“Super chilled out and an amazing location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 18, 2013

This place is fantastic! My girlfriend and I are still here, we have been here 3 days and never want to leave! The hotel is right on the beach with an attended lawn overlooking Canggu which is fantastic. The spa is awesome, you can get a treatment or massage in your room, in the beautiful tropical gardens or by the pool. You can spend the day surfing then get a deep sports massage when you have walked the 20 yards back to your room - it doesn't get any better than that! The staff cannot do enough to help you without being pushy or asking you too much, its a really nice atmosphere. The hotel is stunning, its based around a large Balinese hall with traditional carvings and bespoke jewellery and antiques all over. The room we had, which was by no means the most exclusive, had a semi-outside bathroom (!) its own little pol and garden and pool with fish in it (that wrapped around the semi-outside bathroom!). The room garden backs onto the tropical gardens around the hotel grounds and the hotel faces west for the incredible Indian Ocean sunset. If you are looking for a "Sandals" type resort, this is not the place, but if you want tranquility and a truly individual hotel on one of the best surf beaches around then this is the place. They are building along the beach to the north and there will soon be some larger hotels on Canggu and Echo beach but the Tugu should still be very individual. The folk on the beach are reaaly nice and the surfers are all friendly, there are waves for all standards from beginners close in and off the reef to the semi-pros way out back for the 10 foot monsters. I will be coming back to Tugu again next time we're in Bali, it is the nicest place I have ever been!

Room Tip: The second floor rooms are bigger and have a view over the tropical gardens but the ground floor roo...

We have celebrated our wedding in Tugu Bali at the beginning of October 2013, and we have to say, that it was the best decision and choice we have ever taken! We had an incredible wedding, as Tugu cooperated with our wedding planners perfectly in order to create the wedding celebration "our way", and the result was just excellent! All our almost 60 guests agreed, that it was the best wedding they have ever attended. The main reason is the special venue area at the beach and the beautiful atmosphere of the Tugu Hotel, as most of our guests lodged there.
The Service of the Tugu staff is not always the fastest, but very friendly and good. You are there to relax, and they let you relax! The breakfast is better than any buffet breakfasts of topgrade hotels. It is a la carte, but if you take the "Tugu Plus" you have almost as many choices as on a buffet, and everything is very fresh and good. The best is, you can have your breakfast at any time (even in the evening!) anywhere you want in the hotel area, so you do not need to rush to get your breakfast with thousands of other people until 10:30am in the morning, like in other hotels. And the food in Tugu (lunch, dinner) is also excellent!
The rooms are the main highlight of the Tugu Hotel! Even the standard rooms are huge an spacious, with a small private pool outside (Dedari) resp. a huge bathing area with an antique sheet metal tub in the balcony area (Rejang). The bathrooms are very beautiful, with stone bathtubs, large windows with colored glass, and when you open them, you almost stand in your garden and in small pond with fishes. The whole hotel is packed with real antique furnitures and artifacts. Besides the entrance is a dinner room, which is an old Chinese temple, which has been brought from China and rebuilt up here many years ago (Tugu Bali is one of the oldest hotels in Bali - more than 22 years). The hotel area is very green with all kinds of tropical plants. The beach close by (1 min. walk) is wild and natural with amazing waves (you only see some surfers on the waves, but the beach is relatively empty). The venue space of the Tugu at the beach has two large beds, from where you can relax and enjoy the sunset. You can even order a bed for special dinners, so the staff arrange it accordingly, really beautiful. Besides that you have sun loungers and umbrellas there. You can also arrange to have your breakfast at the beach.
Tugu really makes you feel at home. And even if all 20 rooms are booked out, you never feel, that it is "crowded", it maintains always the relaxed atmosphere. We decided to come back every year to celebrate our anniversaries here.

Room Tip: Dedari: I will not tell you, as we will definitively come back and book that room then, we do not an...

Dear Torerow,
Thank you so much for posting a lengthy review at the TripAdviser. We were privileged that you had all the trust & giving us the opportunity to organize this precious wedding in our resort. We all were excited, as this wedding was one of the biggest weddings we have had in the resort.
We also thank you for the time taken to explain every detail from the arrival until departure. I have already conveyed some of your comments to our staff, they were so happy & delighted the way you have expressed the little Tugu in your own words.
We all liked your key phrases such as “our way”, “not crowed” “Tugu plus”, we are truly honored to have served you with that special “Tugu touch”.
We were also happy to have offered our services for all your invitees & guests with that true feelings.
Thank you for mentioning all other facilities & services of the hotel. All of us we are proud of been a part of the Tugu family for those good reasons. Our service mission is simple, to be elegant, different from others and serve from the heart.
We may thank you once again for sharing your personal experience; we will be anxiously waiting for your anniversary visit next year. Please do not hesitate contact us for any assistance you may need, from this end.
Warm regards from entire Tugu Bali family.

My family and I are just back from 4 amazing days at Tugu Bali.
We have three young children so Tugo is not an obvious choice, but being an art lover myself and husband a surf lover, we decided to give it a try.
The hotel is beautiful and unique. Art and antiques are everywhere, but in a way that it feels like they are part of the hotel and its character, it doesn’t feel like a museum, just like a very special house of some very special people with extraordinary taste.
The beach is a surfing beach, so not ideal for children or non-surfers, but having said that, we loved it. It is clean and the water is crystal clear. The temperature of the water was perfect and although you can’t really swim, you can definitely get in for a dip. The upside of having waves – apart from the obvious joy of the surfers (says my husband the waves were perfect, full, long, fun, not crowded and easy to surf) – is the delicious noise of the break and the kids’ fun of being chased and chasing them. They had a great time building sand castles and jumping waves.
The hotel has its sun loungers on a beautiful stretch of grass just off the sand, so that was another playground in itself. They played soccer, ran around and were delighted with the water coming out of the grass sprinkler.
Although this is not a hotel built for children, they love kids and treat them like royalty. Staff calls them by their names, accommodates their food requests and are just lovely all the time. My two older ones (4.5y and 2.5y) felt so independent – they would ask for bread to feed the fish, they would order their own food, they would chat to everyone. They were very happy and that made me very happy in return!
The staff is second to none. They go out of their way to be helpful, but they are never intrusive. They are alert but don’t keep coming around when not needed. They stroke the perfect balance between being close and giving us space.
Now comes the food. Delicious! Extensive menu, huge really, but if you want anything else they can also do it (not that you will need!).
Breakfast is fantastic and can be served at anytime anywhere. That is such a big plus for me.
The rooms are very big, showers are large and strong, the lemongrass soap is amazing!
I tried the deep tissue massage at the spa and had a great experience.
All in all we had the most fantastic 4 days in a beautiful property full of character with amazing staff and delicious food and where nothing seemed to be an issue.
I couldn’t really dream of more!

Room Tip: If you are travelling with family they have two rooms that can be interconnecting (212 and 214). It...

Dear Ana,
Thank you for taking time off to write a lengthy review. I & my team were delighted & inspired by your wonderful comments & sentiments expressed in your review. All of us at Hotel Tugu Bali will say “big thank you" from the bottom of our hearts.
You have mentioned & described about the Spa, food, beach & the “Tugu touch “experience , most importantly of our staff, we will be grateful & truly delighted to have such wonderful comments.
Tugu is indeed famous for having one of the most beautiful, vast collection of art and antiquities in Indonesia, and besides for the amazing food, service and facilities that you had mentioned in your review, the hotel itself is a destination by its own to experience the real, authentic, rich and colorful culture of Indonesia in general and of Java in particular.
We do hope that with all the experience you had with us will bring you back to your favorite place in the near future on your next visit to Bali.
Ana, thank you once again for well written & the experience expressed in your recent visit to our resort..
With warmest and fondest thoughts of you,
Roshan Fernando.

My wife and I honeymooned in Bali and couldn't have had a better experience! Tugu itself, the staff and location were all phenomenal! The staff was extremely nice and helpful - always willing to make accommodations with the many hotel offerings or into the city on our own. We were always addressed by our names by the staff which was such a pleasant and personal touch! Tugu is very well situated right on a beautiful stretch of beach, with large cities not too far away. So much available at your finger tips to do and explore outside of the resort - of course, doing nothing in such an idyllic setting is perfect too! The rooms are spacious and very well kept. We really loved our time at Tugu and wouldn't have changed a thing.

I stayed at Hotel Tugu Bali for 5 nights while traveling through Bali, Lombok and Gili T. I must start by saying how wonderfully kind, helpful and happy the staff are. They will do anything to make your stay absolutely enjoyable, always a call you by your name and always have a smile on their faces. The hotel is in prime location on Canggu Beach near one of the best surfing spots and near a great little cafe names Old Man's. I highly recommend staying here.

We normally stay at the major chains such as Four Seasons, Banyan Tree and One and Only. Stayed at Tugu in Puri Le Mayeur - unique. Impossible to compare with anything else. A hotel stuffed full of antiques where the staff go to amazing lengths to make you feel at home and nothing is too much trouble. Yes the beach isn't the best, volcanic sand surfing beach but this is about the hotel. Little cobbled pathways everywhere, with koi ponds everywhere you look. The dining experiences are memorable and a must do - The Babah Peranakan in the 300-year-old Kang Xi temple and especially the The Rajah Tugudom dining in the Bale Puputan. The food generally is fantastic. It's a very different place to stay - the old Bali and a million miles from the modern generic resorts. Go try it for a few days as somewhere different.
