“One of the biggest markets in the Delta area”

This is the heart of Chau Doc and it is a fascinating insight into the way people live here. You can buy anything from toiletries to live food, from hardware to flowers and so on. You name it; they sell it - and there is no hard sell as in more obvious tourist destinations (eg Ho Chi Minh City). Bargain hard though. The downside is that the preserved and salted fish section produces a pungent smell that reaches far beyond the fish section, so you might not choose to eat at the food stalls closest to the fish!

Chau Doc's market is a fantastic buzzing place with glimpses of local life and great food. Of course there is mess and there are rats, but that's the difference between a SE Asian market and an air conditioned western supermarket! I find markets are a great way to get a bit of insight into how people are living, and this one is no exception.

We didn't see any other travellers while we were at the market, and a little crowd gathered to watch me eat my noodle soup lunch. There were lots of opportunities to interact with local people - it's amazing how well you can communicate even when you only share a few words of the same language.

Tip - wear covered shoes if you want to go into the fresh fish and meat section.

Go there if you want to walk on rubbish, smell rubbish or see rats scurrying about. Otherwise avoid.

the Market in Chau Doc is one of the biggest in the delta, and for sheer range, colour and vibrancy it's hard to beat...everywhere you look there is something new to see...

This market is perhaps the best example of a real Vietnameze village market, with almost everything for sale. The one downer is that the motorcycles drive through this crowded space, endangering and annoying everyone else.
