - we were not disappointed!

We had trout and chips and the servings were generous (I couldn't eat it all), the staff were great (friendly and warm) and it was located in a more quiet part of town which was fantastic to kick back and relax.

They serve the most amazing hot chocolate, I had drink envy. The fish and chips were delicious with every condiment under the sun.

If you need a break from the hustle and bustle of town life, have a seat on the balcony and watch the kids say hi as they walk past.

I loved the fact that the kids decorated the menu ...

Dear Ingridwoffy, Thank you so much for sharing your relaxing experience. As you point out, our location is in a more peaceful part of town away from the main Sapa drag - Reviews like yours are helping us to be found! I'm glad that you enjoyed the Fish & Chips. We use the locally farmed Rainbow Trout for our fillets and the locally brewed Lao Cai beer for our batter. Thanks for loving our student decorated menus. Our cafe is much more than just a business and our students are at the heart of it. Best regards, Peter Gilbert, Associate Director, The Sapa O'Chau Project

First of all, I am a fish person!
Not seafood as I don't eat other seafood stuff.

Just fish - and crabs.
But Fish and chips here is great.

Plus, it is a great place to interact with the locals
as they provide work/training for teenagers
from the village.

With every bite you know
that you are eating for a good cause --
hahahaha!

Who would have thought that's possible?
Keep up the good work, guys!

Will definitely drop by again
when I re-visit Sapa :)

Love lots,

Dear MsTonieM, Thank you for loving our fish & chips! As an Englishman living in Sapa I'm often asked what I miss about home. I usually answered "fish 'n' chips" so I got the idea to start serving it here at our cafe (along with English Breakfasts and Yorkshire Tea). For one thing it's a great meal to have after you return from a trek - but also I wanted to find an innovative use for the Sapa specialty of locally farmed rainbow trout. To make the flavor of this classic British dish even more unique to Sapa we also use the local brew Bia Lao Cai to make our beer batter.

I had a fantastic experience with Sa Pa O'Chau. First of all I had arranged to do a 2 day trek with them - Red Dao Homestay.

The organising was fantastic with great help from Peter and Dzung. They booked my train for me which was great, transport was there to pick me up off of the train. Unfortunately we had to wait an hour for the office to open but had tea and pancakes for breakfast which was fantastic. And then we set off for the trek. Our guide was called Mai and she is a lovely local woman. Fantastic English, great knowledge, very caring and made sure that everyone in our group (8 people) was happy. She made an effort to talk to us and she was very modest. Just a lovely lovely, very genuine person. Always apologising for the fact that the rice paddy fields weret green which is because of the season. dont let this pit you off though because the views are still spectacular! We arrived at the homestay which was fantastic. They were very welcoming and made us a really fantastic dinner. The second day we were trekking back towards Sa Pa. can't complain with anything about this day either. We went back to the office and had lunch which was great again - a noodle soup.

As I was trekking over Tet, a lot of places were closed and I had nowhere to stay after the trek. Luckily, Sa Pa O'Chau offered me a room at their hotel - Sa pa view. It's a little over my budget as a backpacker but it was definitely definitely worth it. The view during the day is absolutely breathtaking. The room is lovey and clean and a great shower. A quiet area and great wifi. Food was fantastic - scrambled eggs for breakfast was great and the spring rolls at dinner were very tasty. I ended up staying here for 3 nights as I enjoyed the luxury so much.

So all in all a fantastic experience. And so a big thank you to the entire Sa Pa O'Chau team but particularly Peter, Shu, Dzung and especially Mai.

Dear Curioustraveller419, Thank you for falling in love with Sapa! We love it too and that's why we do what we do. It was a pleasure to have you with us and we are glad that your experience was fantastic. Thank you for trying some of the food at the Sapa O'Chau Cafe. Your trekking guide May/Mai is a wonderful woman, dedicated to her family and her guests. Dzung also works tirelessly to organise all our tours, from trains to hotels like Sapa View. Both will love this review! Best regards from all the team, Peter Gilbert, Associate Director, The Sapa O'Chau Project
