“Traditional Bali”
Reviewed May 3, 2012

There is a reason this hotel is usually on a top hotels of Indonesia list. It is traditional, beautiful and unique like Bali. We wanted to wind down and relax for a few days after diving in Amed and the Gilis and fighting the crowds and crazy traffic in Ubud. Tugu Bali is like an oasis and was just what we wanted. It is located on Canggu Beach , a bit away from the happenings and that is what makes it charming. There is not much to do around it but enjoy the hotel and its facilities of décor, service, food, spa, and beach. They will happily book a driver for a few hours or for the day for you to take you anywhere you like at a reasonable cost. Driving yourself in Bali would require life long therapy afterwards. We got a driver only once during our stay to take us to see the Tanah Lot at sunset followed by a traditional outdoor show right near it and it was lovely. The hotel - I would describe it as a museum boutique (small in capacity) hotel with wonderful service and restaurants or dinner choices that truly offer a one of a kind experience. We had a large Rejang suite which is on the second floor and had a comfortable king plus four poster bed and a view of the waves and beach. It had a huge sunken copper tub on the outside surrounding veranda, but we choose to use the shower room (yes it was its own room) most the time since the veranda was basically out doors (although enclosed and private) but had no air conditioning and at night had a rogue mosquito or two despite the coils the staff lit throughout the outside veranda. The photos on the hotel website and others by tripadvisor travelers offer a true representation of the hotel and the rooms it offers. It has several large public rooms off its lobby each individually theme decorated with beautiful antiques and most had a huge dining table. This was my favorite part. You could dine anywhere you choose for dinner if it was available. One night we had a candlelight dinner alone at the lily pond. The next night we sat alone (like royalty) at a long table that could have easily sat 30 and had a traditional feast (duck they cooked all day) served to us in the dimly lit Chinese red room by staff in traditional garb with local music playing. On the way back to our room, we spotted a couple who apparently choose to dine at a candlelit table set up for them on the beach. All very romantic! Aside from the dreamy movie type settings available for dinner – the menu choices and food is extraordinary. The menu is many pages long and also offers multi course theme dinners. Whatever you order for breakfast, will always be served with fresh baked goods and fresh tasty local fruit, but it was always too much food for me.

Variety in settings is also offered in the spa services in that you can choose a location for a massage. It could be your room, discreet outdoor area or in designated spa rooms. We enjoyed a relaxing couples massage in the outdoor area.

The beach in front of the hotel is lovely but the waves and water are very rough and seem to be only for the very experienced local surfers. With just a few other hotel guests there, we sunned and walked on the beach, watched the surfers, ordered drinks, read, and watched and was amused by the occasional brave person who would try to conquer the waves.

I loved this place. To me it offered uniqueness – it was traditional, elegant, romantic, quiet and away from it all. So if you want crowds, lucite furniture, pulsating music and the service staff wearing black leather and earpieces, this may not be your place. But you can walk along the beach (there will be dirty areas) to the W or similar such western hotels from here though in 30 minutes to get a fix and do some shopping. Tugu is all about traditional Bali.

Bali is a magnificent beautiful country with the friendliest most sincerely accommodating people you will ever encounter and the Hotel Tugu Bali certainly has its lions’ share of charming people within their very professional staff. They couldn’t do enough to make you happy. It was a lovely few days at the Hotel Tugu Bali and a perfect end and memory to a wonderful trip. I would go back in a minute.

My husband and I got married at Hotel Tugu in April this year, planning everything via email with their incredible staff. We had a beautiful day, the hotel organised everything for us, the setting is so stunning, legal ceremony, flowers and delicious food. Such a special place.

Room Tip: Depending on what you want, I love the down stairs rooms with fish ponds and private pools

The Tugu is quite unique, which makes for an interesting stay in a different atmosphere from most other properties in the area. Small and intimate but very private. The rooms recreate an old-style Indonesian feel with a few quirky touches, such as a sunken tin bath, enclosed veranda and the shower/washroom. Although things are made to look antique, everything worked very well.
Beautiful garden setting and pool. Canggu beach is just in front, and lovely for a stroll or to watch the surfers. It is quieter than Seminyak and Legian to the south.
The breakfast was impressive. Be hungry.
Seminyak and its excellent restaurants are not far away, maybe 20-30 minutes by taxi depending on traffic. There are also some other eating options near the hotel in Canggu to the north (Echo beach).
We had just one night here at the end of a trip around Bali, but would happily come back.

Hotel Tugo is not only gorgeous, with its traditional architecture and amazing art objects, but it's also one of the best places to have a relaxing massage followed by a perfect balinese meal.

Amazing place!

The staff were helpful with everything, even little requests that we made that were completely outside the remit of what hotel staff should do. The most original beautiful decor and huge range of food and drink (the fruit juices are a bit watery). We stayed there at the beginning and end of our honeymoon and having seen it compared to other top hotels in Bali I can easily say it blew them away - I want to go back right now! Only catch was the reservation service, which didn't confirm that I was booked in right up to the last moment so I had to chase them, but who cares - BEST HOTEL IN THE WORLD!

My husband and I spent couple of days at Hotel Tugu Bali. We fell in love with the property from the moment we walked in. The antiques all over the hotel and in the guestroom make this boutique hotel very unique and special. You really feel you are in Bali. The staff is very friendly, accommodating and professional. We took a cooking class with a Balinese lady. We first went to the market in the morning and then came back to the hotel and cooked a sumptuous Balinese feast. It was the best ever! I highly recommend this place if you are looking for something special and want to experience the true Balinese hospitality!
